Tilt Steering Slippage

Tilt Steering Slippage [850][96]... posted by rollo  on Monday, 26 March 2001, at 9:05 p.m.

The steering wheel adjuster on my 850GLT slips and allows the wheel to slowly return to the lower
position. I was reading here that someone had a fix for this, but they didn't say how or what. Any clues?

'96 850 GLT 84K miles, original A/C evaporator tested down to 39 degrees F last week. Ready for
                      summer!

The locking mechanism loosens over time and needs to be tightened. On the pass side of the column just
opposite the tilt lever, is a 10mm bolt head. It can be seen without removing the covers. You need to
tighten the screw a little at a time till the column locks securely, but not so tight that it puts undue stress
                      on the plastic locking handle.
