What Are The Chances? Part 1

7:00am in the Sipowicz/McDowell apartment

Connie is helping Theo to finish up packing for his four day Soccer camp.

Connie: Ok, big guy. I think you got everything you need.

Theo: Thanks mom.

This will be a new experience for all of them. This is the first extended time away from home for Theo. This is a first time of letting go for Connie and Andy. Connie turns to look at Theo. She hears a little something in his voice.

Connie: So, are you excited?

Theo: Yeah…..and a little scared.

Connie sits on the bed with Thoe and puts her arm around him. Andy is standing in the doorway. They do not know he is there.

Connie: You know, when I was your age, I went away to camp for the first time.

Theo: They had soccer camps back then?

Connie: (Smiling) Well, I went to a different kind of camp. I went to a Girl Scout camp.

Theo looks at her from the corner of his eye.

Theo: And were you…scared?

Connie: A little. But once I got on the bus and saw all my friends, I did feel a little better. And once I got to camp and saw all the neat things we were gonna do, I felt great.

Theo: (Looking at the floor and whispering) What about at night? Did you miss your mom and dad?

Connie: Oh, yeah. I did. But my mom told me that if I really miss them, just close my eyes and think about them. (Sliding something out of her pocket) And she gave me a picture of her and dad to keep under my pillow. And now I have one for you.

It was a picture of all of them that was taken after a snowstorm. They were outside the apartment playing in the snow. Joey’s mom took the picture and later gave it to Connie. Theo smiled as he looked at the picture.

Theo: That was a fun day.

Connie: It sure was. And camp will be fun too. Now, remember what you and I talked about. If at any time you feel like you want to come home, just call us and we will be there to get you. No matter what time, night or day. We’ll be there for you. I know its only four days…but my guess is that your gonna be so busy , you won’t have time to miss us.

Theo: You think? I’m sure I’ll miss yous.

Connie: I’m sure too sweetie. Give me a hug and then we’ll go find dad.

Theo holds her tight around the neck. Connie can feel the tears welling up. She quickly wipes her eyes and clears her throat.

Connie: Oh, look we almost forgot your camera.

Theo: Thanks mom. I feel better now. (Giving her a kiss on the cheek)

Connie: Good. Now, lets go find daddy.

Theo slings on his backpack and picks up his other bag and walks down the hall to the living room.

Theo: Mom? Did you pack my gameboy?

Connie: Yes.

Thoe: And some games?

Connie: Yes.

Andy: Hey, hey what’s with all the yellin’? Your gonna wake up Michelle.

Theo: Sorry dad. You ready?

Andy: Yeah, just a second while I check with mom about somethin’.

Andy goes into the kitchen and finds Connie trying to hide her tears.

Connie: This is just a four day camp. What is college gonna be like?

Andy: (Smiling as he gives her a hug) Yeah, huh?

Connie: Come on and get goin’ before he sees me.

Andy: (Planting a kiss on her lips) See ya at the house?

Connie: Yeah, go.

Theo: Come on dad. I want to get a seat with Joey. I don’t want to sit next to Katreena.

Andy: Heaven forbid that.

Thoe: Got that right.

Andy drives Theo to the PAL bus. They gather Theo’s belongings and bring them to the bus. Joey is already on the bus yelling for Theo to hurry up.

Joey: Hey, Theo! Hurry up before Katreena gets here.

Theo: Ok, be right there.

Andy: Come here a minute, Theo.

Andy takes Theo aside for a last minute chat. He squats down to be eye level with Theo.

Andy: Ok now remember, your one of the younger ones goin’. Don’t let anyone push you around.

Theo: Yes dad.

Andy: If you have any type of problem, make sure you find a councilor and tell them.

Theo: Yes dad.

Andy: Don’t forget you manners.

Theo: Yes dad. (Looking over his fathers head at the bus)

Andy: And remember what I told you about “good touches” and

Theo: Dad! We talked about this all week. I know what to do. I promise.

Andy looks at him. He is growing right before his eyes and there isn’t a thing he can do about it.

Andy: Alright, I just wanted to remind you is all.

Theo: (Rolling his eyes) Right dad, now may I please get on the bus?

Andy: Give me a hug first.

Theo wraps his arms tightly around his father’s neck.

Theo: (Whispering) It’s gonna be ok.

Andy: (Whispering back) I know.

Theo: I love you daddy.

Andy: I love you too son. Have a good time.

Theo takes a step back and smiles at his dad. Andy rumples his hair and gives him a wink.

Andy: Off you go.

Theo: See ya.

Theo turns and runs to the bus. He is now seated next to his friend Joey. All is right in his world. He has had a well-balanced morning. Love and reassurance form his mom. Protection and encouragement from his dad. Andy waits for the bus to pull out. He is happy and sad all at the same time. He says a silent prayer that all will go well for Theo and his friends. As the bus pulls away he can see Theo waving to him. It makes him smile and cry at the same time. As he walks back to his car, the cell phone rings.

Andy: Sipowicz.

Connie: Hey, its me.

Andy: You ok?

Connie: Yeah, Jr. and I are on our way out to Bellevue. Meet us there.

Andy: What’s up?

Connie: Car jacking victim. We’ll fill you in when you get there.

Andy: Good. On my way.

8:00am

54th & 3 Ave.

Apt. # B-5

Rita, Greg and Baldwin are investigating a murder. They are met on the scene by Officer Decker who fills them in.

Decker: DOA is a white female, 30 years old. Lives alone. She was found by the super.

Rita: I’ll talk to him.

Greg: Good. Any sign of forced entry?

Decker: No, but the kitchen window has been open for a few days. Super noticed it the other day when he was filling up one of the dumpsters. There’s also a fire escape back there.

Baldwin: What’s the victim’s name?

Decker: Nancy Alldean….stripper down at Bottoms Up.

Greg and Baldwin shoot a look at Decker.

Decker: The super told me, honest guys.

Greg: Took one hell of a beatin’. Not much blood around.

Baldwin: Yeah, mostly to the head. (Looking around the apartment) No real signs of a struggle. Looks like she was taped up. Look at this.

Baldwin points to her ankles, wrist and mouth. There was what looked like tiny pieces of duct tape stuck to her skin.

Baldwin: Any signs of a murder weapon?

Decker: No, not yet. You want me to notify Crime Scene?

Greg: Yeah, go ahead and call. I’ll call the ME and a bus.

Baldwin: Any next of kin we should call?

Decker: Don’t know.

Baldwin: Don’t know? You knew she was a stripper.

Decker: Cause the super made mention. (Under his breath) Ass hole.

Baldwin: I’ll start a canvas.

Rita introduces herself to the super, Lewis Roberts.

Rita: How did you come to find the body?

Lewis: Yesterday, the down stairs neighbor complained about a leak coming form this apartment. I needed to get in here to see what the problem was. I knocked and knocked and even called a few times … no response. This morning I just had a feelin’ somethin’ was wrong, so I used my key to get in and that’s what I found.

Rita: How long you been the super here?

Lewis: About ten years.

Rita: Can anyone verify your whereabouts for the last 24 hours? Wife, girlfriend?

Lewis: My daughter, she lives with me. She has MS. My wife left us when she was diagnosed.

Rita: How well did you know the victim?

Lewis: Pretty good I guess. Ms. Alldean has been here for almost two years now.

Greg: Good enough to know she was a stripper?

Lewis: Look, you got that part all wrong. She was a sweet kid, a good kid. She was going to NYU during the day to get her degree in accounting. She stripped to make money for tuition and make ends meet. She would stop in and see my daughter. She even sat with her one night when I had to go out and get some supplies for a job I was doin’.

Rita: Any boyfriends or regular visitors?

Lewis: No boyfriends, she was just getting over a messy divorce.

Rita: Do you know the x-husbands name?

Lewis: No, she only referred to him as “my x”. She did mention the other day she thought she saw him in the neighborhood. Asked me if anyone came looking for her.

Rita: What day was that?

Lewis: I think it was Saturday.

Rita: Was she afraid of him?

Lewis: Didn’t really say, but from the look on her face I could tell she was spooked.

Greg: So, no wild parties and the such?

Lewis: No way! This was a good kid.

Rita: Did you notice any strangers hanging around?

Lewis: No.

Rita: Any neighbors we should talk to?

Lewis: Yeah, Alice Rice. Next door neighbor. But she is on vacation this week; she should be back sometime time this weekend.

Greg: Any family we can notify?

Lewis: Yeah, I think her sister is the emergency contact on her card, let me get it for you.

Rita and Lewis go to his apartment to get the information from her tenant card. Rita meets Angie who is about 15 years old. They have a nice talk. Rita thanks Lewis.

Rita: Ok, if you remember any thing or see something suspicious, give me a call. (Handing him her card) Nice meeting you Angie, be well.

Angie: Same here, thanks.

Rita, Greg and Baldwin meet back at the car and head out to canvas the building facing the apartment where the victim was found.

8:30am

Bellevue ER

Andy arrives at Bellevue to find Connie and Jr. waiting for him in the ER.

Andy: It’s 8:30 in the morning and already 90 degrees out there. What’s up?

Connie: Female car jacking victim. Same area as the previous three. Lieu wants this tied up before Task Force jumps in.

Andy: Same MO?

Jr.: Yeah, female leavin’ for work when two white guys with a gun take her for a ride then dump her into traffic.

Andy: Any witnesses?

Connie: Uniform has three people for us to talk to.

Andy: When can we talk to the victim?

Jr.: The nurse over there said in about five to ten minutes. Victim is awake and seems stable.

Connie: How was Theo?

Andy: Great. Saw Joey and took off for the bus.

Jr.: And how did dad do?

Andy: (Looking at Jr.) Good. Fine. Great.Where’s this nurse at?

Jr. points her out to Andy. He goes over to speak to her.

Jr.: Connie, you get my vote for woman of the year.

Connie: Yeah, whys that?

Jr.: A female detective in New York City, mother of three keepin’ it all together.

Connie: (Looking at him a bit confused) Mother of two.

Jr. shoots a look over in Andy’s direction then back to her with a smile on his face. Connie finally gets his drift.

Connie: Some days, Jr. just some days.

She pokes him in the ribs with the antenna of the radio and Jr. makes like he’s boxing.

Jr.: Come on. I ain’t afraid of you.

Connie: (Still poking him) That’s not your problem…your problem is I ain’t afraid of you.

Andy turns and sees them messing around.

Andy: Are you two gonna play all day or would you like to get some work done?

Jr. and Connie look at each other then back to Andy.

Jr.: She started it!

Connie: I did not.

Andy looks at them as if they had three heads.

Andy: What?

Jr.: Never mind.

Andy returns his attention to the nurse.

Jr.: (Under his breath) It’s gonna be one of those days, huh?

Connie: (Whispering back) I’ll talk to him in a bit.

Jr.: A little separation anxiety?

Connie: Guess you could say that.

Andy rejoins Connie and Jr.

Andy: Nurse says it will be a few more minutes.

Jr.: Anyone want some coffee? My treat.

Connie: I’ll have a water if your buying.

Andy: No, I’m good.

Jr.: I’ll be right back.

Andy and Connie take a seat the waiting area. Connie takes this opportunity to talk to Andy.

Connie: Hey, you ok?

Andy: Yeah, fine.

Connie: (adjusting his tie) He’s gonna be fine.

Andy: (Looking into her eyes) I know. I kinda overheard you two talkin’ this morning. I appreciate what you said and did for Theo. Him feelin’ better made me feel better. I’m sorry I was gruff with you and Jr.

Connie: We’ll let it go this time, but remember I miss him too.

Andy: Yeah.

Very quietly Andy places his hand on her knee, giving it a squeeze and her a wink. He hears a very familiar voice down the hall. Andy gets up and sees Eddie Gibson walking down the hall.

Andy: You gotta be kiddin me? Gibson, what are you doin’ here?

Eddie: Whadda mean? My niece has been brought here.

Andy: What?

Eddie: Cynthia. She was car jacked this mornin’. What are you doin’ here?

Connie: We caught the case.

Eddie: You kiddin’ me?

Andy: Why would she kid about somethin’ like that?

Eddie: Have you seen her yet? Where is she?

Connie: No we haven’t seen her yet. We are waiting to hear from the doctor. I think she is curtain area four.

Eddie: I’m gonna go see her.

Andy: Gibson, Gibson, (Grabbing his elbow) Take a minute here. Let the doctors do what they have to do and lets stay out of the way.

Eddie: That’s my niece in there.

Andy: I’m well aware of that. Let them do what they have to do. Connie, Jr. and I will go in and see her and then you can go in.

Eddie: What, you lookin’ to lock me out?

Andy: (Rolling his eyes and letting go of a large sigh) No, we are not gonna lock you out. You know how important it is that we speak to the victim, alone.

If there is family around, they tend to hold back on some things which holds us back. Let us do our job.

Eddie: (Looking and pointing at Connie) I want to know everything she tells you. Verbatim. Understood?

Connie: You got my word on it Eddie.

Eddie: Andy and Cynthia share a past together you know?

Andy: That does it.

He takes Uncle Eddie by the arm and leads him away from Connie.

Eddie: Andy, what the hell you doin’ here?

Andy: I’m giving you one warning…don’t bring that up again. You got me? That was the past and its personal.

Jr. returns with Connie’s water and sees Andy and Uncle Eddie having a pow-wow.

Jr.: What the hell is Eddie doin’ here?

Connie: It was his niece who was car jacked this morning.

Jr.: No way.

Connie: Yeah, way. Wouldn’t you just love to be a fly on the wall in that conversation?

Eddie: Well, if its that personal, maybe you shouldn’t be on this case.

Andy: (Getting in Uncle Eddies face) Don’t you presume to tell me how to do my job. Just stay out of our way.

Eddie: That’s nice, real nice. Is this how you treat the family member of victims?

Andy: Just the ones I know are gonna be a pimple on my ass.

Doctor Monzak: Detectives?

Everyone joins Dr. Monzak

Eddie: How is she? How’s my niece?

Dr. M.: She’s good for now. We have to get her up to x-ray to check for internal injuries. For now she is in stable condition.

Jr.: Can we talk to her?

Dr. M.: Yeah, but not too long…like I said we need to get her upstairs ASAP.

Andy: Doc, do me a favor (Nodding towards Uncle Eddie) That’s the victims uncle, retired off the job, keep his busy till we’re done.

Dr. M.: Sure, what’s his name?

Andy: Eddie Gibson.

Andy, Connie and Jr. go in to see Cynthia.

Nurse: We’ll be taking her up to x-ray shortly.

Jr.: Ok, we shouldn’t be too long.

Cynthia: Hi Andy.

Andy: Hi Cynthia. This is Detectives Clark and McDowell. (Avoiding her gaze)

Cynthia: Hello. Is my uncle here yet?

Connie: Yes, he’s speaking to the doctor right now. He’ll be in real soon.

Jr.: Could you tell us what happened this morning?

Cynthia: I was leaving for work at about 6:45. I got in my car and noticed it was hot so I rolled down my window and started the car. Next thing I know some guy grabs me by the hair and bangs my head against the door. I saw stars. Then he puts a gun to my face and tells me to move over. So I did.

She looks at Andy. He won’t look at her. She starts to fill up.

Cynthia: One man got in the back seat and one got in the driver’s seat. The one in the back had his arm around my neck so I was pinned to the seat. I could see him in the side view mirror. We drove around for a while when they decided to dump me into traffic. The driver reached over and opened the door and pushed me out.

Connie positioned herself between Cynthia and Andy. As Cynthia spoke, Connie could see Andy’s jaw getting tighter and tighter. Andy would not look at Cynthia. Connie took the lead in questioning Cynthia.

Connie: Both of these guys were white?

Cynthia: Yes

Connie: Could you give us a description of the two men?

Cynthia: The one in the back seat has very short brown hair…a buzz cut I think its called. He has green eyes. I don’t know how tall he is. (Pause) He does have a tattoo on the inside of his arm.

Connie: Do you remember what it is?

Cynthia: It’s a dragon…I think, something like that.

Connie: That’s good Cynthia (rubbing her shoulder) That’s gonna be real helpful. What do you remember about the driver?

Cynthia: (Starting to cry a bit) He was tall, he had to move the seat all the way back. He has black hair…short on top then longer in the back…almost collar length. Brown eyes…as far as weight…I’m no good at guessing’ that.

Connie: About the driver, did he have any distinguishing marks on him anywhere?

Cynthia: Not that I could see.

Connie: (Turning to look at Andy and Jr.) Could you guys excuse us for a few minutes?

Andy and Jr. look at each other then back to Connie. She gives them a nod in the direction of the curtain.

Andy: Yeah, we’ll be right outside.

Connie: Now Cynthia, in the other car jackings, the women reported being fondled or inapproretly touched. Did that happen this morning?

Cynthia: (Avoiding Connies eyes with tears falling down her face) Somewhat.

Connie: Its important that you tell me what happened.

Cynthia: The guy in the back seat had his hand down my blouse. He kept pinching and pulling on my breast. The driver tried to put his hand up my skirt. I kept trying to move away…but I was pinned you know. He finally got a hold of my panties and…

Connie: Take your time, its ok. (Rubbing her shoulder)

Cynthia: He pulled them off and grabbed my privates. (Through her tears) They kept telling me they were going to rape me. Next thing I know, they throw me into the street.

Connie: You have been real brave and real helpful. You try and get some rest now. Do you want me to get your uncle?

Cynthia: In a minute. Could you stay for a few minutes…just till I get myself together?

Connie: Sure.

Connie got her some tissues and helps her to clean up.

Cynthia: Thank you.

Connie: No problem.

Cynthia: I mean for askin’ Andy and the other detective to leave. I wouldn’t have been able to get through that if they were here.

Connie: I know…we girls have to stick together.

Cynthia: Please don’t tell Uncle Eddie all of what happened?

Connie: I won’t. What you told me will stay between us. I’ll have to put it in my report, but that’s as far as it goes.

Cynthia: Thanks.

Connie: You ready for Uncle Eddie?

Cynthia: Yeah, thanks again.

Connie: We’ll be back later to check in on you and fill you in on the case. Try and get some rest.

Jr. and Andy meet Connie half way down the hall.

Connie: I hope you don’t mind me asking you two to leave the room. I just felt she was a bit uncomfortable with two men in the room. These are our guys Andy.

Andy: Did they?

Connie: Yeah.

Andy: Pricks…ok lets get back to the house to fill in the boss.

10:00am

15th squad

Lieu: So you think she was killed and then dumped back at the apartment?

Greg: I tell ya Lieu, for the beatin’ she took, there is very little blood and not much disturbed in the apartment. CSU is lookin’ the place over.

Lieu: You get any kind of vibe from the super?

Rita: No, he’s more of a father figure. Seems like a decent guy.

Lieu: Any family to notify? Any kids involved?

Baldwin: No kids. She has a sister coming in shortly.

Lieu: Ok, keep me posted.

Connie, Jr. and Andy enter T-Rods office to fill him in on their case.

Lieu: Andy, this is your case?

Andy: Yeah, why?

Lieu: No reason, I just wanted to know who was gonna run it for me is all.

Andy: Right. Ah, victim is Cynthia Bunin, Eddie Gibson’s niece.

Lieu: Wow, that sucks.

Andy: On many levels. Anyways, these are our guys. She was able to give an accurate account of the events this morning. A good description which matches the others.

Lieu: They recover the car?

Jr.: No not yet. We have an APB out on it.

Lieu: How is she?

Connie: Very shaken up, but hanging in there.

Lieu: Ok, lets see if they recover the car. Just keep me posted on what’s going on.

John knocks and enters the office.

John: Excuse me, but the desk Sargent just called up and said the uniforms have your witnesses from this morning.

Lieu: Ask them to bring them up. Thanks John.

Jr.: One on one interview?

Andy: Yeah.

As they leave the office, T-Rod gives Connie a nod to hang back.

Connie: What’s up?

Lieu: I was just gonna ask you the same thing. Andy ok with this case?

Connie: (Knowing she has to tell him something) Yeah, it’s just that Theo left for soccer camp this morning. He’ll be gone for four days.

Lieu: Separation anxiety?

Connie: Does it show?

Lieu: Just a bit.

They meet back at Andy’s desk.

Andy: They are in separate rooms.

Jr.: I’ll take the pokey.

Connie: I’ll take the coffee room.

Andy: I guess that leaves me with door number three.

They head out to do their interviews. Jr. is in the catching area. Andy is close behind.

Greg: Hey Andy. Did I hear right? Gibson’s niece was car jacked this mornin’?

Jr. is behind Andy waving his hands; mouthing NO and making a slashing motion towards Greg. Greg finally sees Jr. and tries to change the subject.

Andy: Yeah, what about it Medavoy?

Greg: Ah, um, no, I was just wonderin’ is all.

Andy: About what?

Greg: How she’s doin’ and such.

Andy: As well as can be expected.

Greg: Good. That’s good news. (He quickly shuffles some papers around)

Baldwin: What was that all about?

Greg: That was about Jr. saving me from havin’ Andy jump down my throat. Andy and Gibson’s niece dated for a while a few years back.

Baldwin: That right?

Greg: Remind me to thank Jr. later on.

A woman enters the squad and speaks to John. She is Vera Gilham.

John: Decetives, Ms. Gilham to see you.

Baldwin: Thanks John. Ms. Gilham, I’m Det. Jones. And this is Det. Medavoy and Det. Ortez. Thank you for coming in.

Vera: Sure.

Rita: Why don’t we sit over at my desk?

Greg rolls over his chair for Vera as the others take seat at their desk.

Vera: Do you have any idea who did this to my sister?

Rita: No not yet, we are working on it. We understand your sister was just getting over a messy divorce.

Vera: Yes. Lance, Lance Alldean. A real ass hole. (Seeing their reaction) Sorry. Lance liked to live beyond his means, which he usually got through gambling.

Baldwin: I know this sounds off the wall, but would you happen to know his bookies name?

Vera: Umm, Nancy did mention it once before…this guy came to the house. Apparently, Lance owed him big. He thought Nancy would pay him. She told him to get lost. What was his name? Jimmy, Jimmy…it was color like White, or Black or Green, something like that.

Greg: Do you know if Lance has any sort of criminal record?

Vera: No, not as far as I know. I really didn’t know him or like him that much. Lance fancies himself a real ladies man. Nancy caught him cheating on her with his “secretary”.

Baldwin: Any reason to think he would do something like this?

Vera: I don’t think so…unless you count wounded ego as a motive. Nancy walked out on him.

Greg: Had he ever been violent with her when they were together?

Vera: Not to my knowledge. Nancy and I were close; I’d like to think that if someone were doing something like that to her she would have told me.

Rita: Did Lance know she was a stripper?

Vera: Doubt it. I think he’s living on Long Island. That’s where they lived when they were first married. He may have moved, I’m not 100% on that.

Greg: Was you sister seein’ anyone?

Vera: No, with school and work…I told her to get out of that line of work, but she said the money was too good to walk away from. Did you check out where she worked? Was there any problems there?

Baldwin: No problems at work. We checked it out.

Vera: I don’t know what to tell you. Lance has his own business…. Contractor, I think. I might have a card (She looks through her purse) Here it is. It’s an old one. Nancy gave it to me when we had to have some work done on our house. I called him and his crew the Three Stooges.

Rita: Thanks Ms. Gilham, this should be real helpful. Thanks again for coming in and we are sorry for your loss.

Vera: Thanks. (Getting up to leave) Oh, if you need to reach me here is my cell phone number. Detectives, thank you for all you are doing.

Rita: I’ll fill in the boss.

Baldwin: I’ll give Lance Alldean a call.

Greg: I’ll run him through BCI.

Rita fills in Lieu.

Lieu: Bookie, huh? I don’t like the sounds of that. Check all his bank records, insurance policies and credit cards.

Greg: Excuse me boss, I ran the name of the bookie the sister gave us. Got a hit on Jimmy Black.

Lieu: See if he can come in and talk to us as a favor.

Greg: Right.

John: Det. Medavoy?

Greg: Yes John?

John: I have a Mrs. Mary Jorden on line 3. She says you left your card in her door this morning.

Greg: Thanks John.

Baldwin: I’m waiting to hear from Lance…I left a message for him to call me back.

Greg: I have to go and see Mrs. Jorden. I’ll be back in a bit. I got ahold of Jimmy Black. He said he’d be in sometime this morning.

When Greg arrives at Mrs. Jorden’s apartment he knocks and identifies himself. It takes her a few minutes to answer the door due to her arthritis.

Mrs.J.: I’m sorry I didn’t answer the door this morning. It takes me a while to get up and moving.

Greg: No problem.

Mrs.J.: I saw all the activity going on this morning and thought I should call as soon as I could.

Greg: Thank you for callin’ back.

They make their way to her bedroom.

Mrs.J.: I have very bad arthritis and some nights I just can’t sleep due to the pain. Last night at 3am I was up taking my medicine when I looked out my bedroom window and saw a man carrying something very heavy up that fire escape. He went in the window and a few minutes later he came out and put something in that dumpster.

Greg: Could you give me a description of the man you saw?

Mrs.J.: No, I’m sorry. It was dark to see his face. Don’t even know if he’s black or white. (Pause) I was able to see his clothes though.

Greg: Good.

Mrs.J.: He had on work boots and jeans and an Army jacket. Oh, and a baseball hat. Imagine that…an Army jacket on a night like last night…it was hot last night.

Greg: Did you happen to notice what sort of vehicle he had?

Mrs.J.: No, he went around the corner. I did hear a car door close. It sounded heavy.

Greg: Sorry?

Mrs.J.: Almost like a truck, definitely not a car door sound. I’m sorry I couldn’t be more of a help.

Greg: You did great Mrs. Jorden. This will help our investigation in a big way. Can I help you with any thing before I go?

Mrs.J.: Oh, no thank you son. It’s almost time for my stories. I’ll get myself a snack and take the rest of the day off.

Greg: Sounds like a plan. Have a good day and thanks for calling. This’ll be a big help.

Part 2

Andy walks his witness to the top of the stairs and thanks him for coming in. Jr. is right behind him and he does the same with his witness.

Andy: Anything?

Jr.: Description of the car and a plate number. You?

Andy: Same thing.

Connie joins them at their desk.

Andy: How’d you make out?

Connie: My guy says he might remember one of them from high school. Never knew his name, just remembers seeing him around. It was the haircut he remembers.

Jr.: What? The mullet?

Connie: Yeah. I can’t believe guys are still wearing that style cut.

Jr.: No way. That’s coming back.

Connie: Yep, you know you should try and grow one. You’d look good (with a smart-ass grin on her face).

Jr.: No way, I take too long with my hair as it is.

Andy clears his throat as an obvious sign of annoyance.

Connie: So, anyway, I’m gonna take this guy up to Anti-Crime and have him look at some mug shots.

Jr.: What a break.

Andy: Take them as they come.

When Greg gets back to the squad he finds Baldwin and Rita talking with T-Rod. Joins them in the office.

Lieu: Greg, what did you find out?

Greg fills them in.

Greg: Hear from Jimmy yet?

Baldwin: Yeah, he just left. Lance is into him 7 large.

Greg: Wow, that quite a note to be carryin’.

Rita: His alibi is solid. He was in Atlantic City with about six guys. Video surveillance has him playing Black Jack all afternoon. Last night he was picked up in a pross sweep. Got out this morning at nine.

Baldwin: Lance should be in shortly.

Greg: Any word from Crime Scene?

Lieu: They recovered the rug you told them about. They took it to the lab to have it looked at.

Rita: Lance Alldean did have a policy on his wife when they were married. I’m waiting to hear if he let it lapse or kept up the payments on it.

Lieu: What about the two guys he works with?

Baldwin: BCI was down when I called…they took my information and said they’d get back to me.

Lieu: Okay, keep digging and let me know what you find.

As Connie is walking her witness to Anti-Crime, a tall, thin black man wearing a hooded jacket meets her at the top of the stairs.

Leslie: Excuse me….but does an old fat nasty cop still work here?

Resisting the temptation to smile, she points him to the squad.

John: May I help you?

Leslie: Yeah, I need to speak to smarty clown over there (pointing to Andy).

Andy looks over at Leslie and tries to remember where he knows him from.

Andy: Who the hell are you?

Leslie: I am a friend of the late Danny. God rest his soul. He used to work here.

It hits Andy. This is the guy who helped Danny find his CI/friend JB.

Andy: Whadda ya want?

Leslie: I may have some information for you. Guy downstairs said to come up here.

Andy opens the gate to the catching area and nods for Leslie to come into the squad.

Andy: As I remember, you enjoyed our coffee room.

Leslie: As you remember correctly.

They head off to the coffee room.

Greg: Hey Baldwin, Lance Alldean comes up clean with BCI. Richard Jefferson has two collars for burglary. Michael Royce has one for drunk and disorderly.

Baldwin: Okay, Lance should be here within the hour. When he gets here, I’ll keep him busy while you and Rita go talk to Jefferson and Royce.

Rita: Phone dumps are back. A whole lot of calls to a Tracy Bishop, over on Wells Street.

Baldwin: Could be the girlfriend. Might be worth a conversation.

Rita: I’ll give her a call…see what’s what.

Leslie is getting himself a cup of coffee. Andy waits and watches as Leslie dumps about ten packs of sugar into his coffee.

Andy: Why don’t you have a little coffee with your sugar?

Leslie: Glad to see you’re still as jolly as ever.

Andy: All right asshole. What do you have?

Leslie: I hear on the street you been looking for some guys stealin’ cars with women in them. Now, if I give you a name and it all works out, will there be a monetary reward involved?

Andy: I’ll have to check with the 3C’s.

The three C’s is the Citizen Crime Commission

Leslie: Is that some sort of paternal organization?

Andy: (Closing his eyes and rubbing his head) Yeah, something like that.

Jr. knocks at the door, pokes his head in and nods for Andy to join him outside the coffee room.

Andy: What’s up?

Jr.: Patrol car just radioed in. They found the car on Baker Street. Connie and I are gonna meet Crime Scene over there.

Andy: They see anyone hangin’ round the car?

Jr.: Nope. Just parked on the block. How you making out with this guy?

Andy: We’re getting’ somewhere. Where, I don’t know.

Connie: Ready? (She gives Andy a wink)

Jr.: Yeah, I’m driving though.

Connie: No you’re not.

Andy follows and listens to Connie and Jr. with a rather perplexed look on his face.

Jr.: Yes I am.

Connie: No you’re not. I have the keys…ha ha ha.

Jr.: Ah, bite me.

Connie: Pshh, you wish.

Rita meets Tracy Bishop in the catching area.

Rita: Thanks for coming in.

Tracy: I only have a few minutes. Lance doesn’t like it when I’m late.

Rita: Lance have a short fuse?

Tracy: Not so much with me any more…but with the guys, yeah, He yells a lot.

Rita: When you say any more, did he used to get mad at you a lot?

Tracy: I understood. I was new at the job and he was going through a rough time with his divorce and all.

Rita: Do you and Lance socialize outside of work?

Tracy: Is that a polite way of asking if we’re sleeping together?

Rita: Are you?

Tracy: (Looking ashamed) Yes.

Rita: How long?

Tracy: About a year now, may be longer.

Rita: Were you with Lance on Wednesday night?

Tracy: He came over around 7 o’clock. We ate and watched the game, as usual. I went to bed around 9. He came to bed about 10 or 10:30.

Rita: Did he stay the whole night?

Tracy: What’s up with all these personal questions? Did Lance do something?

Rita: That’s what we’re trying to find out. Now, did he stay the whole night?

Tracy: No, he left my place around 2 or 2:30.

Rita: Which is it Tracy? 2 or 2:30?

Tracy: Closer to 2:30. Is he in trouble with the gambling again? Because if he is, I am not bailing his ass out of another jam. Look I have to go or he’ll blow a gasket. Any thing else?

Rita: No I think that should do it. Thanks for coming in.

Rita fills in Greg and Baldwin about Tracy Bishop.

Andy returns to Leslie.

Andy: Okay Leslie, now that you stuffed your pockets and calmed your jones down with a pound of sugar, tell me what you know.

Leslie: There’s an auto repair shop over in Alphabet City by the name of Robbins and Son an…

Andy: Where in Alphabet City?

Leslie: Not sure…I thought you might let your fingers do the walkin’…so like I was sayin’ the father is legit but the son, now that’s another story.

Andy: What’s the son’s name?

Leslie: Ummm…. Carl. He has a little garage out back of daddy’s shop where he breaks down stolen cars and then resells the parts on the street.

Andy: A chop shop.

Leslie: Yeah, whatever…Carl’s got these two coked up freaks bringin’ him the cars.

Andy: Sit tight for a minute. I got to go see my boss. Don’t be fillin’ your pockets with any more food…leave some for the people who actually work here.

Leslie: All right.

Andy relays the information he received from Leslie to T-Rod.

Lieu: Good…. I’ll call Central-K and tell the uniforms to back off. You radio Connie and Jr., give them a heads up. And tell them we’re sending Josh and Hank for back up. If they see these guys…grab them up.

Andy: What about the chop shop?

Lieu: I’ll call ADA Haywood for a warrant then send uniform to sit on it.

They each make their phone calls and meet back in Lieu’s office.

Lieu: Is Leslie registered?

Andy: Doubt it.

Lieu: Well if 3C’s is gonna pay, he has to register. Sign him up and get his statement on paper.

Andy goes back to talk to Leslie and finds him taking a catnap on the table.

Andy: Ain’t this charming. Leslie wake up!!

Leslie: Right, right. Sorry bout that, long night ya know.

Andy: Whatever… we got to get you signed up to be a CI in order for 3C’s to pay you. I need your statement on paper. Write down everythin’ you just told me.

Leslie: Now see this, this is why I don’t work in an office…paperwork, paperwork, paperwork.

Andy: Yeah.

Lieu: Greg. The ME called. He puts the time of death between 3 and 5pm Wednesday.

Rita: That would be the time she is getting out of class.

Greg: We should get down to NYU and see if anyone remembers seein’ anythin’ suspicious. First lets go talk to Jefferson and Royce. Alldean should be on his way here by now.

Baldwin: Keep me posted as to how you make out.

Greg: Let me use the mens room and we’ll get goin’.

Andy and Leslie finish up their work.

Andy: Pleasure doin’ business with you.

Leslie: Yeah right, have your people call my people…we’ll do lunch.

Baldwin snickers at Leslie’s comment. Andy shakes his head. A man enters the catching area and introduces himself as Lance Alldean.

John: Please have a seat, Det. Jones will be right with you.

John goes to the coffee room to find Baldwin.

John: Det. Jones, a Mr. Alldean is here to see you.

Baldwin: Thanks John, I’ll be right there. Hey John, do you know what happened to all the doughnuts that were here?

John: No I don’t. This is the first I’ve been in here today.

Baldwin: I gotta talk to Greg about hoggin’ all the food.

Baldwin walks to the catching area and introduces himself. He invites Lance Alldean to join him at his desk.

Lance: I’m a little confused as to how my name would come up in an investigation.

Baldwin: Mr. Alldean, are you married to Nancy Alldean?

Lance: No we’ve been divorced for 18 months now. Ungrateful witch. Walked out on me. Next thing I know, she’s filing for divorce.

Baldwin: (Trying no to show his emotions) Have you had any contact with her recently?

Lance: No last time I saw her was when we signed the divorce papers. What’s all this with Nancy anyway? Is she in trouble? Is she under arrest?

Baldwin: (Looking for a reaction) No Mr. Alldean, she’s dead.

Lance: What? You just drop that on me. (Pause) What? You think I did it? You’re nuts.

Baldwin: Spouse is always questioned first.

Lance: You could have been a bit more delicate about it.

Baldwin: (Not really meaning it) Sorry. I have to ask you some questions and I need you to be truthful with me.

Lance: Okay.

Baldwin: Where were you yesterday between 3 and 5 pm?

Lance: Ah, doing a job on Howellston Street.

Baldwin: Anyone with you?

Lance: Yeah, two guys were with me yesterday…and the homeowner. She’ll tell you I was there.

Baldwin: (Handing him a pen and some paper) Names and phone numbers.

Lance: Sure.

Baldwin: You and your ex-wife ever fight while you were together?

Lance: We’d yell a lot…never anything physical

Baldwin: What about?

Lance: You know, laundry, housework, money…typical stuff.

Baldwin: Ever run around on your ex-wife?

Lance: (Looking down at the floor) No. Never. No way. Her on the other hand…who knows? Makes you wonder though.

Baldwin: How’s that?

Lance: One day we’re happily married and the next she’s walkin’ out on me. Women? Who can figure them out?

Baldwin: (To himself) lyin’ prick. Ok I’ll check this out and get back to you. Stay reachable and thanks for comin’ in.

Lance: Sure. No problem.

Baldwin walks him to the stairs then returns to the squad.

Andy: How’d it go?

Baldwin: Guy’s got a stink comin’ off him.

John: Det. Jones? Det. Medavoy on line one.

Baldwin: Yeah Greg?

Greg: We got Jefferson and Royce coming in with uniform…they should be there in a few minutes.

Baldwin: Good, Alldean just left.

Greg: Ok, we’re goin’ over to NYU now. We’ll be in touch.

Baldwin: Thanks Greg. Hey Andy, could you give me a hand with these two guys that are coming in?

Andy: Yeah. No problem. You’ll have to bring me up to speed with what’s goin’ on.

Baldwin fills Andy in on the case. They agree to interview the suspects together. Office Shannon arrives with Jefferson and Royce. They go to interview room two.

Andy: How long the two of you been workin’ for Alldean?

Jefferson: I been with him for five or six years.

Royce: Three or four for me.

Baldwin: So you know him pretty well?

Jefferson: Yeah, I guess.

Andy: Well enough to lie for him?

Royce: What? Is he in trouble again? Is this about his gambling? Cause I’m tellin’ you I’m tired of not getting’ paid cause he has to meet his vig.

Jefferson: Somethin’ tells me this isn’t about gambling.

Baldwin: Your something is right. It’s about murder. And if the two of you don’t want to be charged as an accessory after the fact…you had better tell the truth.

Royce: Murder? (Standing up) What? Are you nuts?

Andy: Sit down and shut up. We’ll ask the questions.

Baldwin: Where were you on Wednesday?

Jefferson: We were on a job over on Howellston Street.

Andy: All day?

Royce: All day.

Andy: Was Alldean with the two of you all day?

Jefferson and Royce look at each other.

Jefferson: No. Lance left the site at about 2 o’clock. Said he had some errands to run. I remember because he took the truck and most of the tools. So we ended up standing around most of the day.

Baldwin: What time did he get back?

Royce: About 5, maybe a little later. When he did get back, it was too late to do any more work. We went to put the tools we had back in the truck and he said just let it go he would take care of it.

Andy: Is that unusual for him to do that?

Jefferson: Lookin’ back on it, yeah it was. I was just so pissed he wasted our time. So, I left everything where it was and went home.

Royce: I started to help him, but he insisted I go home. So I did. You ain’t got to tell me twice.

Baldwin: So neither one of you saw the inside of the truck?

Both shake their heads no.

Baldwin: I’m going to need you both to write down everything you just told us.

Andy slides them both a pad of paper and pens. They are released after they give their statements. They are asked not to tell Alldean that the police have spoken to them.

Baldwin: Thanks for the hand Andy.

Andy: Anytime.

Andy heads to T-Rods office to see if he has heard from Connie and Jr..

12:00pm

Baker Street

Jr.: God it’s hot today. Good thing for Theo though, being out of the city away from this heat.

Connie: Yeah, (Looking at her watch) they should be swimming by now. Lucky kids.

Jr.: When’s he get back?

Connie: Sunday around diner time.

Jr.: You and Andy have plans for the weekend?

Connie: No, not really. How bout you? Anything going on?

Jr.: Ah, I’ve been meaning to talk to you about something.

Connie: What’s up?

Jr.: Connie, I may be putting in for a leave of absence. I feel like all I do is go through the motions. I don’t feel like I’m doing anyone any good.

Connie: You’re kidding?

Jr.: I’ve been seeing a shrink down in Philly.

Connie: Why all the way down there?

Jr.: I have an aunt and uncle down there, they’re from my dads’ side of the family. They’re all I have left. So every other weekend I go and see them and see the shrink. He thinks I need some time to come to grips with my dad’s death. On top of which, since I was born I was “trained” to be a cop. I just don’t know if it’s what I want/should be doing. He suggested it and I’m considering it.

Connie: Maybe you take the time off and see how things feel. But quitting all together?

Jr.: I have this…this fear of never being satisfied. I can’t seem to find stable…I don’t know…happiness I guess. Believe me, I’ve tried. (Pause) I’m learning to let go. It’s the most painful lesson I’ve ever had to learn. Welcome to my world of self-wallow.

Connie: A short time can change so much.

She knows of what she speaks. In the flash of an eye she went from a single woman, living on her own with no responsibilities. Now she has a baby to keep care of, the man she loves and his son all under her roof. She can also sympathize with what Jr. is telling her. She fully understands the parent/child relationship when it comes to the job. That was one of the reasons she left Saratoga Springs. If she was going to be a cop it wasn’t going to happen around her father. It was a sort of bond her and Jr. shared.

Connie: You have to do what’s good for you; or you’re no good for anybody. Personally, I think you may have come back too soon.

Insight is the celebration of much-needed, heaven-sent friendship.

Jr.: Yeah, you’re right. I thought I was doing the right thing at the time. You know, bury yourself in work rather than deal with what you have on your plate. So what I was thinking is maybe you could kinda prepare Andy for this? I know he doesn’t deal well with change.

Connie: (Sarcastically) What makes you say that?

They both snicker at that comment.

Jr.: If I do it, it’ll be in about two weeks.

Connie: No problem…I’ll start laying the ground work this weekend.

Jr.: I appreciate that….well, well, well would you look what we have here? Mr. Mullet.

Connie: And Mr. Dragon.

Jr.: Let’s go.

Connie: No wait…let them get in the car first.

They sit and wait for the suspects to get in the car.

Connie: 15th squad to Anti-Crime one?

Hank: Go ahead 15th squad.

Connie: Suspects approaching vehicle…be advised, let suspects enter vehicle before apprehending.

Hank: Roger that 15th squad.

As the suspects get into the car, Jr. and Connie exit their car and walk slowly to the suspects. Jr. is ahead of Connie. Hank and Josh are on the corner and get the go sign from Jr.. Connie has her hand on her gun. The suspects see Hank and Josh and make them for cops. The driver pulls out a gun and fires at Hank and Josh. Hank and Josh return fire. Jr. is distracted by the driver and doesn’t see that the passenger has started to exit the car with a gun. Jr. is fumbling for his gun. The passenger points his gun in the direction of Jr. and Connie and rips off three rounds. Connie pushes Jr. to the ground and hit the passenger 3 times squarely in the chest.

Andy: C’mon what’s takin’ so long?

Lieu: Andy, relax.

Andy: Pshh…right.

Connie has a direct line on the driver.

Connie: FREEZ ASS HOLE!

Driver: FUCK YOU, BITCH!

Connie: Drop it…or you’ll end up like your friend here on the ground.

The driver takes a quick look around and knows it over. He puts the gun ontop of the car and steps back with his hands in the air. Hank frisks him and cuffs him.

Jr.: Everyone ok?

Connie: I’m good.

Hank: Yeah, good.

Josh: Fine.

Jr. looks over at Josh and sees a stream of blood falling down his arm.

Jr.: Josh, you been shot!

Josh: What? Where?

Hank: Look at your arm…its bleedin’… Anti-Crime one to Central-K…We need a bus forthwith to Backer and Knorr…Officer wounded…another bus for suspect also wounded….

Andy grabs the radio.

Andy: Central-K to Anti-Crime one…who’s hit?

-Nothing-

Andy: I repeat…who’s been shot??

-Nothing-

John: Det. Sipowicz? (Pause) Det. Sipow

Andy: WHAT??

John: Det. Clark on line 2.

Lieu: Put him on speaker.

Andy: Jr. what the hell happened? Who got shot?

Jr.: Everyone is fine…Josh was hit in the arm…flesh wound…looks worse than it is.

Andy: Where’s Connie? She okay?

Jr.: She’s with Hank and Josh. She’s fine. She shot one of the preps, doesn’t look like he’s gonna make it. We got the other prep in custody, name is Anthony Downs. Ask Lieu of he wants me to bring him in?

Lieu: No, you stay there. I’m on my way. (hanging up)

Andy: I’ll go with you.

Lieu: No Andy you stay here. I’ll have uniform bring in this Downs guy. I want you to run him through BCI, see what else we can get on him. Then call the victims and see if they are available for coming in to view a line up. I should be back by then.

Andy: Lieu?

Lieu: What Andy? I got to get to the scene…what?

Andy: I think I should be with Connie right now is all.

Lieu: If it had been Greg or Baldwin, would you be asking me the same question…I don’t think so.

Andy has no answer for that. He looks away from T-Rod and shakes his head.

Lieu: (Speaking very softly to Andy as a friend) This is why they don’t like detectives cohabiting. She is a detective in the New York City Police department. She takes the same risk and chances that you or Jr. or any other cop takes when she hits the streets. Do not disrespect her this way. She’s a big girl. She knows what she has to do now. Look, I will personally take her to Psych Services myself and wait for her. Now, you got work to do so get movin’. I’ll be in touch. (Walking out of the squad room) John, I’m on the air if you need to reach me.

Andy returns to his desk. You could say he was suffering a bit of Déjà Vu. A woman he loves being around gunfire. This only served to upset his equilibrium. He fought it off by concentrating on his orders from T-Rod. He did exactly as he was asked to do. There was a bit of hesitation on calling the last victim. He thought about asking John to call Bellevue to check on Cynthia’s condition. He decided to call for himself.

Andy: Yeah, this is Det. Sipowicz from the 15th squad. I’m callin’ to check on the status of a patshunt who was brought in this morning…a Cynthia Bunin. (pause)

She’s been released? When? Ok, I’ll call her at home. Thanks.

John: Det. Jones?

Baldwin: Yeah, John?

John: Det. Medavoy on line one.

Baldwin: Thanks John….yeah Greg?

Baldwin listens as Greg relays what he and Rita found on the canvas of NYU. They spoke to a hot dog vender who remembers seeing Nancy Alldean around 2:30 on Wednesday afternoon. She was standing on the corner waiting for a bus when a white work truck pulled up. There was a bit of conversation. The vender turned to give a customer change and when he looked again, she was gone and so was the truck. He remembered part of the license plate number because it was similar to the Daily number he plays. Armed with this information, Baldwin went to work.

Andy was getting ready to go down stairs to get fillers for the line up when he sees Eddie Gibson coming up the stairs.

Andy: Oh no, not now.

Eddie: Andy, just the man I wanted to see.

Andy: What Gibson? Shouldn’t you be home with your niece or something’?

Eddie: I brought Cynthia with me. I thought she should look through some mug shots while the image is still fresh in her mind.

Andy: Gibson you are a piece of work. I can’t believe you brought her down there in that condition.

Eddie: What, all the sudden you’re a doctor? She’s fine.

Andy: Did it ever cross your mind she may need help getting’ up the stairs you strap job?

Eddie: Nice Andy, real nice. And besides, she’s not alone, James is with her.

James Kilik is the young boy Eddie took in after the courts decided that his mother was unfit to raise him.

Andy: Did you bother to bring the rest of the family?

Eddie: He wanted to see Jr..

Andy: Whatever.

Andy starts down the stairs when he runs into Cynthia, James and ADA Haywood.

Val: Detective, has your suspect arrived yet?

Andy: No, they’re on the way.

Cynthia: Hi Andy.

Andy: Howzit goin’?

Cynthia: Okay. Uncle Eddie thought I should look at some mug shots, but ADA Haywood tells me you may have someone?

Andy: Yeah, we’re waitin’ for him now. (To Val) Why don’t you get settled in the coffee room. I’ll be up in a minute.

Val: Sounds good.

James: Hey detective.

Andy: Hey James, how you doin’?

James: Good. Is Detective Clark around?

Andy: He’s out right now…why don’t you go up to the coffee room for now and when he gets in I’ll tell him you’re here.

James: Thanks.

Andy heads over to see the Desk Sargent.

Sgt: Yes, detective?

Andy: I need fillers for a line up. Do you have any one in the tombs that looks like this mope? (Handing him Downs mug shot)

Sgt.: Not sure, ask Baxter, he might know.

Andy: One other thing, I have three car jacking victims coming in to look at line-ups. Could you keep them separated down here till we’re ready for them up stairs? I don’t want them comparing notes or anything.

Sgt.: Right…. So Gibson’s niece, huh?

Andy: (A bit miffed) What, is my personal life the main topic of gossip around here?

Sgt.: I was just sayin’….but since you brought it up…?

Andy (Embarrassed he walks away) Thanks for all your help Sgt.

Baldwin and Andy meet at the catching area.

Andy: Where you headin’?

Baldwin: I have to go pick up a warrant then I’m going to meet Greg and Rita.

Andy: What’d you come up with?

Baldwin: I got a hit from a partial plate number…white truck registered to Lance Alldean. Val is getting’ us a warrant to search the truck. Alldean and his crew are workin’ on a job over on Howellston Street.

Andy: I’ll fill in the boss when he gets in.

Baldwin: Thanks Andy.

Andy: (To John) Any word from the boss?

John: Yes, he called while you were down stairs and said you should give him a call back.

Andy: Call or radio?

John: He said call.

Andy returns to his desk and places a call to T-Rod.

Andy: Lieu, what’s up?

Lieu: Connie and I are at Psych Services, we should be here for about an hour. How are things there?

Andy fills him in.

Andy: Ah, she ok?

Lieu: She seems good.

Andy: All right.

Lieu: Jr. back yet?

Andy: Not yet.

Lieu: You okay?

Andy: Yeah, good. Concerned is all.

Lieu: Ok, I’ll see you in a bit.

Andy hangs up the phone and goes to the locker room. He got out of bed this morning on two strong legs. Right now, they feel anything but. He wanted to see Connie. He knew she was physically fine…it was the mental part that worried him. He was going to have to walk a very tight and delicate line when taking care of her. He would like to comfort her, but he also knew he would have to stand down and let her handle it her way. He has too much respect for her. He goes to the sink, runs the cold water and splashes his face. He dries off and then returns to the squad room. He sees ADA Haywood on the phone in Lieu’s office. Andy goes over to feed his fish.

2:00pm

15th Squad Room

Cynthia comes out of the coffee room and sees Andy feeding his fish.

Cynthia: That’s a nice tank you got there Andy.

Andy: Yeah, thanks. Where’s the rest of the gang?

Cynthia: Uncle Eddie is giving James the grand tour. Any idea how much longer I’ll be here?

Andy: Jr. should be here soon. You should really be in the coffee room.

Cynthia: I was a little bored sitting in there by myself.

He dreaded the thought of doing it, but he did it anyway.

Andy: C’mon. I’ll sit with you for a bit.

Cynthia: Thanks Andy. I appreciate that.

He gets each of them a soda and takes a seat across from Cynthia. There is a bit of tension in the air.

Cynthia: So, how are things with you?

Andy: Good. (To himself) that went well.

Cynthia: How’s Theo?

Andy: Good. (pause) He left for soccer camp this morning. He’ll be gone for four days.

Cynthia: First time away from home?

Andy: Yeah.

Cynthia: So, you’ll be back to being a bachelor dad?

He realizes she has no idea about Connie. But then again why would she.

Andy: No, not really.

Cynthia: You and Katie still together then?

Another can of worms he’d rather not open.

Andy: Ah, no. (Clearing his throat) You were right about that. About Katie and I getting’ married. It was for all the wrong reasons. Actually Katie realized it before I did. After she left, I thought about what you said…That it was a mistake to marry her for Theo's sake. Because if it’s not good for me then it wouldn’t be good for Theo. (He gets up and looks out the window) Cynthia, I was grateful for the comfort and thankful for your kindness. I’m sorry for havin’ hurt you.

It was a simple thing to realize, yet so hard to say. Asking forgiveness is brutal. She joins him at the window and looks deep into his eyes. She knows that he is being genuine. He wasn’t being cruel, just truthful. The past with which they have to deal with is something they cannot erase.

Cynthia: I don’t know if I can let you off so easily. I’m working up the nerve to tell you off. Actually, I’ve been working on it for quite a while now.

He knew in his heart of hearts someday this would happen.

Cynthia: I don’t like the phrase “what might have been”…it lacks impact. (Looking him deep in the eyes) Were you playing with my emotions so I’d fall in love with you? Cause you know, I could fall in love with a guy like you. Even though we only dated for a short time, you woke something up in me. Was it the same for you?

Andy: It was Cynthia. And for that I am grateful.

Cynthia: Was it then you realized I wasn’t what you wanted?

Andy: Cynthia….no…I don’t know. It was a very hard time for me at that point. I had lost two very dear people in my life and I was trying to hold on to Theo with all I had.

Andy returns to the table and sits down. She sits across from him.

Cynthia: Ever wanted something so bad that when you got it you didn’t know what to do, or feel or react? I just don’t know when to let go. I’m way too sensitive and it gets on everyone’s nerves. I guess its because I’ve always felt invisible. And here you were, in my life, someone so grounded like you finds someone so mixed up like me, what are the chances?

Andy: Cynthia…

Cynthia: I’m getting on your nerves now, aren’t I?

Andy: No you’re not.

He’s looking down at the floor. She takes a sip of her soda. She isn’t going to say another word till he looks her in the eye. He can feel her watching him. He lets out a large sigh and looks at her.

Cynthia: You’re a good guy, Andy. I just hope whoever you are with or who ever you find down the line realizes that. That it wasn’t me is something less important then you finding that one to your liking. I only hope that while you were adding to my life, I haven’t interrupted anything within yours.

He felt self-conscious and shy. He is a quivering mass of humility. There’s a knock at the door, for which he was eternally grateful.

Connie: (Looking at Andy) Hey. (Then seeing Cynthia) Hi Cynthia. How are you?

Andy stands up immediately. His eyes are shifting back and forth between the two women.

Cynthia: Good, thanks.

Connie: I'm suprised to see you.

Cynthia: The doctors said I could go home. Uncle Eddie wanted me to come in and look at some mug shots.

Andy: (Clearing his throat) Ah, is, ah, Jr. here yet?

Connie: (Looking at Andy wondering what’s up) Yeah, he was right behind me.

Andy: I’ll go see him then.

Connie: Excuse me Cynthia.

Andy and Connie are right outside the coffee room door where Cynthia can see the interaction between the two of them.

Connie: You okay? You look pale.

Andy: Yeah, fine…worried about you is all. How are you? How was it over at Psych Services? How’s..

Connie: Andy, slow down. (She tries to look in his eyes) Are you sure you’re okay? (Joking) I’m the one who should be on edge, you know?

Andy: (Rubbing his head trying to avoid her eyes) Yeah, like I said I was worried is all.

Connie: I’m fine.

Andy: (Looking for a way out) Good. Fine. Let me go find Jr. so we can get this line up goin’ and get you home.

Connie: (Smiling, reaching for his hand) I’m good. I’m not going anywhere, except home with you.

Andy: Good.

Jr.: Andy, ready?

Andy: (Squeezing her hand) Gotta go. (To Jr.) Did we get enough fillers?

Jr.: Yeah, we got some from the VA hospital and some from the cells.

Connie: I’ll bring up the first victim.

Andy: Good. Thanks.

Eddie: Andy?

Andy: (Closing his eyes, trying to remain calm) Mary Mother of God….what did I do to deserve him bein’ here all day?

Connie: Andy, behave yourself.

Jr.: I’ll see you in the observation room.

Andy: Yeah, thanks. You’re a big help.

Eddie: Andy? I hear you have somebody?

Andy: Possibly. We’re gonna run a line up.

Eddie: Let me go tell Cynthia.

Andy: Gibson…wait. Who did you hear from?

Eddie: Down stairs..why?

Andy: Know what? I want you to go sit at my desk till Cynthia is done.

Eddie: Andy, please, I want to help her through this.

Andy: Gibson, I don’t need you queerin’ this line up off some hear say. So please, go sit at my desk till we’re done.

Eddie: I want to be there for support for Cynthia.

Andy: She’ll get all the support she needs. Now go.

The first three women pick Anthony Downs out without any hesitation. Jr. brings Cynthia into the observation room.

Jr.: You are aware that they cannot see you?

Cynthia: Yes I know.

Jr.: We need you to take your time…look at each person and if you see the person responsible for the car jacking…tell us what number. You okay with that?

Cynthia: Easier said than done.

Connie: There’s nothing to be afraid of…they can’t see or hear you.

Cynthia: Did the other women pick the right guys? Cause you know…I …don’t …I

Andy walks over to Cynthia. He stands right beside her.

Andy: ( Speaking softly) I’m right here…we’ll get through this together.

Cynthia: Andy…

He takes her hand and holds it tightly.

Andy: You can do this.

She bites her bottom lip, looks at Andy and nods her head yes. Jr. lifts up the shade. When Cynthia sees Anthony Downs she squeezes his hand. He squeezes back for reassurance. Connie is standing behind the two of them. Andy throws a glance over his shoulder at her. She offers him a soft smile.

Val: Do you recognize anyone?

Cynthia: Yes, number 2.

Val: Where do you recognize him from?

Cynthia: He is the one who car jacked me this morning. He was the driver.

Jr.: (Speaking into the intercom) Kick everyone but number 2.

Val: Okay, Ms. Bunin. Thank you.

Cynthia: Where’s the other one? Haven’t you caught him? The one in the back seat?

Andy: C’mon, we’ll talk in the coffee room.

Cynthia, Val, and Jr. walk out together. Andy and Connie are alone in the observation room.

Connie: I’ll help her with the paper work. You and Jr. see if you can get this ass

hole to confess. I’d rather not be in the room with him right now. You are a good man Andy Sipowicz.

He looks away with ½ a smile on his face. He wonders if she would still feel and still say the same thing if she knew about the past he and Cynthia shared. Connie takes his hand in hers, gives it a kiss and walks out of the room.

Andy: (To himself) I guess that answers that.

As Andy makes his way to the squad room, he hears someone yelling.

Lance: This is police brutality! I want a lawyer! I want a lawyer!

Andy stands at the top of the stairs and sees Baldwin, Greg and Rita carrying Lance Alldean up the stairs.

Baldwin: (In a calm voice to Andy) What’s open?

Andy: ( Looking down the hall over his shoulder) Interview two.

Baldwin: Thanks.

They very calmly continue to carry Alldean down the hall, all the while Alldean is screaming.

3:00pm

15th Squad room

Jr: (To Andy) Ready?

Andy: Yeah…we really have to get this prick to confess…I don’t think these women need the hassle of a trial.

On the way to the pokey they discuss how they will go at Downs. Hank is in the room with Anthony Downs. Andy storms in, grabs Downs by the collar and pins him to the cage.

Andy: This the prick who pulled a gun on you two this afternoon?

Hank: Yep.

Jr.: He’s the one.

Andy: Where’s your balls now?

Downs: I was in fear for my life!!

Andy: Right, just like when you kidnapped and molested those women. Mr. No Balls here.

Downs: I don’t know what you’re talkin’ about!!

Jr.: Andy. Andy, let him go.

Andy: What? You kiddin’ me?

Jr.: No, really.

Andy shoves Downs into the chair but looms over him. Downs won’t take his eyes off Andy.

Jr.: Anthony…Anthony, yo… over here.

Downs: (Pointing to Andy) Tell him to back off.

Andy: (Right in Downs face) Say please.

Downs: What?…ok, ok …Please back off?

Andy gets out of Downs face and takes a step back, but continues to stand next to him.

Jr.: Anthony…Anthony look at me. That’s better. I’m gonna tell you, it doesn’t look good for you.

Downs: (Looking out of the corner of his eye at Andy) What’s that?

Andy: (Right back in his face) Your future, ass hole.

Jr.: Andy, I’m talkin to Anthony here. Like I was sayin’…it really doesn’t look good for you. You’ve been ID by four women. All four said you kidnapped them.

All four said you molested them, and all four said you stole their cars.

Downs: They’re lying.

Andy takes a step in the direction of Downs…Jr. puts up his hand to stop him.

Jr.: Anthony, think about it. All four women picked you out. I’ll tell you what, you work with me, and I’ll talk to the DA.

Downs: No way…you’re fulla shit.

Andy: I wouldn't talk that way to a man who’s willin’ to forgive and forget.

Jr.: Lookit, your runnin’ buddy is dead. You can lay it all on him. Besides if you have something to bring to the table… you know the DA always loves that.

Downs takes a second to think about what Jr. has just said. He looks at Andy seething beside him. He looks back at Jr. who has the puppy dog eyes going on.

Downs: All right, all right (pointing to Andy) but he has to go.

Andy: (In his face again) I ain’t goin’ anywhere.

Jr.: I’ll tell you what? Andy? Andy, you come over here (Jr. slides a chair over by the door) Andy, you sit here. (Looking at Downs) That better?

Downs: Yeah, I guess.

Andy sits with his arms folded across his chest glaring at Downs.

Jr.: Ok, everybody happy now? (Looking back to Downs) Right, you and me…we got work to do.

Half an hour later, Jr. has a full written confession from Anthony Downs.

Jr.: (Looking over Downs confession) Good work Anthony. I’ll take this to the DA…someone should be in to see you after they see this.

Jr. opens the door to the cage. He turns and offers his hand to Downs for a shake. Downs shakes his hand. Jr. squeezes so hard, Downs falls to his knees.

Jr.: (In Downs face) And the next time you pull a gun on me…you had better be prepared to use it. We understand each other?

Andy looks on with a surprised look on his face and nods in agreement. Jr. picks up Downs and throws him into the cage. Jr. and Andy start to leave the room.

Jr.: Next time, I get to break bad. You always get to do it.

Andy: (Thinking for a second) Okay, you get next.

Downs: (Yelling and banging on the cage) You pricks! You’re gonna fuck me over!

Andy: (Turning to look at Downs) Not nearly as bad as your cell mate will.
