This site provides information on running & maintaining the fantastic little motorbike known as the Across. Some information here represents what I have discovered since buying my bike in early 2002, and some comes from the Suzuki Across discussion forums. Thank you to the owners and moderators of those forums and all of the forum contributors for the useful information that they share.

The few sites that I have discovered on the Across are listed below in the links section.
Please email me with any others that you would like posted.
Also, any tips/info you might send are appreciated & the source will be acknowledged.

About the Across...

The across is not a large engine capacity motorcycle, but at 163 kg dry and 45 horses, the across is not a slow 4 stroke 250 either. The engine has to be given credit as it is a twin cam, 16 valve, inline 4 cylinder, water cooled 250 that revs to 16 - 16.5 thousand revs/minute. The Across feels very comfortable with high revs, and "cruises" nicely at around 10,000 grand. Amongst its pros, it handles sweetly and has great brakes, even though it is only a single disc front end. The restrained power and manner of power delivery adds up to much more fun for riding in city situations (i.e., it is not anywhere as frustrating to ride as faster bikes) and it poses a lesser threat to either your licence or life than any high powered bike.

Nevertheless, the Across has enough power to keep you out of trouble, and it is faster than most cars on the road at legal speeds. A recent post on the ezboard across forum stated that the rider obtained 13.7 secs @ 154 km/hr to the standing 400 metres, and I am pretty sure that the bike is capable of sub 6 second 0-100 km/hr times. Not many cars can do this.   (...If anyone can give me more exact data to post here, I would appreciate it.)

The Across is a large bike in appearance, and many people that are not familiar or up-to-date with the current "japanese motorbike world" tend to judge it to be larger than it actually is. It is an immensely practical and sensible city commuter bike; hence one of Suzuki's names given to the bike, "Urban Sports". The size of the bike is of course a positive safety factor in urban traffic situations. Recommended modifications of the exhaust and fitting of air horns (as described in the maintenance section) can make the bike even more safe.

A unique feature of the Across which quickly becomes invaluable is the large glove box where the fuel tank is usually located. Few bikes offer such storage versatility without the use of ugly panniers or racks. 12 litres of fuel is then hidden under the seat for a range of 200-240 kms, and the fuel tank cap is accessed from the rear of the bike, behind the seat.

Overall, these features make the Across an exceptional motor cycle, for either the learner or the (sensible) fully licenced rider. In these days where insanity prevails in the need for motorcycle speed and power, the across is a refreshingly sane and practical alternative.
