Wave On Wave
You
came upon me wave on wave
You’re
the reason I’m still here, yeah
Am
I the one you were sent to save?
You
came upon me wave on wave.
As they walked down the street arm in arm Andy tried to settle himself.
All the weeks of preparing for the trial, dealing with an interim boss, holding
things together at work and at home all served to stir him up. They walked in
silence to the car. Once inside, insulated from the world around him, he broke
down. The anxiety of facing Sinclair, the feeling of relief that it was over and
wanting to drink all fell out of him. She takes him into her arms.
Andy:
Oh God Connie, I don’t ever want to feel this way again. I don’t know if I
have any strength left in me.
Connie:
It’s over now…breath. I’m right here…let me be your strength…lean on
me.
After a few sobs, he began to regain his composure. He felt safe with
her. He has his girl beside him. She was all he needed.
Andy:
Wow…where’d that come from?
Connie:
It’s called be human, Superman.
He looked at her from the corner of his eye. A smidgen embarrassed, but
forever grateful she was there with him. He reached for her hand and held on
tight. They sat in silence listening to the radio.
Some
people can be bad
The
things they do the things they say
But
baby I’ll wipe away those bitter tears
I’ll
chase away those restless fears
That
turn your blue skies into gray
Why
worry, there should be laughter after pain
There
should be sunshine after rain
These
things have always been the same
So
why worry now
Baby
when I get down I turn to you
And
you make sense of what I do
I
know it isn’t hard to say
But
baby just when this world seems mean and cold
Our
loves come shining red and gold
All
the rest is by the way
Why
worry, there should be laughter after pain
There
should be sunshine after rain
These
things have always been the same
So
why worry now
Why
worry now.***
Andy:
Thank you.
Connie:
For what?
Andy:
Everything.
Connie:
(Smiling) Your welcome. (Pause) Ready?
Andy:
For what?
Connie:
Everything.
Andy:
Yeah, now I am.
She
started to drive to Sam Cannelli's.
Andy:
(Clearing his throat) Ah, do you think we could stop home so I can clean myself
up a bit?
This would throw a wrench into her plan.
Connie:
(Cautionshly) You look fine.
Andy:
I’d like to clean up.
Connie:
(Reaching for the glove compartment) Here, use one of these.
Andy:
(With a frown) I’m not gonna use an ass wipe to clean up.
Connie:
(Looking at her watch) Andy, if we go home, we’ll be late. I have reservations
for 5:30…with the traffic and all…
Andy:
(A bit miffed) Never mind.
Connie:
(To herself) Oh
shit, now he’s gonna pout. Let him. He’ll get over it once he finds out.
They drove the rest of the
way in silence. As soon as they arrived at the restaurant, he went to the mens
room. She waited for him at the bar and took this opportunity to call home.
Connie:
Andrea? Yeah, so far so good. How’s the kids?…good…ok…give them a kiss
for me…right, around dinner time…ok…thanks again…got to go, here he
comes.
Andy:
Who was that?
Connie:
Andrea, just checking in…
Andy:
Everything ok?
Connie:
(Smiling) Prefect.
Soon they were seated in a quiet area of the dining room. The lighting
was very soft and romantic. The waiter lit a small candle in the middle of the
table.
Waiter:
I’ll be back in a few minutes to take your order.
Connie:
(Beaming) This is nice, huh?
Andy:
Could use a little more light…can’t hardly see the menu.
Connie:
(Biting her lip and thinking to herself) I
won’t let him dictate the mood…I won’t let him dictate the mood..Man
he’s gonna feel like shit when he finds out.
The waiter returned to take their orders for appetizers and dinner.
Andy:
I’ll have the umm…
Connie:
Why don’t we have the Fettuccine Alfredo for two?
Andy:
(Looking at her over the menu) Yeah, good…I guess you got more light over that
side of the table.
Connie:
(Ignoring his last comment) And I’ll have the Grilled Filet Mignon with
roasted garlic potatoes.
Waiter:
And you sir?
Andy:
(Clearing his throat) Let me have the Grilled Boneless Chicken Breast in the
garlic butter sauce.
Waiter:
And you vegetable?
Andy:
( Handing the waiter his menu) Baked potato will be fine.
Waiter:
Thank you.
Connie
went right on smiling at Andy. She knew his shorts were in a bind. And
rightfully so. It had been a long hot summer. He needed to catch a break. She
did her best to comfort him during that time. It was now pay-off time for both
of them. She really wanted to wait till after dinner to spring her surprise on
him. If she tells him now, maybe he’ll relax a bit. She takes a small box out
of her jacket pocket and slides it over to Andy.
Andy:
What’s this now?
Connie:
It’s a gift from me to you…open it and see.
He looks at her curiously. He opens the box to find a key with an address
tag on it. He takes out his glasses and reads the tag.
Andy:
Eileen Waldon…36 Ocean Drive…Cape May. What’s this all about?
Connie:
(Taking a deep breath) I thought we could use a break. Eileen offered me the use
of her house after we put the wedding on hold. I finally decided to take her up
on it. We go tonight.
Andy:
(Looking rather surprised) Tonight? What…?
Connie:
Andy, its all worked out. The kids are staying with Andrea. The bags are packed,
we got a full tank of gas and we’re going after dinner.
Andy:
But…
Connie:
What? Don’t you think we could use a break? I know I can…and I thought with
you being done testifying you could use a little down time. You’ve been
busting your hump for months now.
He sat there stunned. He didn’t know what to say. He could not argue
with her…every point she made was a valid one. He’d be the first to admit
what a pain in the ass he has been. And she took it…never complaining or
grumbling about anything.
Andy:
(To himself:I should be doing this for her)
Connie…(Clearing his throat) I..don’t know what…
Connie:
(Reaching over to touch his hand) Andy, we deserve this. We both worked hard
these past few months. I want to reconnect…be Andy & Connie for a few
days. What do you think?
Andy:
I agree. You’re absolutely right. (Looking deep into her eyes) You truly are
amazing.
Connie:
(Smiling back at him) Thanks, your not so bad yourself.
The mood was much better while they ate their food. They made plans for
the weekend. They finally got on the road about 7:30. When they finally got to
Cape May, they had a little trouble finding the house in the dark. Andy unpacked
the car while Connie took a look around. Both were very happy with their
surroundings. Andy checked out some ESPN while Connie took a shower. After she
was done, she made the bed and finished unpacking. Andy took that time to
shower. When he came out of the shower, he found Connie falling asleep on the
couch. He nudged her over so that he could sit with her. It wasn’t long before
both of them were ready to pass out, so off to bed they went. Tomorrow would be
a full day.
Connie woke up early. She looked out the window and realized that the sun
wasn’t up yet. She decided to go watch the sun rise. She slipped out of
Andy’s embrace very slowly as not to wake him. She opened the sliding glass
door that led to the deck and went outside. The air was cool and a touch damp.
Being so close to the ocean and hearing the waves brought all her scenes alive.
She stood at the end of the deck with her back to the glass doors and admired
the beauty around her. There wasn’t another soul around for miles. Eileen told
her this was the best time of year at the shore. She felt as if she had her own
private beach. The sun was just starting to come up when she heard a noise from
behind her. She turned to see Andy joining her on the deck. He was wrapped in a
thick quilt.
Connie:
Hey.
Andy:
Hey.
Connie:
Beautiful, isn’t it?
Andy:
Very.
He walked up behind her and wrapped her in the quilt with him.
Connie:
Thanks…I was getting chilly.
They stood together and watched the sun come up over the ocean wrapped in
the comfort of their love. Connie began to sway ever so slightly back and forth.
Andy had his arms around her waist. Unconsciously he began to sway with her. It
wasn’t long before this caused a reaction. He moved his hands to her hips and
pulled her in closer.
Andy:
Ah, want to take a walk on the beach?
Connie:
Nope.
Andy:
Ah, want to get something to eat?
Connie:
Nope.
Andy:
(Kissing her neck) Want to take this inside?
Connie:
Absolutely not…its not my fault you can’t control yourself.
Andy:
When it comes to you…guilty as charged.
He leans in to nibble on her neck. She offers no resistance. She can feel
him getting hard against her backside. He let go of her hip, reached around
sliding his hand down her front and found her warm and moist. She moned with
delight. He slid his finger over that precise spot. She pushed herself hard into
his crouch. She then reached around and pulled his boxers off, freeing him.
Andy:
Just me, you and the sea gulls, huh?
Connie:
I don’t think they’ll notice.
She bends over now fully grinding her butox into his crouch. She holds on
to the railing for support. He began to tease her with his hardness. She started
to thrust herself at him. He enters her with the greatest of ease. He started a
very slow, rhythmic pace of sliding in and out of her. The quilt fell off of
them. She was right, the sea gulls paid them no mind. He placed his hands on her
hips and pulled her back to meet each of his thrust. She presented no protest to
this. She gave all of herself to him. Deeper and deeper he buried himself in
her. She could feel him pulsating
inside of her. She could no longer hold back her climax. She let out a soft, yet
deep mone and tossed her head back. Andy was worthless. It took every ounce of
energy to keep standing. His legs finally gave out on him and he fell to his
knees. Connie looked back over her shoulder at him and smiled a sly smile.
Connie:
Don’t beg…it’s so unbecoming.
Andy:
Cute, real cute. Gimme a hand.
She turned and offered her hand to him. He pulled her down. They knelt
there, eye to eye. He brushed her hair back away from her face to see her eyes.
She put her arms around his neck. For the longest time, they just starred into
each other. Very softly they kiss.
Andy:
Reconnecting huh?
Connie:
Not bad…not bad at all.
After a few more hugs and kisses, they went back into the house. Connie
jumped in the shower while Andy checked the local paper for things to do. After
Andy took his shower they headed out for breakfast at the local diner. They sat
at the counter and talked of what they should do with their day. A few of the
friendly locals offered a few options. While Connie found this refreshing and
somewhat reminessant of her hometown, Andy thought it a bit intrusive. Non-the
less, he kept his tone civil and a smile on his face. They finished eating
breakfast and headed out to start their day.
They drove to the heart of downtown Cape May. They strolled around hand
in hand at the Oktoberfest Fall Block Party. There were crafters showing off
their wares, plenty of food venders and some antique dealers. Andy and Connie
took their time soaking it all in. Later they went to the beach. It was a
perfect beach day. The sand was warm and the water was refreshing. As they
walked along the water edge, they came upon a Surf Fishing Tournament. They sat
and watched for a bit. Connie was distracted by a group of college kids flying
kites. She had a nice conversation with them while Andy chatted with a few of
the fisherman about the type of lines they were using. Later they made their way
to the Cape May Lighthouse. On a day like this, you really could see forever.
It was lunchtime when they headed back to the Oktoberfest to grab
something to eat. They had a light lunch while listening to a few oompah-pah
bands. From there they went to the Washington Street Mall. They stopped at an
outdoor café for some ice cream. They sat side by side and shared a cup of
Godiva white chocolate raspberry swirl. Connie ran her fingers across his thigh
lightly, stroking the inside like he loved her to making his leg tingle with
pleasure. Andy fed her a spoon full of ice cream accidentally on purpose bumping
her bottom lip so he could watch her tongue run over her bottom lip. The day was
full of affectionate glances and playful touching.
At about 3 o’clock they decided to head for home. They stopped along
the way to pick up some salt-water taffy for Andrea and some T-shirts for the
kids. They also stopped at a small super market to pick up some dinner. They
decided to have a small bar-b-que. Connie fell asleep on the ride home.
Andy:
C’mon sleepyhead…we’re home.
Connie:
(Rubbing her eyes) Wow…that was quick.
Andy:
Yeah, I only got lost once.
Connie:
Let me help you with the bags.
They unpacked the car. Andy checked out the grill to make sure it was
safe to use while Connie got them some drinks. They sat in the lounge chairs on
the deck.
Andy:
I’ll start dinner in about half an hour.
Connie:
Good…here (Handing him a coke)
Andy:
Thanks.
They
sat holding hands looking at the ocean totally relaxed and enjoying each
other’s company.
Andy:
This really was a good idea.
Connie:
Yeah, it’s been a long time since I’ve been this relaxed.
They wanted to eat outside, so at 5 o’clock Andy fired up the grill
while Connie set the pick-nick table and prepared a small tossed salad. Andy
cooked the chicken to perfection. After they were done eating they sat and
watched the sun set. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day. When the sun went
down so did the temperature so they went inside to have dessert. They sat at the
breakfast bar and had strawberries and cream. After, they plopped on the couch
and tried to find something to watch. Connie dozed off for a bit. She felt so
comfortable snuggling with Andy. She woke up when she heard the popcorn popping
in the microwave.
Connie:
Umm…that smells good.
Andy:
Sorry…I didn’t mean to wake you
Connie:
No problem
Andy:
Want something to drink?
Connie:
Yeah, sounds good.
He was soon back on the couch sharing popcorn and soda with his girl.
Andy started to channel surf, occasionally checking in on the Yankees playoff
game. Connie knew he wanted to watch the game and was just pretending not to
have interest in the game.
Connie:
Hey, you know what?
Andy:
What’s that?
Connie:
I’m gonna treat myself to a bubble bath.
Andy:
And what am I supposed to do?
Connie:
You watch the game. My legs are killing me from all the walking we did today.
Andy:
(Raising his eyebrow) Are you sure? I mean…
Connie:
No, really. This will be a real treat. A bubble bath with no interruptions would
be great. Enjoy the game.
Connie made her way to the bathroom got her situated. Andy felt a little
guilty at first, but was soon into the game. In about an hour the game was over.
He made his way to the bathroom. The door was half opened as he entered the
bathroom. He stood there looking at her. As he did, Connie sat up startled. The
sight of her sent a million goose bumps through him. Her damp hair, parted wet
lips, the soapy water dripping down her breast formed small snowcaps on her
hardened nipples. This caused a familiar stirring between his legs. He let out a
small whimper.
Andy:
Ah, (Trying to think of something to say) you ok?
Connie:
Yeah, good. (Sliding back down into the water) How was the game?
Andy:
Umm…(Looking to get a better view of her cleavage)…ok…you almost done?
Your gonna turn into a prune.
Connie:
(With a seductive smile) Almost…I was just getting ready to rinse off…wanna
help?
She pulled the cap off the drain to let the water run out. Connie stood
up very slowly. This caused the soapy water to drip off her like a melting ice
cream cone on a hot day. He moistened his lips and swallowed hard. She offered
him the extended showerhead. Andy slowly walked towards Connie and took the
showerhead from her. Connie turned her back to Andy. He ran the water over her
starting with her shoulders. He took a half a step back to watch as the milky
water cascaded down her back, over her backside and down her endless legs. She
peeked over her shoulder at him. He didn’t notice this.
Connie:
How you making out?
Andy:
Fine.
Connie:
Can I turn around yet?
Andy:
(Almost in a whisper) Ah, I just want to make sure I get all the soap off.
Connie:
Uh huh…now?
Andy:
(Taking a deep breath) Yep.
She turned to face him. Their eyes locked onto each other. He started to
run the water over her. He started at her neck. She tilted her head back ever so
gently. He changed the showerhead to the light setting and moved to her breast.
He was taking his time and enjoying every minute of it. He moved to her belly.
This caused her to shiver a bit. It must have been the anticipation of where he
was going next. He looked at Connie standing there and let his mind whirl for a
second or two. He changed the setting to pulse when he reached the top of her
pubic area. Some of the soap had gathered in her pubic hair, and he was just
being diligent about doing a good job. Andy never touched her…at least not
with his hands. His eyes…that’s another story. He made love to her body with
his eyes. She watched his eyes follow the water down her body. He moved to the
top of her thighs. With the showerhead, he nudged her legs apart. She was biting
her bottom lip as he ran the water over her clitoris for a few seconds. Then he
traced the outline of her pubic hair. He repeated this process a few times.
Finally she moaned with sheer delight. He was pleased with her reaction. He
returned the setting back to soft for her legs. He bent down on one knee and
continued to follow the path of water. The water had tickled her toes and she
let out a soft giggle.
He had stood up again and locked eyes with her. He had a very happy grin
on his face. He knew what he had done, and he was proud of it.
Connie:
(Clearing her throat) Hand me my robe please?
Andy:
(Raising his eyebrow) Sure.
As Connie stepped out of the tub, Andy helped her put on her robe. He
gently gathered her hair, put it off to one side and let his lips brush against
her neck. She quickly turned to face him. The robe wasn’t very thick so he
could see her nipples protruding through the material. Small beads of moisture
raced down her neck and gathered in her cleavage. Her robe wasn’t closed all
the way. It more or less clung to her due to her moist skin. She teased him by
biting her bottom lip and staring at him. He took a step toward her and she
backed up. Not saying a word, she left the bathroom and went to the bedroom. He
was left standing there. He just smiled. He loved the fact that she was
confident enough to know he would soon follow.
He took his time getting ready for bed. He took a shower, shaved, trimmed
his mustache and brushed his teeth. He wrapped an extra large towel around his
waist and put one over his shoulders. He went out to the living room and cleaned
up his mess from the game. He locked up and turned off the lights. He noticed a
glow coming from the bedroom. He found her there, sitting on a bench in front of
the glass window brushing her hair. Connie had lit dozen or so candles. He came
in and sat on the edge of the bed facing her.
Andy:
You look great.
Connie:
So do you.
Andy:
(Pointing to himself) What this old thing? I had this old thing for years.
Connie:
You wear it well.
She walked over and stood in front of him. He spread his legs so she
could stand between them. She kissed the top of his head. He buried his face in
her chest. She leaned down and playfully nibbled at his ear. He moved his head
in a half-hearted attempt to get away from her.
Connie:
(Surprised) There a problem?
He cupped her face in his hands.
Andy:
Nope.
He kissed her deeply and passionately. He broke the kiss and began
kissing her neck. He pulled on the belt of her robe as she tugged the towel off
of him. The robe and towel hit the floor at the same time. They stood there,
souls exposed with a raging fire burning inside them. Andy cupped her breast in
his hands and began kissing and sucking on her nipples. Connie placed her hands
on the back of his head and pulled him tight. Slowly he moved up her chest to
her neck. He moved his hands down her side and came to rest on her hips. She
hugged him tightly around his neck. He paused for a moment, scooped her up in
his arms and placed her on the bed. He sat beside her and with his finger began
to trace her body. This caused her body to tremble.
Connie:
You are such a tease.
Andy:
(Letting out a small laugh) I’ve been called many things in my life…and that
ain’t never been one of them.
Connie:
I guess there’s a first time for everything.
He stretched out on the bed beside her. They lay face to face. She ran
her fingers across his chest, stopping to softly play with his nipples. He ran
his hand down her side coming to rest on her ass giving it a squeeze. Her hand
found his penis. She began stroking very slowly. He rolled on his back, enjoying
the attention. A little while later, she positioned herself between his legs and
took him into her mouth. Her hair tickled his balls and thigh. He propped
himself up on his elbows to try and bring her to a stop. It wasn’t going to
take much to get him off tonight.
Andy:
Connie…
Connie:
Yes Andy…(As she ran her tongue to the base of his penis)
Andy:
Ah…I…ah…
Connie:
Yes Andy (As she kissed his inner thigh)
Andy:
Connie…
Connie:
Yes Andy (As she straddled him)
Andy:
Oh God…
For a few seconds she sat perfectly still, just looking down at him.
Inside her body was a raging orgasm. All the playfulness of the day and the him
rinsing her off really got her off. He had to close his eyes in order to regain
some sort of control. Very very slowly, she began to rock back and forth.
Connie:
(Whispering) Andy, look at me. (Rocking a tad faster)
Andy:
I can’t.
Connie:
Andy…let it go. (Rocking faster)
Their hands met in mid-air. They interlocked their fingers. She pinned
his hands above his head. She leaned in to kiss him. She let go of his hand and
cupped his face with it.
Connie:
Andy…look at me.
He opened his eyes and saw her at his breath edge.
Andy:
I…can’t…hold…
She ups the pace.
Andy:
OH GOD!
Connie:
LET GO!
And he did. She felt him explode inside her. This helped to bring her to
a breathless climax. His mind whirled as her lips brushed against his cheek. She
carefully dismounted him and lay beside him. Connie put her hand on Andy’s
chest, he then placed his onto of hers. Andy struggled to refocus, then he gave
up and decided to enjoy the feeling. He turned his head to look at her.
Andy:
I love you.
Connie:
Good. Cause I love you too.
The
squad was on the scene of a double homicide. Andy and Connie are late arriving.
They have been coming into work together this past week or so. Connie has been
feeling crappy. He won’t let her out of his sight. He wants her to go see the
doctor. But she insists it’s only a bug and it will pass. For three straight
they have been having the same conversation.
Andy:
Tonight, I’m callin’ the
doctor.
Connie:
No, really, it’s just a bug Andy…it will pass.
Andy:
Right, you been sayin’ that for a week now. If it’s just a bug, how come the
rest of us don’t have it??
Connie:
(Growing inpatient with this conversation) Andy…c’mon…
Andy:
Your throwin’ up when you don’t eat anything to begin with…your color is
way off…all you do is sleep…somethin’ is wrong here…your appetite is for
shit…
Connie:
(Yelling) ANDREW SIPOWICZ…FOR THE LOVE OF GOD…GIVE IT A REST!!
Andy:
See, see, that’s another thing…your temper…where’d that come from? If
Medavoy wasn’t in the room with you the other day…you would have ripped that
skell’s eyes out.
Connie:
He raped a 15-year-old girl!
Andy:
You never let your emotions show in your work before…I’m tellin’ you
somethin’…
Connie:
Christ, Andy…will you give me a little room to breathe.
They arrive at the crime scene. They both slam the door of the car as
they exit. Andy walks to Greg and asked to be brought up to speed. Connie seeks
out Rita.
Connie:
I’m telling you Rita…I Love him to death, but this past few days he’s been
up my ass so much…
Rita:
It’s just his way…you of all people should know that.
Connie:
(Sighing) I don’t know…maybe I should see a doctor.
Rita:
Can’t hurt, right? Anyway,
should we start a canvas?
Connie:
Yeah…whose case is it anyway?
Rita:
Greg and Baldwin.
Rita and Connie start up the stairs to question the neighbors when
suddenly Connie has to sit down.
Rita:
Connie…what’s wrong?
Connie:
I feel real lightheaded…spinning…oh boy…
Rita:
(Yelling) ANDY, GREG…YO GUYS…I NEED HELP
The four guys come running.
Andy:
What the hell happened?
Rita:
We were on the way up to question the neighbors and she said she felt light
headed, then she passed out.
Andy:
Alright, that’s it…I’ve had enough of this shit…call a bus
Jr.:
15th squad to central K…
Andy met the ambulance at the ER entrance. By then Connie was awake and
alert.
Connie:
(To Andy) I can’t believe you called a bus…how embarrassing.
Andy:
(Holding her hand as they roll down the hall) Be quiet and let them do their
work.
Nurse:
Detective…you’ll have to wait over in chairs till we get her settled.
Andy:
(Kissing the back of her hand) You behave yourself in there…and I’ll see ya
real soon.
Connie:
Ok
She is curtain area three. Andy makes his way to chairs. First he sits,
then he paces, and then he sits then he paces. He tries to sneak a peak at her
and is caught by one of the nurses. He is sent back to chairs. After an hour
passes, a nurse comes to get him.
Andy:
Hey…howzzit goin’?
Connie:
Hi…I feel better. They took some blood and ordered some test.
Andy:
Good.
Connie:
I have to stay till the blood work gets back and these two IV’s are done. You
should call the boss and fill him in.
Andy:
Yeah, in a bit…any idea what the problem is?
Connie:
There’s a nasty bug going around, could be that.
Andy:
What else could it be?
Connie:
Andy…lets wait and see what the test shows…why don’t you go call the boss?
Andy:
Yeah…let me do that.
He went outside and made his phone calls. First he called John and asked
him to pick up Theo and Michelle after school. John said he would take them home
and wait for Connie and him to come home. Andy then asked to speak to Lieu and
filled him in. Andy then returned to Connie. When he got back she was asleep.
Andy:
(To himself) Somethin’s wrong…I know
it…This aint no flu. Look at her, she’s almost as white as the sheets.
IV’s, wires and machines…this isn’t gonna be good. (Sighing)
God, please let her be alright.
He
took a seat next to her bed and waited for the doctor to come and see them. He
held her hand and never took his eyes off of her while she slept. About two
hours later Dr. Monzsck showed up.
Dr. M. : She still sleeping?
Connie: No…I’m pretending
so I don’t have to listen to “Mr. I told you so.”
Andy: That’s pretty
funny…
Dr. M.: Connie, how you
feeling?
Connie: For the most part
just tired…out of sorts is the best way to put it.
Dr. M.: When was your last
period?
Andy: What’s that got to do
with anything?
Dr. M.: Detective,
please…do you remember Connie?
Connie: Oh…I’m gonna say
about two months ago.
Dr. M.: Is it unusual for you
to go that long between periods?
At
this point, the last thing she wanted to do was retell her story. She explained
to the doctor what happened to her when she was 15. She emphasized what her
doctor told her…that she wouldn’t be able to have children and that her
cycles would be rather mixed and infrequent.
Connie: What’s any of this
have to do with me passing out?
Dr. M.: Connie…you’re
pregnant.
It
was Andy’s turn to pass out. But he didn’t, he just held on to the side of
her bed for dear life and tried to refocus.
Connie: No…I can’t…I
was told…are you sure? Do you want to run that test again?
Andy: How?…how that happen?
Dr. M.: Well detective if you
don’t know that by now…
Andy: What’s this comedy
hour? How, I mean me with no prostate and her with her problems?
Dr. M.: (Turning to Andy)
When you had your prostate removed, did they remove you testicles?
Andy: No.
Dr. M.: Well, you still have
the ability to produce sperm and always will. Look, (He draws a small diagrams
for them) Your prostate glad is like a donut so to say wrapped around your
bladder. When there is a problem, one of the early signs is difficulty in
passing your urine. When the prostate is removed so is your seminal vesicle.
This vesicle acts as a lubricant for your sperm. You still have your testicles
which means you can still produce sperm and will go on producing it. It may be a
little harder for the sperm to travel, but it’s still there and it still makes
its way to the eggs.
Connie: But…
Dr. M.: I’m going to have
to your OB/GYN…but all the test come back positive that your pregnant. Why
don’t I give you two a little time to take this all in and I’ll be back in
about an hour to check your vitals. Mazel Tov.
They
sat in silence for a long while, each having a thousand thoughts run through
their heads.
Andy: (To himself) Oh
shit…what the hell…Hey God, this isn’t exactly what I had in mind when I
asked for her to be ok…Two kids in diapers at my age…won’t be long before
they’re changing my diapers. How’s this gonna work out? We’ll have to get
a bigger place…she’ll have to stop working…I’ll have to work
longer…food, clothes, diapers, education…Christ the list goes on forever.
Hey, hey it’s not a death sentence…get yourself together man…be there for
her…worry about that stuff later…We have to get married. I can just hear the
rumors at work now…Sipowicz knocked up McDowell…
Connie: (To herself) I’m
pregnant…I’m pregnant…I’m gonna have a baby. Oh my God. A child of our
own. This is too good to be true. A life is growing inside of me. Please
God…don’t let this be some sort of cruel joke. Let this be the real thing.
Oh man…two in diapers…less then two years ago I was alone and on my
own…and now this…we’ll have to get a bigger place…maybe even a house.
How cool would that be? A mom…I’m gonna be a mom…(Looking over at
Andy) look at him…the wheels are
spinning, I can tell…he’s gonna rub the top of his head right off.
She
reached out for his hand. He got up from his seat and took her hand. He sat down
beside her on the bed.
Andy: (Still holding her
hand) Connie…will you marry me?
Connie: (Trying not to laugh)
Andy…(She wanted to say something funny, but could see the seriousness in his
eyes) Yes, Andy, I will marry you.
Andy: Congratulations.
Connie: Congratulations to
you also.
He
hugged her with all his might.
Andy: Must have been
something in the ocean air that weekend.
Connie: Something fine.
Soon
after Dr. Monzack returned and released Connie. As they drove home they kept
their thoughts to themselves. When they got in, John was happy to see that
Connie was all right. After he left, it was business as usual…dinner, bath,
homework and story time. After the kids were in bed, Connie went to the kitchen
to clean up after dinner. She put the radio on low. Andy found her washing the
dishes. He sunk up behind her and gave her a hug around her belly.
Connie: Hey you…careful
there.
Andy: I will be, promise.
He
turned her around to face him. He took the wet dishrag from her, put it in the
sink and dried her hands. He held her face in his hands. He could see the
“glow” come over her. He kissed her lips, neck and then hugged her.
Connie: When should we tell
Theo?
Andy: After we get married.
Connie: Which will be…
Andy: Right now if you want.
Connie: Are you scared?
Andy: (Taking half a step
back from her and knowing he couldn’t lie to her) Yeah, a little…but it will
all work out.
Connie: Always does.
She
wrapped her arms around his neck and he wrapped his arms around her waist. As
the music softly played in the background, they danced very slowly together.
For
you, there’ll be no more crying,
For
you, the sun will be shining,
And
I feel that when I’m with you,
It’s
alright, I know its right.
To
you, I’ll give the world
To
you, I’ll never be cold
‘Cause
I feel that when I’m with you,
It’s
alright, I know its right.
And
the songbirds are singing
Like
they know the score,
And
I love you, I love you, I love you
Like
never before.
And
I wish you all the love in the world,
But
most of all, I wish it from myself.
And
the songbirds keep singing,
Like
they know the score,
And
I love you, I love you, I love you
Like
never before,like never before.
