Care tips for black trim[850][1995]   Robert Firestone -- Wednesday, 18 April 2001, at 9:25 p.m.

Anybody have any care tips / products that are usefull for the black trim on 850's(like on the non-painted part of the bumpers). Mine is starting to fade
 (looks a little whitish). Thanks

I just purchased and applied "Forever Black" two coats and I am very happy with the results. The following is from the ipd website--

Here's the quick and permanent fix for faded, dull, lifeless exterior trim. Forever Black permanently dyes all black plastic bumpers, wheel well moldings,
mud guards, and trim with the chemicals the manufacturers use.

I know it is going to sound crazy, but the best product I have found for the trim on my 95 850 is Marvel Mystery oil. It is not meant to be used for this
purpose, but it definitely makes the trim look good.

I recently bought a '94 850 turbowagon, and it had the dull-and-whitish problem on the plastic trim band, the tailgate trim and various other exterior
plastic, including the big piece that has the vent inlets in the hood.

I used Mother's "Back to Black" plastic restorer ("Back to Black" does sound better than "Back to Black, Gray, and other assorted colors"), and it
removed the oxidation (that's the white stuff) and brought the trim back to its original color (as found under the edge of the tailgate where there's less
 weathering).

Follow the directions, use all-cotton towels (run them through the washer and dryer first to reduce lint), put in a little elbow grease (wagons have lots of
trim...) and I think you'll be happy with the results.

It costs about five bucks a bottle, and I highly recommend it as a first try, as opposed to putting on Marvel Mystery Oil (an engine oil designed to quiet
valve lifters in big old low-tech engines that had them) on the trim or using a product that will dye the plastic (which should be a last resort, because color
 matching is a pain...).

 Hope this helps...
