Family name history Giltenan
The Irish family name Giltenam is clasified as being of personal name origin. According to scholars the "oldest and most prevasive type of surname is that derived from a given name". Such family nams may be derived from a parental first name or from the font name of the grandfather or indeed a more remote ancestor of the origianal bearer of the surname. with regard to the family name Giltenan it is an corrupt form of the Gishenan predominantly found in Co.Longford. It is an anglicized form of the Irish Gaelic "Mac Giolla Seanain", indicating "son of the devotee of St. Seanan" , an ancient Gaelic personal name of uncertain origin, believed to be derivative from the Irish word " sean " meaning " old ,in the sense of experienced, wise ". St. Seanain was a sixth century Irish saint born in Kilrush,Co. Clare. Variants of the surname Giltenan include Gunshenan and MacGils(h)enan. The sept of Mac Giolla Seanain originated in Tir Eoghain (territory comprising Co. Tyrone and adjacent areas of Co. Derry ) and as such they were part of Cenel Eoghain, the clan name of the O'Neills , who clam descend from Eoghan, son of Niall of the Nine Hostages. However , today the name is also well known in north Leinster. Gunhinan has also been anglicized as Leonard and Nugent and the form Shannon is occasionally found in Co. Fermanangh. While it is accepted that surnames first made their appearance in Ireland in the tenth century it should be noted that there are a number of Irish names which have existed as hereditary family well before this period. The blazon of arms described below is associated with the name or a variant. BLAZON OF ARMS : Ermine two bars gules. translation : the fur ermine was considered the perfect emblem of Dignity. Glues (red) denotes Military Fortitude. CREST: A cockatrice wings elevated vert, tail nowed, combed and wattled gules. MOTTO: Decrevi. Translation: I have determined.

My Guiltinane Research kkelly_1998 (54/F/CA & NY) 1/20/01 6:19 pm Since I am new to the club, I thought I should let members know my research to date - I am looking for info on Patrick Guiltinan (cemetery stone spelling) and his wife Margaret (Mary) Fleming. Both are buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Rome, Oneida County, NY. He died in 1866, Margaret in 1859. I believe they had 4 children: Francis, Winifred, John and Bridget. There may have been more, I'm just certain of these at this point. John married Catherine Reed and they had 4 children. Francis married Bridget (last name unknown) and they had 10 children. I don't believe that Bridget married as she was single and working as a domestic until I lost her at the age of 35. Winifred married James Reed and had 9 children. I am descended from Winifred. I have more info on the descendents of these people, but just wanted to get out to you my area of research at this point. If any club members may be searching the same line or could offer ideas to pursue for further info, that would be great. I'm looking forward to ideas and data and hearing from you. Thanks, Kathy
