1. James1 Mullins was born Abt. 1780 in
England?, and died Bef. 1837 in Hawkins Co., TN. He married Clara
Martin Abt. 1805. She was born Abt. 1780 in VA, and died Aft.
1860.
Notes for James Mullins:
James MULLINS, also known as "Irish Jim", or
"Harelip Jim", was the progenitor of the Newman's Ridge Mullins clan.
He was supposedly born in England, ca.1780, though there are some who
believe that he was born in NC, and is part of the other Mullins
families in the VA, NC, TN, and KY area in the late 1700's. It is not
certain how Irish Jim's family fit in with the other Mullins families,
but some appear to be associated with Melungeon groups, which,
seemingly, would make them related somehow. But, as far as I know, no
link has been found between Jim and other Mullins', such as Hiram
Mullins, Booker Mullins, and Flower
Mullins.
Tradition states that Jim migrated to
America in the last years of the 18th century, became a trader,
and migrated to Lee Co., VA/ Hancock Co., TN, ca. 1805,
where he bought land on Newman's Ridge (at that time, Hancock Co was
part of Hawkins Co) and Blackwater Creek. In the Hancock Co. census of
1880, his surviving children listed their father as being born in Eng.
As far as I know, that is the only documentation that states this.
According to the Grohse Files, Jim had a
'hair-lip' and "couldn't hardly smoke a pipe" (quotations unknown). He
supposedly married a Melungeon woman, named Clara MARTIN (some
researchers think she was a COLLINS, or GIBSON). It is not certain
whether they were married before he came to TN, or after. I havent
found any documentation on Clara's last name, but this is a strong
local tradition. James apparently died before 1836-37. He bought land
on Newmans Ridge after 1830, but was listed as "dec'd" on a court
record involving a land deed of his son, Samuel in 1837.
Jim may have been the son of the Isaac Mullens that lived and bought
property adjacent to William Martin in the Powells Valley area of Lee
Co., VA;

*Note that Isaac bought land bordering William Martin's property. Irish
Jim married a Martin (according to tradition), which could be a clue to
their relationships with these Mullins/Martin families. Perhaps
William Martin was related to Clara (possibly her father?). That could
explain Jim being married to a Martin. Not much to go on, but a
possibility...

James (listed as Mullens) was
listed as head of household for 7 'free persons of color' in the 1830
Hawkins Co., TN Census (was Jim counted as "fpc" himself?). It's
unlikely that it was his son James' household since his son would have
been only 15 in 1830.

In an article for "The Arena" magazine in the
1890's, Will Allen Dromgoole, a female poet, wrote of the Melungeons
after staying with a family on Newmans Ridge. In this particular
article, "The Four Branches of the Melungeon Tree", she describes Irish
Jim and the Mullins clan;
"The English branch began with the MULLINS tribe, a
very powerful tribe, next indeed for a long time to the Collins tribe,
and at present the strongest of all the several branches, as well as
the most daring and obstinate. Old Jim Mullins, the father of the
branch, was an Englishman, a trader,it is supposed, with Indians. He
was of a roving, daring disposition, and rather fond of the free
abandon which characterized the Indian. He was much given to sports,
and was always 'cheek to fowl' with the Cherokees and other Indian
tribes he like to miggle .What brought him to Newman’s Ridge must have
been , as it is said, his love for freedom and sport, and that careless
existence known only to the Indians. He stumbled upon the Ridge
settlement, fell in with the Ridgemanites, and never left them. He took
for a wife one of their women, a descendant of old Sol Collins, and
reared a family known as the MULLINS tribe. This is said to be the
first white blood that mingled with the blood of the dusky Ridgemanites.
By marriage I mean to say (in their own language)
they 'took up together' having no set form of marriage service.So old
Jim Mullins took up with a melungeon woman Collins, by whom he had a
large family of children.Sometime after he exchanged wives with one
Wyatt Collins, and proceeded to cultivate a second family. Wyatt
Collins also had a large
family by his first wife, and equally fortunate with the one whom he
traded
her for.
After the forming of Hancock Co.(Tenn) old Mullins
and Collins were forced to marry their wives according to the law of
the land,but all had children and grandchildren were grown before
they were lawfully wed.
The Mullins tribe became
exceedingly strong, and remains today the head of the Ridge people."
Dromgoole's account was
very unpopular in Hancock Co, and it's safe to say that her accounts
were embelished with fiction and not to be too trusted upon.
Rev. Arthur H. Taylor said this in 1927; "All the
Mullins I know show the dark skin of Indian blood, but the older people
tell me the older Mullins' were fair of skin, which might well be
expected of originally pure Irish stock".

and Sookey ?. She was born in Hancock Co, TN. He married
(3) Mary Gibson Aft. 1861 in Hancock Co, TN, daughter of Joseph Gibson
and Sookey ?. She was born Bef. 1829 in VA.
Notes for Samuel Mullins:
In the 1830 Hawkins Co census, the household of
Samuel MULLINS was listed as having 2 'fpc' (free persons of color). If
Morning Gibson was the same person as Gevina Gibson who married a
Samuel Mullns in Hawkins Co in 1843, then it would indicate that Samuel
was married before he married Morning. This may be the second person
who was enumerated in Samuel's household in 1830. (Is this the
connection to Hezekiah Mullins, b. ca 1830?) Sam and Morning had
one child, who died. After Morning died, Sam married her sister, Mary
GIBSON, who was widow of Dotson GIBSON, who himself was killed by
Confederate raiders during the Civil War. Morning and her sister,
both born in VA, are buried in neighboring burial plots, with Sam
beside them, atop Newman's Ridge.Sam was listed as a cooper on the 1850
and 1860 Hancock censuses, and a farmer on the 1870 Hancock census.

Notes for George Miser:
George came from a German family that came to America in
the early 1800's, from around Zweibrucken, (I believe Bavaria). The
Misers lived in PA, immigrated to Wayne Co, IN, then to TN, where he
bought land in Knoxville, TN. Later he bought land on Newman's Ridge in
Hancock Co., TN, where they (this branch of Misers) assimilated
into the Melungeon families. After Prude died, George married Pheobe
Lawson. From an unknown source; Miser means "bird seller".

Jimmy may have been in the Civil War (see notes on his son
Wayman). If the information on Jimmy is right, then Jimmy was fathering
children on up into his 60's! In his younger days, Jimmy
"distilled liquor".

Notes for Wayman Mullins:
According to the Will Grohse Papers, Wayman was in the
Civil War with his father, Old Jimmy. While home on furlough, they were
hiding out for fear of bushwhackers from VA. But one night, while
camping on the ground, covered with brush, on Newman's Ridge, east of
Boyd's Gap, they were surrounded by VA raiders. They started shooting
their way out. Wayman was killed, but Jimmy escaped. Two of the 15
raiders were shot and died the next day. One of the raiders was Old
Dave MARTIN, who lived in Lee Co., VA. After Lee's surrender, the
Tennesseeans made a raid back into VA. They came upon Old Dave, sitting
grinding cane. One of the TN raiders, allegedly Duncan COLLINS, shot
him. Grohse says that Wayman was the leader of the TN raiders
before he was killed. Most of these raiders were not soldiers. The
raiding continued long after the war ended.

Notes for John Mullins:
John's family was well-known in the moonshining
business. They lived on Newman's Ridge above Vardy, in Hancock
Co., TN. They had a house that was burnt down by Confederate raiders,
ca.1863, who came looking for 2 of their sons, probably Larkin and Jim,
and 1 son-in-law, Howard Collins, Union soldiers that were home on
leave. The story goes as follows:
Howard Collins' wife, Jane Mullins, saw
the bushwackers coming up the Ridge, and screamed to her husband, who
picked up his gun and took a shot at them. They fell back a little to
size up the situation. Meanwhile, the Mullins boys escaped over a low
bluff. The raiders came to the bluff, but didn't get to get a shot off.
Howard Collins sprained or broke a finger while escaping, but they got
a shot off at the raiders, and got safely away.The sons escaped, but
the house was burned, along with most of their possesions. They let the
family take their burning bed clothes, but fire broke out in them
again. A light blanket of snow was on the ground, and the children were
barefooted. Old John was so mad, he loaded up a muzzle with about all
it could hold. Then, as the raiders were leaving through the Blackwater
Valley below them, he fired at them from the bluff. But, in his anger,
he left the ramrod in the gun, and loaded it so heavily, it burst at
the end of the muzzle. The ramrod, however, flew all the way accross
the valley, and stuck in a rail fence, near where the Becky Hurley
house was, a short distance west of Vardy Church.
I've read somewhere (unfortunately, I cannot
find these notes) that John Mullins was something of a 'Johnny
Appleseed', and planted many apple trees in the areas surrounding the
Cumberland Gap (VA, TN, KY, poss. NC), but I don't know how true that
is, as I've only read that once.
According to Jim Callahan's book "Lest We Forget -
The Melungeon Colony of Newman's Ridge", John was skilled with a
knife, and once said "I'm so tough I been knifed, shot, and the Lord
hit me with a thunderbolt so hard he knocked my shoes off and I'm still
here". (referenced from the papers of Rev. Arthur Taylor). This
incident seems to be confirmed by the following news article posted on

A Man buried by Lightening But Not Killed
The Jonesboro (East Tennessee) Flag is responsible for the following
extraordinary
statement; Mr. John Mullens who resides on Newman's Ridge, in Hancock
County, Tenn., while engaged in working in his field with his sons,
there came up, suddenly, a violent thunder storm--so
suddenly that a portion of those working in the field had not time to
reach a shelter from
the storm. Mr. Mullens, being some distance from the others, was struck
by a lightening
bolt, and literally driven into the soft earth of the field. His sons,
not far distant,
seeing him covered with dirt. They dragged him forth, and one
exclaimed, "Oh! he is dead!"
Immediately the old gentleman, who was a man of large frame and
powerful constitution,
raised himself, shook the dirt from his locks and replied to his son,
"No, I'm not dead!"
He was carried to his residence, and the proper medical aid rendered,
and he soon recovered
from the severe shock, a remarkable monument of escape from instant
death. His clothing was
rent into shreds and swept from the entire body, while his shoes was
literally torn to
fragments. Two or three red streaks on his body were all the signs that
were visible of the
terrible element that prostrated him. He was, of course, knocked
senseless, and so remained
until his sons released him from his untimely grave.
Notice the story described John as " a man of large frame
and powerful constitution". One myth about John Mullins is that he was
small and skinny, possibly because of fictional literature based on his
wife Mahala, who was famous for her large size
Notes for Mahala Collins:
Mahala is probably the most famous Melungeon individual.
She was extremely obese, as a result of Elephantiasis, and was
considered the best bootlegger in the Appalachians, though it is said
that family members actually made the liquor (apple and peach brandy
were their specialties), and she only sold it. One humorous event, that
was actually documented, was when a judge sent a sheriff up the Ridge
to arrest 'Haley'. Well, he could arrest her, but, because of her size,
there was no way they could get her down the treacherous ridge. After
giving up, the sheriff went back to the judge. When the judge asked him
where she was, the sheriff replied, "She's catchable, but not
fetchable".
Mahala has become something of a folk
heroine in the Southern Appalachians. Many stories and tales have been
made up about her, many of them far-fetched and untrue. The following

There's a big crooked mountain in East Tennessee.
They call it Neuman's Ridge.
Aunt Haley lies buried in her big pine box.
Each day there's more of that ridge.

Sometimes it's hard to distinguish truth from fiction. When Haley
died, it is said that they had to build a coffin around her bed (or out
of her bed), and take her out of a space in the wall, where they were
about to build a chimney. I've heard that this was untrue, but I'm not
sure. She's buried in a family plot near their cabin, which, until
recently (2000), stood up on Newman's Ridge. It was moved off of
the Ridge, down to the Vardy Valley, where it was renovated.

Notes for Millie Mullins:
Described by the Will Grohse Files as "Queer - never married".
The 1860 Hancock Co Census listed her as being "fitified". A photo of a
grave stone widely circulated as being Mahala Mullins' headstone is
actually the stone for "Millea". This is confirmed by the date of death
listed on the stone. Millie died a decade before Mahala.

This is not proven, but I believe Hez was most likely the son of Samuel
Mullins. Hez was obviously associated with the Mullinses of Newmans
Ridge (Hez was labeled "Mulatto" in the 1870 Hancock Co., TN Census,
and he lived near the other Mullinses at times), and Samuel would
have been the only Mullins son old enough to be Hez's father. Hez
lived in Lee Co., VA in 1860. Hez joined the US Infantry during the
Civil War (Co J 1st US Inf), enlisting on 28 may 1864 and discharged on
2o Jun 1865. His widow was listed on the 1890 Veterans Census, wh\ch is
where the information of his approximate death date came from.

Confederate Army..."
"Wilson Miser had extensive land holdings on Blackwater
(Vardy) Creek, some of which extended into Virginia. He would pay his
work hands 'in the store' by sending his red hat with one of the
workers. The merchants knew 'Wilse' would only let his hat go for that
purpose."
"He did not draw a Union Veterans Pension because
his brother-in-law Howard Collins would not vouch for him. They both
served in the same company and regiment.

Baty was in the Civil War (Co. E., 8th Tenn. Cav.?), from
Sep 23, 1863 to Sep 11, 1865. Will Grohse wrote this of Baty;
"Like most people of the olden day, he was a moonshiner in his younger
days, but as he grew older, he mellowed and was a Ruling Elder of the
Vardy Presbyterian Church in his later years. He was of medium height,
inclined to be fat, swarthy complexion..., and bald". Baty was shot by
Jeff Livesay on Blackwater Creek in late 1891, but was not seriously
wounded. In the ca 1897 Home Mission Monthly article "A Visit to the
Melungeons" by C.H. Humble, Baty was identified as a "chief" of the
Melungeons, and he apparently ran Vardy's old spa and inn.

In the Will Grohse Papers, Cynthia was described as
"tall, thin, lighter complexioned, forgetful, easily persuaded by her
grandchildren, at 83 would walk from her daughter Frankie's home down
to another daughter, Nancy's home, about 1 and a half each way. She
would leave in the morning and come back home that night; also took a
horse-back trip to visit her grandson Brownlow Collins, over on
Powell's Mt. She didn't want her girls to marry whom they did, and all
three ran off to get married. Lived on Blackwater next to Vardy
Presbyterian Church. The old house had chimneys on both ends. It was
well built". Cynthia used to make shirts for her grandfather, Ben
Bunch, and taking food to her grandmother, Mary, after Ben's death,
acording to Will Grohse.
If the census was accurate, she may not be Simeon's
birth daughter, as she would have been born after his death.

Floyd shot a Rev. Clark according to the
Morristown Gazette. Not sure whether he killed him or not. Floyd
himself was shot by Andy Rhea with a Navy 6-shooter in May 1877. He
died July 21, 1879 from the wound. In the 1880 Mortality Schedule for
Hancock Co., TN, it appears that Floyd's racial designation was written
over from "W" (white) to "B" (black). On another page, recorded by a
different enumerator, a Floyd Collins was listed as white.

Notes for Wilson Mullins:
Wilson married Vina (Melvina) JOHNSON, his
step-sister on 25 Oct 1873 in KY. Viana's mother was Lydia BIRD
(JOHNSON), who married Zerah Mullins, after seperating from her 1st
husband, James Johnson. But married life was not for Wilson, and he was
said to have treated her mean. They split, and Wilson was said to have
moved to Rogersville in neighboring Hawkins Co, TN. He remarried, and
had another family. They were said to have been moving to Texas after
1910 when Wilson got sick somewhere in Arkansas, and died. The Will
Grohse Papers say that he was believed to have moved to Memphis.
Perhaps he died near Memphis. His family had to sell their possessions
to make it back to Hawkins Co.
Notes for Melvina Johnson:
Vina married her step-brother, Wilson Mullins, the son of
her mother's 2nd husband. But Wilson was supposedly unkind to her, so
they split. After Viney left Wilson, she was said to have walked over
two mountains holding her baby son, Landon, to get back home. Vina then
married Alfred Goins, an older Civil War vet whom she had known since
she was a young girl, and raised a family. After Alfred died, Vina drew
from his war pension. Alfred and Vina supposedly owned much of the land
where Goins Chapel and cemetary now stand. Vina lived to a very good
age, on the Panther Creek side of Newmans Ridge.

In the Will Grohse Papers, Howard was described as
"a forceful, strong, character, tho obstinate; influential, fairly well
to do.Pvt. Co. E, 2nd TN Cav (Inf?). The Special Census of Civil War
Vaterans stated that he suffered from chronic diarrhea". Howard
would not vouch for his brother-in-law, Wilson Miser's, service in the
Civil War, thus depriving Wilson of getting a pension. He was known as
"Big Howard".
Another description from the WGP; " 6 ft 1 in tall, dark,
black eyes and hair, farmer. A forceful character, strong, determined,
fleshy. Sentenced to hang for a killing at his watermill. Later
pardoned. Was operator of watermill on Blackwater Creek."
"All the Howard Collins children show marked strains of
Indian in them."

Larkin and "Aunt Toney" lived on the upper part of
Blackwater Valley, near Mulberry Gap Road, in Hancock Co, TN. Larkin
was a Union soldier during the Civil War (Pvt. Co. I, 8th TN Cav).
Larkin was supposedly named Samuel, but they called him Larkin to
distinguish him from the other Samuel Mullins.
Apparently, Larkin was a deputy sheriff at one time, as an old
newpwper article deaiiled a shooting incident that involved Larkin and
his son Andrew;

Nashville, Tenn., May 5--- A special from Bristol, Tenn., tells of a
double shooting in the mountains of that region resulting in
the immediate death of one man and the mortal wounding of another. The
tragedy occurred at the distillery of Washington
Lindsay, which is on or very near the Virginia and Tennessee line.
Deputy Sheriff Mullens, of Hancock county, Tenn., went to
the distillery to arrest a man named Roy for a small offense. Mullens
was accompanied by his son, a lad of 15 years old. A row
ensued over the attempted arrest when Lindsay, the distiller, shot
Mullens through the body. The boy, seeing his father fall,
drew a pistol and shot Lindsay, killing him instantly.
The newspaper mistook Wash Livesay's name for Lindsay.

shout and sing when at church or at meetings at home. After "Aunt
Toney's" 1st husband, Shep Gibson, died in the Civil Warm she married

Eli Mullens, who had been in the moonshine whiskey business in Hancock
County, and who last January received a year sentence to the Albany
penetentiary, has just been pardoned by Pres. Cleveland on the grounds
that he has ten children, and tht his wife had sold a pint of brandy.
I had previously listed Elbert as being married to
Nancy Gibson and having children with her, but I've since learned that
it was a different Elbe Mullins and this Elbe was married to Eliza
since before 1880. Thanks to Denese Cook and Thomas Fox for pointing
out the mistake. This was confirmed by the article about Elbe and
Eliza's son, Johnny, killing Eliza's brother, George. The article
mentioned that John was a grandson of John and Mahala Mullins, proving
that this Elbe was John and Mahala's son, not the other Elbe who was
his first cousin.

Tragedy in Hancock.
Ten miles west of Sneedville at McNeil Foley's store, John
Mullins shot and instantly killed George Seal, his uncle, while Seal
was begging him not to shoot. Mullins used a 16-gauge shotgun and
emptied the contents into Seal's stomach. Seal cried "You have killed
me," and he then expired. Seal was one of Hancock county's good farmers
and owned a river farm. He leaves a wife and a large family of
children. Mullins was places in jail. He is a grandson of John and
Mahala Mullins, the large woman of Hancock county. The shooting occured
on Dec. 24.

Notes for Calvin Mullins:
According to Jim Callahan's book, "Lest We Forget - The
Melungeon Settlement on Newmans Ridge", Calvin, during a night of
drinking at the home of his mother, accused his nephew, Willie
Davidson, of having an affair with his wife, "Coose". He chased Willie,
who limped because he was lame in one leg, out of the back door with a
shotgun, struck Willie in the head with the butt of the gun, which
caused Willie's eye to pop out of it's socket, and jumped on him and
started strangling him. Willie managed to pull a gun and shoot Calvin
dead.
Callahan's book describes Calvin as a drinker and a fighter, and
mentions that he was arrested many times for revenue and firearms
charges
Calvin was described in the Bill Grohse files as 'A
fine looking man with resolute look, regular features, slight beard.' I
believe all of Calvin's children were with Coose. Calvin is buried in
Mullins cemetary (Little Black Cemetary) "on the old George Swiney
place on Newman's Ridge".

Earlier I had listed Nancy Gibson's husband Elbe as being the son of
John and Mahala Mullins, but have since come across conflicting
information and have come to the conclusion that this Elbe was actually
the son of Nancy Mullins, and was a 1st cousin to John and Mahala's
Elby.
A news story appearing in 1972 on son Howard mentions his
father, Elbert Mullins, being killed over a moonshine still, ca 1879;
"[Howard] Mullins lost his father at age 8. The
father and another Melungeon argued at the Mullins moonshine still,
Elbert Mullins losing the argument." (Knoxville News Sentinel - April
24, 1972)
This would rule out the son of John and Mahala as being Howard's
father because he was still living in the later censuses. Also the
article mentions that Howard's mother was married 3 times, which would
fit correctly for Nancy Gibson.

Oliver and his 1st wife, Corda, moved to Ohio ca 1912,
where Corda died during child birth. According to Kelly Edwards, they
had 11 children together, though some died in infancy. Oliver then
married Sarah Jane Collins, who might have been related to Corda's
family, who bore 4 sons. Oliver sho and killed Sarah Jane on May 17,
1932 at their home in Hamersville, Ohio. Oliver spent the rest of his
life in a Hospital for the criminally insane in Lima, Ohio. His two
youngest children from Corda went to live with their older sister, Mary
Ann, while the 4 sons with Sarah Jane went to live with Minnie Collins,
Sarah Jane's sister.
Notes for Coda Gibson:
Corda was apparently 13 yrs old when she married Oliver. Corda
died giving birth to their eleventh child, who also died. This
info came from Kelly Edwards. According to Johnnie Rhea, Cordy was the
Cordelia listed as the granddaughter of Keener Gibson. Not sure which
child of Keener's is Cordy's parent.

Patton was described in the Grohse Papers as "Fairlyv large man,
forceful character, but inclined to handle liquor. Made money. Was a
good soldier during Spanish-American War. Red faced." Patton was killed
in an ongoing fued with the Spurlock brothers.
From the Grohse Papers:
"Patton killed Henry Miser, and is said to have killed five other
men. He carried a silver dollar for each man he killed. They are buried
in his casket. On the other hand, I do not know that he counted himself
a 'killer' at all. I knew him as a large freindly man . He was killed
by John and Pleas Spurlock in Indiana on one of his farms (Salem),
supposedly fo hisr killing of their father back in Lee Co., VA. Five or
six of his boys were in WWI. Patton moved from Vardy Valley to near
Salem, Indiana. It is also said that Patton carried a .45 Colt revolver
with six notches on it." Grohse attributed the abve statement to Rev.
Arthur H Taylor.
In the book "Lest We Forget" by Jim Callahan, he says that
Conner Bales dug up Patton's grave right after his funeral and robbed
his casket of the 6 silvere dollars.

Lan was described in the Will Grohse Papers as "tall,
spare, looked as if he had poor eyes" (he did go blind). He was said to
be an avid hunter, and was listed as being a 'Tanner' in a later census
(1900 or 1910). Lan m. Mary COLLINS ca.1896. After Mary's death, Lan
married Margie Stewart, dau. of John and Causby Stewart. I
believe Lan lived on Powell's Mt., near the TN/VA border, as that is
where he's buried. He died in 1952.
Lan was listed on the 1880 Hancock Co census as Lan
JOHNSON, his mother's maiden name, in the household of Alfred GOINS,
his step-father. Perhaps this was out of anger for Lan's father, Wilson
Mullins. But as far as I know, Lan was always known as Lan Mullins.
Lan went blind as he got older, I believe he had
cataracts. There is a story about when he was an old man, and lived up
on Powell's Mt. He could barely see, but he still loved to hunt and
visit people. Someone would just sort of point
him in the right direction. Once, when he was in his 80's, he didn't
make it back up the mountain before it got dark. Everyone was worried
that he was lost or might freeze because it was cool weather. The next
morning, they found him sitting by a fire at the foot of the mountain,
patiently waiting for it to get light enough to get home. That was the
last time he came off the mountain.

Notes for Willie Davidson:
According to Jim Callahan's book, "Lest We Forget - The Melungeon
Settlement on Newmans Ridge", Willie shot and killed his uncle, Calvin
Mullins, behind Mahala Mullins' house. Willie was lame in one leg and
limped when he walked, as he didnt use a cane. Calvin accused Willie of
having an affair with his wife "Coose", and chased him out the back
door with a shotgun. Calvin struck Willie in the face with the gun,
knocking his eye out of socket and partially blinding him. Calvin
pounced on Willie and started choking him, but Willie was able to draw
his .38 and shoot Calvin. Willie was acquitted, due to his handicap,
and the view that he was acting in self defence. Willie had many
children and lived to an old age, but wore a patch over his bad eye and
always walked with a limp.

Notes for Howard Mullins:
Howard was said to have been over 110 yrs old when he
died. One source says he was born Oct. 28, 1861, but the 1880 Hancock
Co census casts doubt on that (see newspaper story below).
The Knoxville News Sentinel did an amusing story on him a few weeks
before his death, here are a few excepts;
“Knoxville News-Sentinel
April 24, 1972
By Willard Yarbrough
SNEEDVILLE, Tenn., April 26, 1972 - Spring Air was nippy along
Blackwater
Creek in Vardy Valley. So chilly, in fact, that Hoard Mullins
lifted his
hands with palms exposed to coal-fed flames of the open fire.
Such delicate
hands, calloused from field work and 110 winters spent in isolated hill
country - where necessities of life long since have become luxuries to a
mysterious people to whom Mullins belongs.
He is one of the last of the Melungeons, oldest of them all in Hancock
County,
which has been home to the Melungeons for 200 years. Those left -
in Snake
Hollow, Blackwater, Vardy and Mulberry - are few in number, Most have
left the
hills for jobs in cities far and near. And time is catching up
with those
remaining.
In 1931 there were 40 Melungeon families living on Newman's Ridge above
their
ancestral home. Today, only two families remain on the steep
ridges.
Genealogist William P. Grohse Sr., who lives near Mullins, estimates
there may
be under 200 families left in the country.”
“Old-timers remember worse times, but they consider they were fortunate
even
then. Melungeon men and women many, many years ago worked all day
in a
farmer's fields just for the food they ate lunch. Melungeons
always have been
excellent moonshiners, though this is mostly in the past. Mrs.
Mullins
remembers when she and her first husband lived next door to Howard
Mullins,
who she later married. "Howard would fire up his still and I'd
build up my
fire under my washpot, so anybody going along the road would think I was
washing. Neighbors helped each other. I guess I'd wash
three or four times a
week, or pretend to, and hang my clothes on the line to hid Howard's
still
from sight."
Quit Drinking at 90
How has Grandpap Mullins lived to be 110?
"He was drunk most of his life," she said. "That might have
helped preserve
him. He quit drinking 20 years ago, but there were many times I'd
have to
take the mule and sled and find him passed out drunk up a hollow.
"We both
chew tobacco. I do because I don't want to smell his breath," she
said,
pointing to her now blind husband as he chewed Beechnut as if it were
chewing
gum. "He chews two packs a day."
Mullins hasn't been out of Vardy for more than a year, his last venture
being
to Sneedville. He hasn't seen a doctor in years, either, and used
only
aspirin for medicine. Mullins lost his father at age 8. The
father and
another Melungeon argued at the Mullins moonshine still, Elbert Mullins
losing
the argument. Howard Mullins, who has been chewing tobacco for
101 years, is
the oldest child in his family. His mother was married three
times. Howard's
son, Burkett, 78, visits at times.”
“ Age in doubt
They'll really never know, these vanishing Americans, their true
origin. Some
aren't sure of their ages, either. Grohse, a German who settled
in Vardy
because he married the great-great-great- granddaughter of Vardy
Collins, said
the 1880 Census listed Howard Collins' age at that time as 7. if
so, that
would make him only 99 and not 10, the birthday being 1873. But
Mullins says
he is 110.”
