In response to messages from Ethel Taylor and Bob Crisp on 5-6-97
I am descended from William W Crisp. I do not know much about him. What I have on
children - other than Samuel Mathis - I got from another cousin named Doris Crisp. She
did not give me her sources - guess I need to ask for them. I'm sure she has some form
of documentation.
1850 census for Hopkins Co., TX p. 286 ln 55
William Crisp 67 farmer born NC
Elizabeth 61 born GA
John 24 farmer born KY
ln 56 Samuel Crisp 35 farmer born KY
(lists his family - this is Samuel Mathis)
1860 census for Cooke Co., TX, Gainesville
dwelling 525 Samuel Crisp 46 b KY farmer (this is Samuel Mathis)
Eliza J 40 Ky
Wm M 19 KY
James E 14 TX
Greenville 12 TX
Robt S 9 TX
Thos J 5 Tx
Eliza J 1 TX
(he later has son named Samuel Duzal among other children with different wife)
dwelling 522 John Crisp 39 b KY farmer (if age was misread as 39 instead of 34, would
match age from 1850 census)
Elizabeth 20 KY
Catherine 11 MO
Mary 4 Tx
Nancy 3 TX
Wm T 2 TX
Samuel D 1 TX
1860 census for Cooke Co., TX, Gainesville - continued
dwelling 395 John W/M Crisp 36 b KY blacksmith (can't be sure of middle initial from
census)
wife's name is hard to read age 20 b MO
Wm L 6 TX
Mary E 2 TX
John M 8/12 TX
from this I would guess that dwelling 522 was brother of Samuel, not dwelling 395
Doris Crisp's notes on William W Crisp
b abt 1783 NC
d 1855-1858 TX
occupation teacher
wife: Elizabeth Matthews
b abt 1789 GA
d 1868 TX
father: Oliver Matthews
mother: ? Evans
children:
Samuel Mathis Crisp b Oct 5 1814 Ky, d Oct 6 1890 TX
John M Crisp b Jun 23 1824 KY, d 1862 Gainesville TX
Martha "Betsy" Crisp b abt 1807 Barron Co KY, m James Ladlock Jr
Nancy Elizabeth Crisp b abt 1830, m James M Bailey
Eliza Jane Crisp b abt 1829, m Joseph Phillips
I am not sure how she determined that John M was son of William W. I have never seen
anything official that says what the "M" stands for. Does anyone else know where some
get that the "M" stands for Mancil?
A couple of generations later, there are lots of marriages between the Crisps and the Baileys.
I do not know anything else about this James Bailey.
Does anyone else in group know anything about any of these folks? I would like to have info.
I will send info on hanging in separate message.
