Chapter 3

One Last Thing I Gotta Do

3:30 and all is well. Almost. He was in no hurry to encourage memory. Andy had an appointment at a church. A Greek Orthodox Church. It was the church where he and Sylvia were married. The church were Theo was baptized. Where he prayed that his first born would be taken care of in heaven. He stood out front of the church for what seemed an eternity. He rubbed his head and muttered to himself;

Andy: Why do I feel like a 3rd grader who's been called to the principals office.

Happy to see Kostas Costas and Father Kankarides again. Anxious as to what their reaction would be upon hearing his news. He had an overwhelming admiration for the both of these men. He didn't want to loose their respect. He wanted their blessing. When he entered the church, his senses went insane. The sweet smell of incense filled his nostrils. In an instant, he was right back to where he didn't want to be. Wedding. Baptism. Funeral. All flashed before him. He rubs his head

Andy: Ay, yi, yi. Alright, alright. One foot in front of the other.

He could see them in the front of the church.

The three men exchange hellos.

Andy: Kostas, how are you?

Kostas: Andy, Andy my boy, how are you? Where is Theo? Is he alright?

Andy: He's fine, He's at home right now.

Kostas: I haven't seen him for some time now.

Kostas had always been in Theo's life. Although, these past few years Andy had been somewhat negligent in as far as keeping in contact with Kostas. He blamed only himself for that. Theo was too young to know any better. Connie, never one to push him too fast or too hard, had she known Kostas, she would have insisted Theo spend time with him.

Father Kankarides: Andrew. How are you?

Andy: Good. And better for seeing the both of you.

Kostas: Andy, what is it? You look troubled. Come. Sit.

They find a pew and sit down. Andy shoots right back up and starts to pace back and forth.

Andy: I've been meanin' to call you Kostas, its just..........there never seems .......enough time.

Kostas: Andy, what?

Andy: I've met a woman. A good woman. She is wonderful at keepin' care of Theo and her niece who we've adopted. We want to get married and I've come to ask your blessing.

The two men look at each other, then to Andy.

Kostas: Andy, if you chose this woman to be your wife, I know she must be special. For a woman to meet a man with a child, and to be able to love that child as her own, that is special. Your debit has been paid. It is time to live again. It is time to celebrate life. You live your life and your children learn from you. Teach Theo to live. Teach Theo to love. I would ask one thing of you, keep Sylvia's memory alive with Theo. Make me this promise and you will have my blessing.

Andy: I will. I promise. I would never disrespect your daughters memory. I've told Connie all about Sylvia. Connie helps Theo to remember.

Kostas: That is all I ask. I have always known you are a good man. You are a man of honor. That is why you are here today. Go with my blessing.

The two men hug and start to cry. The tears flow easy here in this place. Andy gathers himself and turns to Father Kankarides.

Andy: Father, back when I hit rock bottom, with the death of my oldest son, you came and attempted to save my soul. You told me to put my faith in God hands and I wanted nothing to do with a God who allowed my son to be killed. I had very little faith. You help me see the world didn't revolve around me. I've come to terms with that. I've got another chance here Father. Can I count on you for counsel if need be?

Father K: Andrew, the doors to this house will always be open to you. Your soul belongs to God. if your ship goes drifting---He will guide it back. But please, do not wait until you are in pain. Please, come see us in your good times.

With a trembling voice

Andy: I will. Connie would like that. I would like that. Theo needs to know his roots.

Father K: Then go with God. Live a good life.

Andy is feeling fatigued. He has to sit. With head in hands, he try to hold back his emotions. Kostas and Father K see this and know he needs his space. Alone now, he lets it all out. He tries to be happy. but all he can see right at this moment is Sylvia walking down the aisle, Bobby at the alter and Andy J in his Air Force uniform. All very special people in his life. He cried for all of them. He missed them all dearly. He allowed himself to morn for them. Because he knew, that the tears and the tearing of his heart was for himself. He cried because he was so suddenly robbed of good companion, sound judgment and familiar counsel. He had to go. It was time for him to start a new life. Andy Sipowicz, ever the watchmaker. Taking himself apart and putting himself back together. Everyday.

Times like these we learn to live again.

Time and time again.
