DEMO 2005 REVIEWS

BLOOD CHAMBER (GER) Geilomat ! - Michael Hauptmann

BRUTALISM (HOL) Good to hear in the year 2005 this kind of music is still made.. Extinction agenda (U.S.A.) take us back to 80's and 90's aggressive death/thrash with a lot of variation in tempo. Guitarriffs are fast or groovy empowered by dynamical drumming and sickening screaming vocals. Sound is a little bit messy but keeps up the great vibe that should be expressed in this kind of music. Oppression (Sweden) songs are take from their demo "T.P.A.S." which is already reviewed on this website. You don't have to hurry over there because you could buy any release of these thrashing bastards immediately if you like old school "in your face" speedthrash. Great split!!! - Twan

CHRONICLES OF CHAOS (USA) Similar to the way thrash metal has evolved in Australia and Canada into hybridized super-thrash with minute elements of both black and death metal, this US group unleashes a three track salvo of blazing speed and promise that bears its influence without kneeling to retro stupidity. This band is actually only a two-piece as of now, featuring an ex-member of December Wolves on drums. Though I can't really make out the bass, the actual delivery here is full and the drums, vocals and guitars are balanced well in this filthy but pummeling sound, underlying a mephitic air within the music and the band's psycho-war lyrical explorations. I see them touting Znowhite of all fucking bands as influential on their site, but what manifests is closer to Razor or Voivod, keeping things fast with barbaric riffs (but not cheaply catchy) and some reserved leads here and there. Overall, this is some of best work I've heard yet in the twilight of cassette demos; they seem to take their craft seriously and are worth paying attention to for now. - Todd DePalma

DEADTIDE (USA) A little math lesson now, Voltanix + Iconslaughter = Extinction Agenda. Both handle bass and guitar while Voltanix handles the drums and Iconslaughter does the vocals. At least according to the press material anyway, it might just be Schmier using an alias. Yes, he is a dead ringer for the Destruction mainman, which I mean only as the highest of praise. I'm sure these guys love Destruction actually due to the rest of the music, which is thrashy as all hell. Yeah, this is an old school thrashkicking. The production is pretty raw though nowhere near mud. In fact I'd say the production reminds me of Eternal Devastation by, you guessed it folks, Destruction. This is an album that depends on how you feel about older Destruction really. If that isn't your thing then you know nothing, I mean you may not like this. If you wish every album could be Sentence of Death, then give this a try. Sadly it's only three songs and nine minutes long, but that's the only bad thing I can say about it. - K.Huckins

GUTS OF DARKNESS (FRA) THHRRAASSHHHHHHHH !!!!!!!!! Buy it or die! - Pokemonslaughter

KASTRATOR (???) Whoaou!! Finally an Old School Thrash Metal tape to put itself into our ears. And not of the least, cause we have new good Thrash Metal bands Extinction Agenda and Oppression on the same tape! Extinction Agenda plays a Thrash Metal in the vein of early Slayer, Exodus, Razor and Kreator for example. Their music is very brutal with old School Thrash Metal parts and some loud sounds. Vocals are wild and hateful but not really powerful, indeed, they are back to the music with movies samples between each song. There are members of December Wolves and Serpent Eclipse in this band. The second formation that figures on this tape is Oppression, a very interesting, effective and original Thrash Metal band in the vein of Dark Angel, old Slayer or old Sadus with its own touch. This Swedish combo performs a Thrash Metal in the oldest way embellished with some guitar solos, catchy and raging riffs. Concerning vocals, this singer is not a singer; it is more as if he was a sort of actor playing with his voice as the great Jello Biaffra does!! Indeed, the song can be compared to a roller coaster rising and descendant with an extreme aptitude and an extraordinaire energy! Oppression is an impressive and great band! Good tape with two cool Thrash Metal bands playing bay Area music! - ???

KLASMA (GER) Good ol' Gab can't help doing it. And releases another split tape. Besides the americans of EXTINCTION AGENDA, OPPRESSION from Sweden offer new material. They already were present at a split with Deep Vein and Bloody Sign. In EXTINCTION AGENDA we can find Voltanix and (meanwhile) Brian Oblivion, which were members of the Black Metal band December Wolves, if someone remembers. But it doesn't mean anything here, because the three-pack (with vocalist and bass player Iconslaughter) celebrates Thrash Metal of the brand "Teutonicus" with a little Speed impact. The three songs of their recent demo kicks heavily ass. As oldschool as the outfit of the tape, so is the musick of EXTINCTION AGENDA. Give a fuck to trends. Give a fuck to melodies. They thrash as there weren't the last fifteen, twenty years. Though the guys actually gathered end of last year, they sound like a perfectly fitting team. Even the sound will become better with the currently new axe-man. OPPRESSION, as I said, hail from Sweden and prefer the Bay Area variation of Thrash. Like Extinction Agenda OPPRESSION provide their new three track demo. One thing in between: if I get it right, the guys fired their shouter. At last! Unfortunately he did the recent stuff. "To sing" would be a flattered word. This yodeling is powerless, without pressure and absolutely nerving. I hope that the new shouter (Olof Wikstrand) will bring in some verve. So if we delete the "vocals", there remains a quite cool wrecking, which brings some melodies along. The band reduces the dominant bass sound of the older stuff a little bit. But it's even good to hear anyhow. So what, EXTINCTION AGENDA are quite more authentic. And I wait for more stuff of OPPRESSION with a new mic torturer. - M.Riedel

LIVE 4 METAL (USA) I had a feeling this one was going to be a keeper. I like the band name, the logo is cool, and the cover is quite bad ass. Then when I read the band cites influences in the bio that include Slayer, Venom, Razor, Tankard, Pestilence, Sabbat, Exodus, and Kreator, I figured this might be an old school mutha of the highest order. Of course, words and images don’t mean shit and many bands fall flat on their collective face once the play button is hit. Not so here, as Extinction Agenda play some seriously ripping old school dirty thrash on this 10-minute (three songs) demo. The vocals of Iconslaughter are similar to what you might hear on an album by Usurper or Lair of the Minotaur, not to mention early Slayer. I happen to love that style of vocal. Musically, “Inter Arma Silent Leges,” “Trafficking Apathy,” and “Creature of Unconscious Design” are quality old school thrashers, and yes, the band’s self-described comparisons listed above are accurate. Not surprisingly, early Slayer, Kreator, and Venom figure prominently here. Nowadays, some might even call this blackened thrash and there is in fact some truth to the description. There’s a surprising amount of variety across these three tracks. It’s not that the band strays from the signature sound. It just means the up-tempo slaughter of “Inter Arma Silent Leges,” the mid-tempo malevolence of “Trafficking Apathy,” and the speeding freight train that is “Creature of Unconscious Design,” all of which are woven together by a thread of melody and sharp axe work, bode well for a future full-length. Two-word review: hot shit! - Scott Alisoglu

LORDS OF METAL (HOL) 763 copies of this tape have been made to promote Nihilistic Holocausts war against their so called "Thrash Gothenburp Gayness". Those who've read my reviews the past few months are aware that I personally adore the Gothenburg sound, so I'm not a brother in arms for this battle. This doesn't mean I'm an opponent to the Nihilistic Holocaust tapes, because I really like these thrashing metal split extravaganza. This cassette contains Extinction Agenda from the U.S. of A. and Oppression from Sweden. Oppressions 'T.P.A.S.'-demo which is featured on this cassette was already reviewed in our June issue, so I won't bother reviewing this demo again. Extinction Agenda has got a quite interesting line-up consisting of Iconslaughter (vocals, guitars, bass) and Voltanix (drums, guitars, bass). Iconslaughter was a member of Dungeonbat, Ironhide, and industrial black metal crossover act Ghidorah. He has released several CDs from each of these under his independent micro-label Storming Sky Industries. Voltanix was a member of seminal New England black metal outfit December Wolves up until the release of 'Completely Dehumanized' through Earache Records in 1998. He was later involved in several independent projects, which culminated in the release of his Serpent Eclipse album 'The Seven Desires and Wolves Blood' through Adipocere Records from France. There's only three songs on their 'Extinction Agenda' demo from 2005: 'Inter Arma Silent Leges', 'Trafficking Apathy' and 'Creature Of Unconscious Design' which are excellent examples of the "Eighties Thrash Metal Revisited"-Movement. Did you grow up with the likes of Kreator, Exodus, Tankard, Venom or Razor? Do not hesitate to get in touch with these maniacs! - Koen

METAL INVADER (GRC) Wow!!! What is this? Thrash Metal at its best! EXTINCTION AGENDA arrived like a thunder in my CD player and they really blew up my head. Excellent work right in the veins of 80's Thrash Metal, just like if this demo was recorded about 20 years ago and it is also in a very high level. This band pays great respect to legendary groups such as SODOM, SLAYER, KREATOR, and RAZOR. Raw power unfolds every single second from each song in this demo that sure is the best unofficial work that I've heard lately. If EXTINCTION AGENDA were created back in the 80's decade now they would sure be one of the best and most cult bands in the Thrash Metal scene worldwide. In my eyes they don't have nothing to envy from any great band, except of course the originality, a fact that is not bad at all, because we don't listen to something new every now and then. I will not write anything more about this band except the following question: haven't you heard them yet?... -Andreas Kourtidis

METAL NIGHTMARE (USA) Goddamn... I'm impressed. This three track CDR demo has some killer extreme death/thrash that sounds like it was created by some berzerk Australians. But this is an American act, and features a former member of DECEMBER WOLVES. Style-wise, this has the same kind of spirit running though it that ORDER FROM CHAOS had. Currently, there are only two members, but they're working on finding a bassist and a second guitarist so that they can move out of the realm of studio band and into that of live act. I'm really into the thrashing death that I hear in these three songs, and can't really remember the last demo level band I felt this way about since the first time I heard WEHRWOLFE. Hopefully this is just the beginning for EXTINCTION AGENDA. Support!! - Tom Wren

METAL REVIEW (USA) I'm irritated at how short this review is, mainly because I feel like there's a lot to be said of Extinction Agenda, but I lack the expertise to analyze it bit by bit, and the demo lacks the necessary number of tracks to give me the greatest feel for the band in full. In the end, it doesn't matter, as all that needs to be said is that this is one of the better demos I've heard in some time. Expressing their penchant for classic thrash ala Slayer, Kreator, and Exodus, Extinction Agenda are extremely proficient in replicating the sounds of the old and resurrecting them with a vigor rarely seen. Vocalist Iconslaughter has a vocal range which bears an undisputable similarity to Tom Araya's, minus the random shriekings. Their primary sound could be described as early Voivod paired with a nod to Pestilence. The leads are appropriate and clued in to the genre, giving a fine balance of swift musicianship with an expected and welcomed maniacal inflection. Although so short, there's enough discrepancy on the demo to intrigue me further as to where they'd end up after 35 minutes of material. Comprised of only three songs, Extinction Agenda are using this demo as a chance to create a stir for an upcoming full-length, I'm hoping. It'd be a tragedy for a band revitalizing such a needed and much missed sound with such a no-nonsense attitude to fizzle away into nothing. To anyone reading this, please go check out the band's site and take a listen to the samples to give yourself a better idea of how worthy of your time this band currently is, and will continue to be in the future. - Drew Ailes

METALLIAN (CAN) Extinction Agenda is the latest band of former December Wolves' man Voltanix. The band is clearly inspired by the early days of death and thrash metal. Those were the days when the innovative sounds of Razor, Sacrifice, Slayer and Dark Angel ruled the scene. The band is just a duo at the moment, but that apparently has not deterred the sound. The three songs on disc are full of hatred and venom, spewing vicious evil with a sense of vintage sincerity. The lyrics are enigmatic and hardly the stuff of trendy musings. Contact the band at exagenda@veribox.net or visit exagenda.cjb.net for information. - Ali "The Metallian"

Weiter so! Was will man mehr? Both bands are old school influenced and don't give a flying fuck about the so-called "Thrash" Gothenburp gayness! Help them in their war against posership, and break your neck!" - Soew

SUPREME BRUTALITY (DEN) American thrashers Extinction Agenda are a relatively new band formed in late 2004, but this doesn't shine through in the music. Style-wise Extinction Agenda is not far away from the hybrid of black, death and thrash metal that has come from Australia (Destroyer 666, to name one) and Canada (Infernal Majesty, to name another). The band draw on influences from bands such as Slayer, Venom, Pestilence and Kreator which of course makes it really retro sounding, but that is also one of the main things about their music that appeal to me. Drummer and guitarplayer Voltanix used to play in the black metal outfit December Wolves and it does sound evident. While the band may draw on influences from various styles the black metal influences appear to be one of the strongest, but this could be due to the relatively thin and filthy sound that the demo has. Currently the band is only consist of two members, but Extinction Agenda is about to expand the line-up with a bassist and a second guitar player which of course ought to broaden their sound further. It's nice to hear a band that don't give into trends, but instead go in the opposite direction. Saying Extinction Agenda's music is unique would be overdoing it because it's all pretty much been heard before, but still I think the band has a lot to offer and they will be interesting to follow. - Per Laursen

TARTAREAN DESIRE (SWE) Wow. What keeps this record from getting a higher score is simply its brevity. When a full length exercise in ritualistic abuse is finally unleashed from the madmen in Extinction Agenda, watch the fuck out! This shit will wreck your neck, plain and simple, never mind what Overkill toldja. The accompanying press release states that Extinction Agenda formed out of a mutual passion for classic Thrash and Speed Metal, and a hatred for trend. Hell, yeah! The band is said to channel elements of early Slayer, Venom, ... Exodus, and Kreator into a modern medium. I think theyve nailed their influences plainly enough, although they didnt bother to mention increasing the octane or speed! Maybe its just me, but I hear a whole lot of Saduss brand of aggressive Thrash in this, particularly on the second track. Of course, I rather love Sadus and think not enough other people do. That anecdote aside, clear debts to Slayer are definitely present, most notably in the second half of the final song offered here for sacrifice. Only two sick bastards (Voltanix [nee Scott DeFusco], formerly of December Wolves, and Iconslaughter, of several other bands) were responsible for the killer nastiness on this demo, though a third (Brian Oblivion, also of the late December Wolves) has since been added to the fold. Get a bass player, boys, and youll surely be in business. For a demo, the sound quality is exceptional. The drumming is noteworthy in its all-out Thrash assault. The guitars riff right out of Hell and the vocals shred like it was 1985. This demo is no doubt being shopped to record labels and I hope its successful in its task, as well it should be. I cant believe its only ~10 minutes long.... Whats next? - Tony Belcher

WORM GEAR (USA) This 3 song demo from the east coasts Extinction Agenda was a breath of fresh air, for the bands affinity for classic thrash/speed metal makes their music full of pleasant nostalgia as well as some superior riffing. Featuring former December Wolves illuminist Scott DeFusco (Voltanix) and also "Iconslaughter" who was in a handful of lesser known bands like Ghidorah and Ironhide; this duo has offered up this 3 song demo to generate label interest, which should easily be obtained due to their focused guitar work and well-written compositions. The vocals are of the sinister shouting variety which fits the razor sharp crunching and tremolo speed riffing perfectly as Extinction Agenda sculpt their way through blast-less speed, Kerry King esque whammy bar dives and some very well written harmonies that rise and fall like an aerial dogfight amidst the hammering delivery and hook laden riff work. This material could have very comfortably existed during the late 80's and earned this duo a lot of recognition for they're firmly cemented in strong Thrash dedication and well written songs. This demo possesses a great production and a lot of heart. Expect to hear great things from this band in the future. Fans of note worthy thrash-minded bands like Audiopain should drop Extinction Agenda a line for more information. - Marty Rytkonen

ZERO TOLERANCE (UK) Blow me down, totally teeth-gnashing thrash burrowing well into the black, not unlike earliest Sacrifice, Slaughter’s Strappado, or Destruction’s first EP – and hey, why not throw in primeval Sodom and Kreator, too? – which is not all that surprising considering this comes courtesy of not one but now two December Wolves. Above all, this trio of trainwreck tracks maintain a resident evil whilst keeping proceedings tight yet loose, dirty yet discernible. Thus, the perfect antidote to metrosexual Christians playing, er, “thrash.” - Ricker Groinley
