NYPD Blue Fanfiction

Tina's Fanfic
Extended Final Scene for “Oh, Mama”

Rated: PG

Author’s Note: This fanfic attempts to reconstruct the events we didn’t see during Andy and Connie’s night out with Theo to see “Monsters, Inc.”. It’s primary purpose is to replay the events of the evening from both Andy and Connie’s perspectives and allow both characters the opportunity to realize that they might just be falling for one another.

And that, my fellow A & Cers, is my primary objective when dealing with all things Andy and Connie!!! Have them realize they’re in love with one another and illustrate it accordingly.

As always, the characters are the property of Steven Bochco Productions.

SHE SAID (Connie’s Point of View):

Connie sat in her car a few blocks down the street from Andy’s apartment. She couldn’t believe she’d done it. Her pulse was still racing. Well, that ought to give him something to think about. She knew she’d remember every moment of this night.

They’d walked home from the movie hand in hand. All three of them. She’d had such a wonderful time with both of the Sipowicz boys tonight. But one in particular. She found herself thinking about Andy all the time anymore. It was so easy to be with him she thought. They genuinely enjoyed each other’s company.

She thought back to earlier this evening during the movie. Andy made it easy for her to like him. He was such a nice guy. His gentleness and compassion were only some of the things that attracted her to him. The way he loved and cared for his son held a special place in her heart as well. And she was falling for him more and more with each passing minute that they spent together.

Several times tonight during the movie, she’d caught him glancing over at her. She’d catch his eyes. She knew she’d have to go slow with Andy. But it was hard not to just scoop it all up and take him in like a breath of fresh air. She kept telling herself to slow down but tonight she had been caught up in the moment and the magic of the evening. So far their friendship revealed Andy to be quite old fashioned. He was always the gentleman with her.

Halfway through the film, Andy had reached for her hand while they watched the movie. He kept it enclosed in his for the rest of the evening and didn’t let go. Connie took that as a step in the right direction. A very positive sign indeed. She responded to his touch by resting her head on his shoulder and she heard him clear his throat. She knew he was more than a little nervous tonight. She wanted to make this so easy for him.

Just then, as luck would have it, Theo had asked to go to the bathroom and the reverie of the moment was broken. After Theo’s bathroom break, it had taken Andy a while but he got up enough courage to hold her hand again before the movie was over. Connie was encouraged by that. They walked back to Andy’s apartment hand in hand from the small neighborhood theatre just like a little family of three.

She remembered them saying goodnight to one another. She’d told Andy what a wonderful time she’d had and it was true. She loved and enjoyed spending time with Theo but this was about Andy. Over the last few months, their friendship had become very special to Connie and she considered Andy an important part of her life. She began to see Andy in a whole new light. He was different from just a co-worker or friend but someone she could really love.

Tonight when they’d said their goodbyes, she decided to test the waters. Her feelings for Andy were growing and she just had to know. He had become more than just a friend to her now. He really was someone she could love.

She hadn’t meant to get carried away when he’d kissed her cheek but she just couldn’t help herself. It was now or never she thought and that’s when it happened. She returned his kiss on the cheek with one of her own and then her lips lingered downward and found his mouth. She just couldn’t contain her joy.

As they’d parted, she’d seen the stunned amazement in Andy’s eyes as she told him good night. Connie McDowell was falling for him.

HE SAID (Andy’s Point of View):

He quickly walked Theo up the steps and unlocked the door to the apartment. He got him ready for bed and tucked him in for the night. Andy then sat down on the couch, then he got up and went to the refrigerator for a drink, then he went over to his fish and fed them. He rubbed his forehead. Good grief, Andy thought. This has got to be a mistake.

The taste of her was still on his lips. And Andy knew it would be quite a while before he’d forget it. “What am I doing?” he thought. “I’m old enough to be her father.”

Andy was incredulous. He found it hard to believe that she might actually like him but then he examined their relationship in greater detail. Maybe she was using him as a way to get closer to Theo. Maybe she didn’t really like him at all.

Andy thought about that for a bit and wondered if maybe she was using Theo as a a crutch, as a way to fill the void for not being able to be there for her own daughter. All these thoughts filled his head.

Andy locked up for the night and got ready for bed. He lay there underneath the covers but still couldn’t fall asleep. That kiss still bothered him. The taste of her could drive a man crazy he thought. He sat up in bed, turned the light on and tried to examine his feelings for Connie. If that didn’t work, maybe he’d end up having to take a cold shower.

Connie was a wonderful person with a loving spirit. She was a good, smart cop and he admired the way she did her job. He owed her more than she could ever know. She’d kept him sober after Danny died. It had been one of the darkest moments of his life since he had stopped drinking six years ago. She’d kept him from jumping back into the dark, dim wasteland that came with being an alcoholic. Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. You were never really safe.

Ever since he’d helped her deal with the loss of her adopted daughter, he’d felt closer to her. We all have losses in our lives he thought. The types of losses we suffer might be different but that didn’t make them hurt any less.

He thought back to her blind date recently with that two-bit corporate lawyer and how jealous he’d been. Yes, it had been jealousy even if he didn’t want to admit it to himself. The thought of another man touching her made him want to hit something ---HARD!!!! He’d never admit that to her. He had a hard enough time admitting it to himself but he wanted to be that man. He wanted to be the man to make her smile, make her laugh and never make her cry. He wanted to take her in his arms and love her like she deserved to be loved. God, those feelings scared him. He thought he’d been able to bury those feelings when he buried Sylvia.

God, if one little kiss made him feel this way, how would things be if they were to ever become lovers? That kiss sent his senses reeling. He hadn’t felt this strongly about someone since he fell in love with Sylvia.

When she’d kissed him tonight, he was amazed and surprised. Her feelings overwhelmed him. He didn’t want to believe…. he didn’t want to tempt fate. Anything good in his life always seemed to be taken away. He had his job and he had his son. He couldn’t allow room in his life for anything more or else it too might be taken away as all the other good people in his life had been…. Danny, Bobby, Andy Jr. and Sylvia. Anything good had always been taken away as far as Andy was concerned.

Connie McDowell was weaving her way into his heart and his soul. She was like a soothing balm to his battered soul. He seemed to be helpless to resist this urgent pull to take her in his arms and never let her go.

And as he slowly began to fall asleep, Andy realized that maybe; just maybe he might be falling in love too.

The End
