Help! Rotten egg exhaust![850][1995] Liz -- Thursday, 5 April 2001, at 7:42 p.m.
Here's the story....
About 2 weeks ago, my engine cooling warning light came on. I
looked under the hood, and my coolant resevoir was almost empty. I noticed
that the cap
was completely cracked so I replaced it and refilled the resevoir
w/ fluid. The Volvo dealer said it was the obvious cause of the coolant
loss and it should be
fine. The engine never overheated...I noticed the temperature
gauge remained normal. The light never came back on over the past two weeks.
Today,
however, I was driving home and the check engine light came on.
All gauges looked fine, but I noticed an awful rotten egg smell coming
from the exhaust (so
did everyone outside!). When I got home, it stunk the whole garage
up. The check engine light stayed on. I let it sit for about an hour and
restarted
it....same thing.
Is this a cooling problem still?
Should it not be driven at this point?
Any other ideas?
If you can diagnosis the problem, is this an expensive repair??
(which ones aren't....:) )
Your help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks....

P.S.
It is a Turbo.
Rotten egg smell is usually a telltale sign of a catalytic converter
going bad. And if that is the case that can also explain why the "check
engine" light went
off... Definitely have the cat checked out.

Thanks for your reply Yannis.
The check engine light DID NOT go off though...still on. Could
this be something different?

I am sorry Liz, I meant that it was "ON"...A bad catalytic converter would most likely light up the "check engine" light...

Try a different brand of gas, as some have a higher sulfer content
than others.

Probably one of your Oxygen sensors is bad or just fouled. I had
to replace the one in my '94 850T last year. 850's have 2 oxygen sensors
and I believe the
one in the front is the one that typically needs to be replaced.
My friend has a '96 850 GLT wagon that is in a similar situation. Rotten
egg smell and engine
check light is on. Dealer reported that the engine code indicated
a bad O2 sensor.
I did the work myself and O2 sensor was around $160 from Swedish
Engineering. With dealer mark-up and labor you can expect to dish out several
hundred dollars.
Alternatively, you could try using a powerful fuel system cleaner
like Valvoline Synthetic engine treatment or a large bottle of Chevron
Techron. It might even
fix your O2 sensor problem. Anyways, for $10 it's worth a shot.
-Good luck
