Chapter 4  (go to the new part )

Won't Ya Marry Me Bill (Brochtrup)???

As he walked out of the church, the late afternoon sun played havoc with his eyes. With tears fresh in his eyes, he felt as if he were looking through a kaleidoscope. Broken images everywhere he looked. After he got into the car, he took a min. to let his eyes adjust to the light. The sun did feel good and comforting. He looked through the glove compartment for some eye drops.

Andy: Don't feel like playing 20 questions about this. Gum, tissues, what's this.......looks like one of those woman things..........come on.........gotta....yes.

He tilts his head back and drops in the soothing liquid. He closes his eyes and takes a min. for himself. He feels good.

Andy: You should, you lucky son of a bitch, your gettin' married today. By the way, what time is it? Oh, shit.....4:15. I got to get to Jr. and change....she's gonna kill me.

He checks himself in the rear view mirror.

Andy: Better, alright lets go. I'm gettin' married.

He had a small smile on his face. It started in slow, and it started to grow the more he thought about her. He liked thinking about her. It was easy....it was fun..hell he was good at it. He checks his watch again

Andy: She is definitely goin' to kick my ass.

4:30 and no Andy. What patience Connie had was wearing thin. Jr. pop in to see how she's doing.

Jr: Hay.

Connie: Is he here?

Jr: No, not yet.

Connie: Where is he ? What could he be doing? Did he tell you where he was going?

Jr: Nope. All he said was (Imitating Andy as best he could) I got an apt. something I got to do (rubbing his head)

It took Connie a few seconds to realize what he was doing........she lets out a laugh.

Connie: That was good.

Jr.: Thanks.

Connie: Should I page him?

Jr.: Nope, (Holding up Andy's pager)

Connie: Oh my God!!

Jr.: Connie, your kiddin' me right? You told him 5 o'clock. That means he'll be here 5 min. to 5. You got to know by now he hates being the center of attention.

Connie: You don't think he's got cold feet?

Jr. crosses the room to give her a hug.

Jr.: No, I don't think its cold feet or anything like that.

Knock at the door

Connie: Come in.

Diane: Hay, just checkin' in. Need anything?

Connie: A husband to marry.

Diane: Yeah, I noticed he wasn't here yet.

Jr.: Connie thinks its cold feet.

Diane: Connie, let me tell you about the last time Andy got married. He worked a full shift........8a to 4p. His wedding was at 6. He got to the church at 5:45. Bobby almost killed him. So, relax, he'll be here.

Connie: I know, I know.

Jr.: So, can I get you anything? Water? Juice? Wine?

Connie: No, I'm good. Thanks.

Jr.: Ok, I'll give you a heads up when he gets here.

Connie: Thanks.

Diane and Jr. turn to go back to the party

Connie: Diane, could you hang out for a min. or two??

Diane: Sure.

Connie: Diane, I know I've said this before, but thanks for all you did. You know you are partly responsible for today. When the issue of us not being married came up during the adoption, Andy brought it up, gettin' married........If you hadn't done ........

Diane: Connie, he would have asked you anyway. You do realize that don't you? He just would have taken a little longer. Sometimes he needs a nudge.

Connie: A nudge? I was ready to push him off a roof.

Diane: It was the reverse for me and Bobby. I was the one dragging my feet. He was so patient with me. I had some issues to work out. I just wish we could have had more time together an husband and wife................cherish your time together.

Connie: Do you still miss him?

Diane: Everyday.

The two women are lost in their thought for a moment

Connie: So, how's the party?

Diane: Excellent. Oh, and your mom, what a doll.

Connie: Yeah, she's sweet. Alright, why don't you get back out there and enjoy yourself?

Diane: Sure you don't need anything?

Connie: I'll have all I need soon. Thanks.

Connie sits on the bed, looking out the window. She can hear bits of conversation and music from the other room. She is happy everyone could make it today. She says a small silent prayer for one more person to make it.

4:45

Andy stands outside the apartment. He can hear the party going on inside. He takes a second, rubs his head, adjusts his tie. He is wearing his best navy blue suit with the French blue short sleeved shirt and a striped silk tie. Gets his keys out and as he goes to put a key in the lock, the door opens.

Mom: Andy?

Andy: Mrs. McDowell, everything ok?

Mom: Now it is.

Andy: Yeah, sorry, I was stuck in traffic.

Mom: Ok, no problem............come on in and say hello to everyone.

As Andy walks through the door, everyone turns and cheers.

Andy(Thinking to himself) Great.

Everyone lines up for hugs and kisses and a few jabs.

James: Hay, your early!

Andy: Easy Sarg.

James: Congrats, big guy.

Andy: Thanks

All down the line.

Andy: (thinking to himself) Everyones a comedian.

Connie hears the cheer and knows everything is ok. She bows her head and says a silent thank you. Jr. knocks

Connie: yeah?

Jr.: He's here.

Connie: k

Jr.: You look beautiful,Connie. Congratulations.

Connie: Thanks.

She checks herself out in the mirror

Knock at the door.

Connie: Yeah?

The door opens just a crack

Andy: Hay.

Connie: Hay yourself

Andy: Ready?

Connie: Yep.

Mom opens the door just enough to get in.

Mom: (With tears brimming in her eyes) Stunning, simply stunning.

Connie: Thanks Mom. They hug

Mom: Lets go.

Everyone has taken their seets. Andy, Jr. and John I are standing by the window. A gental breeze was blowing . The sun filled the apt.. As the bedroom door opens all turn to see a vission of beauity. She was absolutly glowing.Connie and her mom hook arms and walk to the window. Connie and Andy lock eyes and smile. You know that smile? That one when your in love, you think no one sees or understands whats going on?

Yeah, that smile.

Connie's mom hands her to Andy

Mom: Be good to each other. She gives them each a kiss

John I: Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today.........

Andy: Excuse me John, I have something to say first.......

John I: (Looking rather confused) Ok

Andy: I want to thank you all for your love, support and for being here today. This group is a unique one-----a gathering without who many of our joys wouldn't be possible. I'd ask that we take a moment and say a prayer and reflect on loved ones who aren't here in body, but are sharing our happiness in spirit.

Everyone bows their head, John gives them a moment.

John: We are gathered here today to join this man and this woman in marrage. First, I am required to ask anyone present who knows any reason why these persons may not lawfully marry, to declare it now.

(John waits only a heartbeat, then continues)

John: Father, you have made the bond of marriage a holy mystery. With faith in you and each other, they pledge their love today. My dear friends, you have come together in this place so that the Lord may seal and strenthen your love . And so, in the presence of these witnesses, I ask you to state your intentions.

(Their eyes have been absolutly locked on each other from the start)

Andy: (Holding her hand) I used to be afraid of falling in love, of givin' my heart away. How could I trust a woman to love me, to give me all that I wanted to give her. Connie, when I met you, I realized how much we could share together. You have renewed my life. Today, I join that life with yours.

Connie: Andy, I join my life to yours, not merely as your wife, but as your friend, your lover and your confidant. Let me be the shoulder you lean on, the rock on which you rest the companion of your life. With you I will walk my path from this day forward. I affirm the special bond and unique relationship that exists between us and promise to keep it always alive.

John: Andy, what symbol do you have as a pledge of these vows?

Jr. holds out the ring, which Andy takes) As you place this ring, a visible sign of your commitment, on the third finger of Connie's hand, repeat after me:

Connie this ring I give you, my personal gift and my personal promise, of love and trust and pride that you are my wife.

Andy repeats, never taking his eyes off of her.

John: Connie, what symbol do you have as a pledge of these vows?

(Mom holds out the ring, which Connie takes) As you place this ring, a visible sign of your commitment, on the third finger of Andy's hand repeat after me:

Andy this ring I give you, my personal gift and my personal promise, of love and trust and pride that you are my husband.

Connie repeats, never taking his eyes off of him.

John: That which God has joined torether, let no man devide. Congratulations. You may kiss the bride.

And they kiss, a soft, soft kiss. Connie is suprised at the lenght of the kiss. She is well aware of Andys dislike of public dissplay of affections. Never the less, she is sooooo enjoying it.

John: May God unite your hearts in the never ending bond of pure love. May your childern bring you happiness, and may your generous love for them be returned to you, many times over. May you have true friends to stand by you, both in joy and sorrow. May you be ready and willing to help and comfort all who come to you in need. May the Lord bless you with many happy years together, so that you may enjoy the rewards of a good life.

And may God bless you all, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit...............Amen.
