Things were happening
at the homestead,
for Clancy fell in
love with Nancy
And invited her to
a dance,
but she didn’t want
to go
It wasn’t anything
fancy,
and the music at best
was chancy
T’would be held in
the old wool shed
out at The Overflow.
So as Nancy wouldn’t
go,
Clancy then asked
pretty Daisy
And although a little
hazy,
She said she’d love
to go
But her father loved
his Daisy
and he went a little
crazy
And forbade her to
go out
for she was far too
young you know.
Then he thought that
he’d ask Lena
who seemed to be a
little keener
But alas no one had
seen her
so she must have been
away
But then he spotted
sweet Amanda
as she sat on her
veranda
So he sauntered over
to her to
just offer her “G’day”.
But once again sweet
Amanda
said that she too
wouldn’t pander
To his wishes and
poor Clancy thought it
such a terrible thing
to do
Then his last resort
was Susie,
who was never very
choosy
And she thought it
was a doozy
of a thing for him
to do.
But she too had a feller
down at the bank
he was the teller
And she’d promised
she would partner him
at the upcoming dance.
So there we have out
hero,
His score a big fat
zero
Feeling so dejected
that he’d used up
his last chance.
Then someone had told
Nancy
of the plight of our
poor Clancy
And although still
heeling antsy,
she agreed that she
would go
And it made poor Clancy
happy
such a snappy happy
chappie
As he realised at
long last that
he wouldn’t miss the
show.
And on their way home
from the dance
he took another chance
And he asked Nancy
if she’d wed him,
but she said she didn’t
know
So there you have
the story
full of doubt, pathos
and glory
Of the lead up to
the dance
held out at ‘The Overflow’.
