The Aftermath of Oedipus Wrecked
Rated PG
This story is a continuation of the episode
“Oedipus Wrecked” and expands upon the last scene from that episode. This is
my interpretation of what might have happened after that last scene.
Enjoy!
She sat there staring silently at the television with Theo but she had no idea
what they were watching. She was too worried, too anxious, and too scared.
She heard his key turn in the door lock and then heard the door open. As Andy
entered the apartment, Theo jumped up into his father’s arms to greet him
oblivious to the day’s chaotic events.
Connie quickly told Theo to get ready for bed and to brush his teeth. She needed
a few minutes alone with Andy just to reassure herself that he was OK. It took
every ounce of strength she possessed right now not to just throw her arms
around him and never let him go. She could have lost him today. She’d had
plenty of time in the last few hours to examine that possibility and the thought
of that scared her more than she wanted to imagine. Losing him wasn’t an
option. She just wouldn’t accept it.
After giving Theo a big bear hug, Andy wasn’t sure what to do. He hadn’t
felt this shaken since Sylvia died. He’d come face to face with death today.
He looked over and saw the distraught look on Connie’s face. He could see she
was very close to crying and part of him just wanted to take her in his arms and
never let her go.
He slowly made his way to the couch and sat down. He motioned for her to sit
down with him.
His voice quivered with emotion as he asked her “Can you stay?”
“I’ll stay for as long as you need.” She replied as the tears fell down
her cheeks. He reached over then and took her hand and held onto it for dear
life. They stayed that way for what seemed like an eternity.
Finally, Connie composed herself enough and told Andy, “I better get Theo in
bed.”
“No, you stay here. I’ll do it.” He told her and then he reached up and
touched her face and wiped a stray tear away with the back of his hand. She
caught his hand as he got up to tuck Theo in for the night and kissed it.
“I’ll be right back.” He told her.
Andy walked into the bedroom and kissed his son on the forehead and tucked his
covers in.
“Goodnight, sport.”
“Goodnight Daddy. I love you.” As Theo hugged his dad.
“I love you too.” Replied Andy as he hugged his son tightly.
Connie peaked in through the crack in the doorway to see the precious sight of a
father and a son that truly loved each other. She watched as Andy closed the
door to the bedroom. He saw that she had been watching from just outside the
doorway.
He took her by the hand and led her back to the sofa.
“I don’t want to be alone tonight.” He confided in her.
“You don’t have to be alone. I told you I’ll stay as long as you want.”
They sat quietly just holding hands in the still silence of the apartment when
Connie decided it was time he knew how she felt about today.
“Andy, can I tell you something?”
“Sure…go ahead.”
“Today really scared me. I’ve never felt so frightened. For you. For me. For
both of us. I felt so helpless. Like there was nothing I could do. I don’t
ever want to feel that way again.”
“I know.”
“I just need you to hold me.” Andy put his arms around her.
“Tighter. Don’t ever let me go.” As she looked up at him and then
collapsed into his arms, her eyes were brimming with tears of relief and joy
that he was all right.
As he took her in his arms, he kissed the top of her head. He inhaled the sweet
fragrance of this extraordinary woman that he knew he was beginning to fall in
love with. He tightened his hold upon her. He never wanted to let her go. Tears
streamed down his face as they sat there clinging desperately to one another
into the long night.
Andy opened his eyes and rubbed them. The clock read 5:00 a.m. Sometime between
when he’d put Theo to bed and now, he vaguely remembered the events of last
night.
He woke to find himself neatly tucked in on the couch with a blanket over him
and a pillow under his head. He sat up and looked around to find that the
apartment was dark and empty. He thought just maybe he’d dreamed it all.
He shook his head again and rubbed the particles of sleep from his eyes. It was
then that he saw it. There on the end table he saw a note scribbled in
Connie’s handwriting. It read:
Andy,
It’s 4:00 a.m. I thought it best to leave before Theo woke up for school. I
let myself out. I hope that’s OK. I’ll make sure that Lt. Knows that
you’re putting in for some lost time today. Please get some rest.
I’ll check in on you later.
Love,
Connie
Andy picked up the phone and dialed her number.
“Connie?”
The phone rang on Connie’s nightstand. She’d just fallen asleep again trying
to catch a few more minutes of sleep before she need to get up and get to the
stationhouse. She picked up the phone.
“Hello. Andy??? What’s wrong?? Are you OK? Do you need me?”
“No, I just wanted to you to know how much I appreciated you being here last
night. I care so much about you.”
“I know you do. I care about you too.”
“I just wanted to tell you that.” There was a long silent pause on the line.
Andy then cleared his throat.
“I got your note. I will try to get some sleep. Would you like to come over
for dinner tonight?”
“Sure…I’ll be there right after work. What time? Do you want me to bring
anything?”
“No, I think Theo wants fish sticks tonight.”
“Fish sticks sounds fine by me. I can’t wait. I’ll see you tonight.”
“OK.”
“And, Andy, promise me you’ll try to get some sleep.”
“I will. I promise.”
“I’ll call you later. Goodnight.”
“OK, goodnight.”
As the line went dead, both of them sat there thinking about everything that had
happened in the last day and how it had brought them closer together than ever
before. Connie sat up in bed and smiled. She thought to herself. He’s
realizing it. He knows.
Andy sat there with the phone in his hand pondering all that had happened. He
had a lot to think about. He knew he was falling in love with Connie. There
wasn’t any doubt. He only hoped she knew how much he really cared about her.
After all, Disney World was only a week away.
