Separation Anxiety

It’s late Friday afternoon and Andy, Theo and Michelle are doing some grocery shopping while Connie is home making dinner. Andy has spent most of their shopping time trying to keep Michelle from grabbing everything within her reach.

As she grabs yet another box off a shelf Andy scolds, “enough young lady.”

Smiling at her daddy with her most angelic look, she holds out her arms to him. “Dada up!”

“No up Michelle. We’ve got to finish our shopping and get home.” He says sternly watching as her face crumbles into a pitiful pout. “Come on Princess just hang on a little while longer and I’ll get you a treat on our way out.” He sighs with relief as her smile comes back into place. “You are such a little con artist,” he teases as she sits back and returns his gaze.

“Me too Dad?” Theo asks.

“Sure buddy, you’ve been a big help with the shopping so I don’t see why you can’t get 2 treats.” Andy winks.

“Cool, I even know what I want.” Theo smiles as he grabs his dad’s hand, “thanks Dad.”

“You’re welcome Sport, now let’s finish getting the stuff on Mom’s list then we’ll grab those treats and get outta here.” Andy smiles.

As they finish up Andy grabs a box of Michelle’s favorite cookies, which has her grinning from ear to ear as she hugs the box and studies the pictures on the outside. Theo picks out a comic book and a box of some new high sugar cereal he saw advertised on TV. Andy was sure he’d hear it from Connie when they got home but he figured it was worth the lecture since it helped get the shopping done quicker.

At the checkout line as they wait, Theo sees a magazine with a couple kissing on the cover. Looking up at Andy he asks, “Dad, why do people kiss?”

Uncomfortably Andy looks around as he answers. “Because they like each other I guess.”

Pointing to the magazine picture “no Dad. Why do they kiss like that? You know, with their eyes closed and all close like that. You and Mom kiss like that sometimes. How come?”

Very uncomfortable now Andy tries to distract Theo “help me put the stuff up Buddy.”

As Theo starts passing things to Andy he asks again. “How come Dad?”

“Theo, this isn’t the place to talk about kissing. Okay? Why don’t we discuss it when we get home.” Andy looks around again making sure no one is listening in on their conversation.

“Okay. Maybe mom knows right Dad?”

“Yeah, maybe she knows” Andy mutters under his breath, relieved to be off the hook for the time being.

“Kish Da, kish ‘eo” Michelle calls out to Andy and Theo causing them both to smile.

Theo stands in front of the cart allowing Michelle to grab his head and kiss him loudly. A lady in line behind them coos at the kids and tells Andy how adorable they are. Thanking her, he continues getting them through the checkout line and thankfully out of the store headed for home.

At home, Connie has dinner ready for them. Andy puts the bags in the kitchen and goes to get the kids washed up. While she waits Connie starts putting the groceries away.

Theo comes back into the kitchen and starts rummaging through the bags, “Mom did you find my comic book? Dad got us treats for being good and I got 2 ‘cuz I helped.”

“I see that. I guess that explains this, huh?” She says as she holds up the cereal box.

“It’s supposed to be good for me Mom, the commercial said so.”

“Yeah, I’m sure it is. I’m going to have to make sure you and your dad don’t go shopping by yourselves anymore.” She smiles as she kisses the top of his head.

Andy and Michelle walk in at that moment and he sees the cereal box on the counter. “He was a big help so I thought he deserved a treat,” he shrugged. To appease Connie, “look he eats it for breakfast on school days only, that way we don’t have to see its effects. Okay?”

Shaking her head “that’s not the point and you know it.”

“Let’s eat, I’m starved.” He smiles as he settles Michelle in her high chair and sits down to eat.

Connie can’t stay upset with him. He was really doing a great job helping her more around the house with all the chores. Shopping trips, days at the park and long walks with the kids were his way of freeing her up to catch a break and relax. She sits down with a smile on her face and starts to eat.

After several minutes Theo asks. “Mom why do people kiss?”

Connie looks at him, “they kiss because they like each other.”

“Why do they kiss with their eyes closed and all close and stuff, like the way you and Dad kiss sometimes? Dad said we could talk about it when we got home.” Theo says looking at both his parents.

Connie looks at Andy briefly then continues. “Well Sweetheart, people who kiss like that really, really like each other or they love each other and they want to be real close.”

Theo looks thoughtfully at Connie, “when you kiss like that are you having sex?”

Andy and Connie both look at him, shocked but trying hard not to let it show. Andy asks first, “Theo what do you know about sex?”

Theo takes a drink of his milk and shrugs his shoulders. “I don’t know. Joey says whenever his mom and dad kiss they’re having sex. They go to their bedroom and lock their door, then he hears funny noises like they’re hurt or something.”

Connie and Andy look at each other and both are torn between wanting to laugh and not knowing what to say.

“Do you guys have sex when you kiss?” Theo asks casually.

Andy is stunned, and he swallows his food with great difficulty. This was a conversation he thought was still many years down the road. He’s not sure how to respond and quickly glances at Connie.

Connie can see the wheels spinning in Andy’s head as she reaches over and covers his hand with hers. They had discussed how they would handle “the talk” when the time came but neither of them were quite prepared for that time to be now. She squeezes his hand firmly and gives him a reassuring smile.

Andy wipes the sweat off his forehead with his napkin and takes a deep breath. “You see Theo people who love each other have sex so they can be close and feel good.”

“But Joey says his parents make noises like they’re hurt,” Theo says confused.

“You know how you make funny sounds and yell when you feel really good or get excited while your playing your video games? Well it’s kind of like that, sex makes you feel real good and you just can’t control yourself. But Theo when people have sex it’s a very personal thing and it’s very private.” Connie tells him.

“Then I better tell Joey to stop talking about it, huh Mom? But I still don’t get how kissing all close like that can make you feel good, it looks kinda gross.” Theo states firmly.

Connie laughs and rubs his shoulders. “One day you’ll understand Sweetie. One day.”

Theo starts telling them about his day as Andy and Connie smile at each other knowing they’d just dodged a bullet.

Connie quietly looks around the table at her family. Michelle and Theo were both growing up so fast and they were such good kids she still had a hard time believing they were hers now, and she had another one on the way. Rubbing her stomach she feels the baby shifting slightly and smiles. Her thoughts are sharply interrupted by the ringing of the telephone.

“I’ll get it!” Theo shouts as he makes for the phone.

“No, I’ll get it. You finish your beans.” She says firmly as Theo grumbles and plops himself back down in his chair.

“Hello? Mom! How are you? Is everything all right?” Connie’s smile slowly leaves her face as she listens to her mother. “Okay Mom this is sad I’m so sorry. I’ll call Aunt Peggy right after dinner. Don’t forget to call me once your plans are set. I love you Mom. No, no I’m sure he’ll understand, and anyway we’ll be seeing you soon so you’ll both get a chance to talk then. All right, Mom I’ll be waiting to hear from you. Bye.”

Andy watches Connie as she ends her call and asks. “What’s up?”

“My Uncle Mike passed away this afternoon. Mom called to tell me and let me know she’s coming to New York for the funeral. She plans on going straight to Saratoga Springs but she wants to make sure she spends some time with us before heading back to Florida.” Looking at Andy with tears in her eyes. “You remember my Uncle Mike Andy, he came down for Michelle’s funeral. He and my dad were so close you wouldn’t believe they weren’t blood brothers. Mom used to tell dad the only reason he married her was so that he could be related to Uncle Mike.” Smiling as she remembers, Connie shakes her head in disbelief. “I can’t believe he’s gone.”

Andy stands up and goes over to pull Connie into his arms. Holding her tight he asks quietly, “you all right?”

Theo gets up and hugs Connie too giving her his support. “It’s okay Mom.”

Wrapping one arm around Andy and the other around Theo she squeezes tight. “Thanks guys, I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

After a moment she calmly tells them, “let’s finish our dinner, there’s not much I can do now except wait until my mom calls back.”

As soon as he’s done eating Theo excuses himself from the table to finish up the last of his homework. Andy secures Michelle on the living room floor with her toys and then helps Connie to clean up.

As soon as they’re done Andy looks at her and asks. “Do you want to go with your mom?”

“What?” Connie asks, surprised.

“Do you want to go to Saratoga Springs with your mom? You should go if you feel up to it.”

“Andy I can’t leave you here alone with the kids… and what about work? I mean I’m trying to save as much of my leave as I can to use for after the baby’s born… and this isn’t a good time…”

“Connie, sshh.” Andy gently quiets her and cups her face in his hands. “We can’t ever predict when we’re going to lose someone we care for, so it’s never a good time. You should go. I’ll be fine with the kids for a few days and as far as work goes don’t worry, everything will be all right.”

“Andy are you sure? I know it’ll only be a few days but are you sure you’ll be all right?”

“Hey, it’ll be a trial run for when you deliver. If I survive we’re good to go, if I don’t, you’re going to have to have that baby at home.” He says smiling.

Laughing she hugs him and places a kiss on his lips. “I’m sure you’ll do so good you won’t even miss me.”

Hugging her back, “trust me Connie, you’ll be missed. This is the first time we’ll be apart since Theo and I moved in. I might end up camping out in the kids room so I don’t get lonely.”

“I love you Andy. I promise I won’t be gone any longer than I have to be and you should know, I’ll be just as lonely without you and the kids.” Kissing him once more before she heads to the phone “let me call my mom and let her know I’ll be going with her so we can synchronize our plans. Thank you Andy, for understanding.”

Andy watches as she picks up the phone and starts dialing. Figuring she’d be on with her mom for a while, he picks up Michelle and takes her in for her bath. Andy gets Michelle in the tub and starts soaping her up when Theo joins them in the bathroom. Sitting on the closed toilet lid he asks Andy about their plans for the weekend.

“Dad, will we still be able to go to the zoo tomorrow? Do you think mom will feel better by then?” He asks worried.

“Well Buddy, I’m not sure. Why don’t we play it by ear and see how tomorrow goes. Theo, you should know, Mom’s going with Grandma to Saratoga Springs and we need to pull together so Mom won’t worry about leaving us behind.”

Theo looks at Andy with concern. “How long will she be gone Dad?”

Andy sees the worried look on Theo’s face and quickly reassures him. “Just a few days Buddy, I promise. We need to be strong and give Mom our support Theo.”

Theo nods solemnly. “But she’s coming back right Dad?”

“Of course she’s coming back, this is her home.” Andy senses what Theo is really asking and adds, “she’s going to her uncle’s funeral and then she’ll come right home.”

“Okay.”

“Good. You want to take your bath now or in the morning?” Andy asks as he pulls the plug out of the drain and rinses both Michelle and the tub.

“Now dad, I’ll go get my stuff.” Theo runs out as Andy wraps Michelle in a towel and starts to dry her off.

“All fresh and clean Princess.” Andy can’t resist burying his face in her neck to tickle her with his moustache.

Michelle bursts into a fit of giggles and wraps her arms tight around Andy’s neck. “Kish Da” she says as she pulls on his hair. Andy pulls back and she plants a loud wet kiss on his cheek then a hard kiss on his lips.

Andy smiles and hugs her tight as they make their way to the kid’s room to get her dressed. Michelle is in a very playful mood and it takes Andy a while to get her diapered up and clothed. By the time he finally finishes Theo is back from his bath and laughing as Michelle rushes up to hug and kiss her brother.

“Dad what should we read tonight?” Theo asks going through his book collection.

“Whatever you like Sport. Why don’t we go lay on my bed so we can all get comfortable.”

After picking out the book he wants, Theo follows Andy and Michelle back to Andy’s bedroom. Stacking the pillows behind them, they settle down in bed and Andy starts reading one of the popular Harry Potter books. Theo is cuddled into his father’s side and Michelle has her head snuggled into Andy’s neck with her arms wrapped tightly around him as they listen intently to the story.

Meanwhile, Connie ends her phone conversation with her aunt and sighs as she sits back. All the arrangements had been made. Her mom’s flight would arrive at 10 in the morning then they would catch a train to Saratoga Springs around noon. Connie’s aunt assured her there would be someone at the station to pick them up and she had taken care of their accommodations. The funeral services were set for Monday and Connie and her mom would head back to New York Tuesday morning. Satisfied that everything was in order, Connie slowly gets up and heads in to check on Andy and the kids.

Walking into their bedroom she finds the three all comfortable in bed and decides to join them. Lying beside Theo she pulls him into her arms, and smiling, he settles into her embrace. Michelle is sound asleep and Connie reaches over to gently stroke her cheek as Andy continues reading. Two chapters later Andy hands the book over to Connie to take over so he can put Michelle down in her crib.

“Okay Sweetheart, just a couple more chapters then you have to head to bed too.” Connie smiles as he looks at her.

“Are you going with Grandma Mom?” he asks.

“Yeah tomorrow afternoon after we pick Grandma up at the airport she and I will take a train to Saratoga Springs.” Seeing the sheen of tears in Theo’s eyes she kisses his forehead and assures him. “We’ll be back on Tuesday and Grandma and I will pick you up from school, okay?”

“Four days? That’s a long time.” He lowers his head and whispers, “I’ll miss you a lot. Michelle and Dad will miss you too.”

Pushing up on his chin, she looks into his tear filled eyes. “I’ll miss you guys more you know. But I need to go Sweetie, this is important to me. You and Dad and Michelle will be together and the time will go by so fast you won’t even know I’m gone.”

“We’ll know Mom. Just make sure you come back, okay?”

“Theo, of course I’m coming back.” Concerned at his reaction to her leaving she decides to talk with Andy as soon as Theo is asleep.

After Theo had been tucked in for the night, Connie lets Andy know about her plans and he helps her to pack a small bag for her trip. She reminds him to call Andrea and explain the situation in case Andy gets tied up at work while she’s gone.

As she and Andy are lying in bed, Connie asks, “Andy are you sure I should go? Theo seems to be extra sensitive about the whole thing and I’m worried.”

“Don’t worry Connie. I think he’s just feeling a little separation anxiety. He’ll be fine, you need to go for you, and we’ll be fine.” He kisses her forehead and strokes her arms, comforting her.

“You don’t think it’s something more serious? I mean he never balks when he goes to stay at Joey’s.” She says still concerned.

“Connie, please don’t get yourself all worked up over this, he’ll be fine. When he goes to Joey’s he’s still in the same building and he’s the one going so he doesn’t think anything of it. This time you’re the one leaving and you’ll be several hours away, it’s a whole different story now. And like I mentioned earlier, this is the first time we’ll be apart since he and I moved in. He’ll be fine, promise.” Pulling her closer.

Andy lies there holding Connie as she falls asleep, wondering how he’s going to handle their first separation. Sleeping beside her, waking up with her every morning, just being together made him feel whole. The kids would keep his days busy but what about the nights… how could he possibly handle the nights? He falls asleep thinking how lonely and empty the nights would be without his lady, even for just a few days.

The next morning goes fairly smoothly as they all go to the airport to pick up Connie’s mom. Her flight arrives early which works to their advantage as they had hoped to spend some time visiting before catching their train. They decide to grab an early lunch at a diner near the train station and choose a quiet booth in the corner so they can have some privacy.

Connie excuses herself to go to the ladies room and as she walks away Jean takes Andy’s hand in hers and squeezes hard. “Andy, I can’t believe how wonderful Connie looks, she’s so beautiful. Thank you for making her so happy.” She dabs at a tear in her eye. “I always wondered when she’d find the right man and settle down, I can’t tell you how good it does my heart to see it finally happen.”

Andy smiles “Jean she’s made me the happiest guy around, you don’t have to thank me for loving her. I promise to keep her and the kids as safe and as happy as I possibly can.”

“You’re a good man Andy, exactly the kind of man I wanted for her.” She smiles.

“Grandma can we open our presents now?” Theo asks anxiously.

“If it’s all right with your Dad Sweetheart.” She says as she hugs him tight. “I can’t believe how much you’ve grown Theo, and Michelle is talking so much more now it’s amazing.”

Connie returns to the table and as she settles in next to Andy she looks at her mom “I can’t believe you got them presents Mom. When did you have the time between our call last night and your flight this morning to shop?”

“I’m a Grandma Connie, and Grandma’s always have presents ready for her babies. They are growing so fast, I still can’t get over it.” She reaches over to rub Theo’s shoulder then watches as Michelle drops her present to grab at Theo’s discarded wrapping paper.

“Jean you don’t have to give them gift’s all the time, you’ll end up spoiling them.” Andy smiles as he helps Michelle to open her gift.

“That’s my job Andy and they are such fun to spoil.”

“Thanks Grandma these are so cool! Look Mom and Dad Grandma got me a Harry Potter game and a new Baseball game for my PlayStation. I love it Grandma thank you.” Theo kisses her and gives her a big hug before sitting back to admire his new games.

Andy opens Michelle’s gift and Michelle is clapping excitedly as she sees a pair of Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls. “Baby!” Michelle shouts, as she grabs them from him and hugs them close loving her treasures.

“Mom that’s too much, I happen to know how pricey those games get and these dolls they’re so beautiful.” Connie scolds lightly.

“Jean thank you for these but Connie’s right you shouldn’t have.” Andy adds.

“Now don’t say anything more, both of you. Please understand, these are my only grandchildren… for now, and even when the baby comes I’m going to keep spoiling them… all three of them. It’s my job and I love it.”

They all sit back to enjoy their short time together and even manage to squeeze in a light snack before finally heading over to the train station. Thankfully it isn’t very busy and they have a few quiet moments to say their goodbyes. Theo suddenly grows very quiet and refuses to look up as Connie calls to him.

“Sweetheart we have to board so give me a big hug and a kiss.” Connie calls to him.

Theo runs to her, grabs her in a tight embrace and whispers into her hair tearfully. “I’m going to miss you Mom.”

“I’m going to miss you more Sweetie, but I’ll be back before you know it. Promise.” Connie tells him, struggling to keep her tears in check.

Andy gently pulls Theo back and gives Michelle over for her to say her goodbyes. Andy and Theo kiss and hug Jean and after handing Michelle over to Jean Connie hugs Andy tight.

“I love you Andy, don’t miss me too much okay?” She smiles.

“Too late, I miss you already.” He whispers into her ear before kissing her lips lightly. Hugging her tight once more, he releases her and takes Michelle from Jean as they make to board.

Theo’s eyes are tear-filled and his lips are quivering as he bravely stands beside his Dad and waves goodbye. They board as the last call is announced and quickly find some seats. Looking out she sees Andy wave once more then watches as they turn to leave. Her tears flowing freely now, she lets herself be pulled into her mother’s arms “I’m sorry Mom, I know I’m being silly but I’m going to miss them.”

“Honey you don’t have to go, I’m sure Aunt Peggy will understand.”

“No Mom I want to do this. I want to say goodbye to Uncle Mike, it’s just so hard to go.” Smiling as she wipes at her eyes “this is our first separation and it’s hard, but I’ll be fine. Really Mom, don’t worry.”

45 minutes into their trip Connie returns to her seat after her third trip to the restroom, plopping herself down next to her mother she sighs. “I feel like I should just stay in the bathroom and save myself the trouble.” Catching her mom staring at her she looks up and asks, “what’s wrong?”

Looking at Connie seriously she takes one of her hands in her own “nothing’s wrong, I just can’t believe how beautiful you are and how happy you look.”

“I’m very happy Mom.” Squeezing her hand. “Are you sure there’s not something else on your mind?”

“Connie, I know we’ve made our peace over the past… your pregnancy and the adoption and all, but after seeing you with Andy and the kids I need to say this to you. I had a lot of regret for how your father and I handled that whole situation and when the doctor told us about your supposed infertility I felt so guilty. I thought it was my punishment for not being a better mother…”

“Mom” Connie quickly interrupts “we’ve been all through this, it’s over and it’s done.”

“Please Connie, let me say this, it’s important for me to make you understand. I blamed myself for a long time, I know it sounds crazy but it’s what mom’s do. Things go wrong and we automatically think we could have prevented it but in time we learn. You’re just starting honey and I want you to remember to just love your kids as much as you can and when things happen, good and bad, stand by them and love them. Don’t condemn them for their mistakes remember the ones you made growing up. As a parent you want to keep your kids from making the same mistakes you made and sometimes you can, but when you can’t, when they have to fall on their own, be there with your arms open wide. Pick them up, wipe them off and love them. For the rest of their lives you will be their mother, through their successes and failures they will always be your children and nothing they do will ever change that. Don’t let a day go by without saying “I love you.”

Pausing to take a deep breath she continues shakily. “When we had that rift it broke my heart. All I could think of was how much I loved you and how seldom I had told you. You’re a parent Connie and you know that there is nothing your kids will ever do that will stop you loving them. Make sure they know that, make sure they feel that. As happy as I was that you and your dad were starting to talk again before he died, I still cry over all the wasted years of anger and silence between you. I pray that you… and Andy are better parents for your kids.”

“Mom, you and Dad were great parents! I was just a hardheaded teenager who thought she knew better and learned the hard way that she didn’t. I wish I could take back all those years we spent apart too Mom but I can’t and I’m just very thankful that Dad and I were getting along when he died. It still hurts when I think about it, but I do understand what you’re saying Mom and I’ll make sure I’m always there for my kids, no matter what. Andy and I will both be there.” She pulls her mom towards her and hugs her tight. The baby chooses that moment to start kicking and Connie’s mom pulls back and lovingly rubs her belly.

“This baby is trying to tell us something I think.” She smiles. “He probably doesn’t like all this crying and re-hashing of bad memories.”

Reaching up to wipe at her mom’s tears “I love you Mom. Thank you so much for everything.”

“I love you too.” Opening her purse she pulls out another tissue and wipes her eyes. “I’m just thankful that you’re so happy and I wanted to make sure you understood how I feel.”

“I do Mom and I’m very happy.” Connie hugs her mom as they sit back and talk about the kids and potential baby names.

Back in the city…

Andy and the kids are strolling through the Brooklyn zoo. The mood is somber and none of them seem to have any interest in the sights, even Michelle who would normally be begging to touch the animals is quiet.

“Dad what time is it?” Theo asks.

“It’s 1:30, you got a date or something?”

“Is Mom in Saratoga Springs yet? Can we call her yet?” He asks anxiously.

Andy looks at Theo “she’s probably just getting in Buddy, and she said she’d call once she got settled.” Trying to calm his anxiety “tell you what. Why don’t we go get some videos and some snacks and we’ll head home to make sure we catch Mom’s call, okay?”

Perking up, he nods. “Okay Dad, I don’t want Mom worrying if she calls and we’re not home.”

Later, at the Sipowicz apartment, Andy orders a pizza for dinner and prepares some macaroni and cheese for Michelle. As a treat he rearranges the furniture in the living room and the three set up camp in front of the TV. While they argue over which movie to watch first the phone rings and Theo quickly runs to answer it.

“Mom?” He asks excitedly. “Dad its Mom! Mom we miss you, do you miss us? You should see what Dad did, he moved all the furniture and we’re going to campout in the living room ‘til you come home! It’s cool Mom! Maybe we can campout when you come home so you can try too. Mom…”

“Hey there Buddy, give Mom a chance to talk.” Andy laughs as he gently tugs on his arm.

Picking up on Theo’s excitement Michelle shouts “Mama!”

“Yeah Princess, Mama’s on the phone. You want to say hi?” He pulls her onto his lap and waits patiently as Theo and Connie talk.

“Wow Sweetheart, it sounds like you guys are having a good time. Did Dad take you to the zoo?” Listening to Theo makes Connie feel so homesick and she hasn’t even been gone an entire day.

“Yeah we went to the zoo but it wasn’t any fun so we got some videos and snacks and Dad ordered pizza for dinner.” Quieting considerably “but I wish you were here Mom, it’s not the same without you.”

“I miss you too Sweetie, very much, but remember it’s only for a few days then I’ll be home with you where I belong. I love you Theo.”

“Okay Mom, I love you too. You want to talk to Dad? He’s right here, bye.” He hands the phone to Andy.

“Hey, I guess you got there all right. How you feeling?” He asks.

“Yeah the trip was pretty smooth, except that I spent most of the time in the bathroom. So you guys seem to be getting along without me,” she teases.

“Don’t you believe it Connie, I figured if we make a big enough mess for you to find when you get home, you won’t ever want to leave again.” He smiles as he hears her laugh.

“Don’t worry I miss you guys so much I won’t be doing this again except to have this baby. How’s Michelle? I bet she doesn’t even know I’m gone.”

“First thing she did when we got home was run into our room looking for her Mama. She’s here, say something to her.” Andy holds the phone to Michelle’s ear and as she hears Connie’s voice she smiles at Andy saying, “Mama.”

“Believe me now?” He asks as he continues his conversation with Connie. “How’s your Aunt doing? Make sure you let her know I’m sorry I can’t be there.”

“She’s fine and she understands. I’ve got to go now Andy they’re ready to take my Mom and me over to the funeral home. I really miss you and the kids, if it’s not too late I’ll call again later, all right?”

“If you’re up to it. We miss you too, a lot. I’m taking Joey and Theo to the movies tomorrow so we’ll be out most of the afternoon. Call when you have a chance. I love you, bye.” After hearing her good-bye he hangs up slowly. Looking at Theo and Michelle he smiles “who’s hungry?”

Sunday without Connie went a little better. Andy took Theo, Joey and Michelle to breakfast before dropping her off at Andrea’s on their way to the movies. Andrea was nice enough to make dinner for them after their show and they had a real good time with her and her husband. It was early evening by the time Andy and the kids finally made it home. The kids were both pretty worn out, and after their baths they didn’t put up much of a fuss when he tucked them in for the night.

Since it wasn’t even 9:00 Andy decided to clean up a bit in case he didn’t get a chance the next day. He was just finishing up when the phone rang. “Hello? Hey, I was just waiting to hear from you. How’d it go today?”

“All right. There was a small memorial service at their parish church and then we went to my cousin Pat’s house for a late lunch. I got home a while ago but I was so pooped I ended up taking a nap. Are you getting the kids ready for bed?”

“Nope they’re out already. We had a pretty eventful day and they were exhausted by the time we got home so they knocked out quick.”

Teasing, “it’s just you and me, so what are you wearing?”

Connie laughs as she lies back on her bed. “Andy Sipowicz I’m shocked! I never pictured you as the kind of guy who was into phone sex.”

“I can get into anything with the right partner. By the way, your mom ain’t nearby is she?” He worries.

“Now you think of that? You’re crazy Sipowicz. My mom and Aunt Peggy are downstairs talking and she probably won’t be up for a while, they’ve been doing a lot of reminiscing. I miss you so much. I don’t like not having you beside me in bed when I fall asleep, or waking up without you. Damn it Andy I need you.”

“It’s the same for me Connie. You’ve ruined me, are you happy? I’m not worth a damn without you, if it weren’t for the kids I’d have dropped everything, hopped on a train and we’d be together right now.” Laughing, “ listen to us, we sound like two horny lovesick teenagers. Geez Connie, you haven’t been gone that long and we’re acting like you’ve been gone a month.”

“It feels like it to me. So, want to explore this phone sex thing and see how we like it?”

“I don’t think we should. I’m getting excited just thinking about you and I’m too old to be jerking off in the bathroom.” He sighs in frustration.

“Tell you what, you keep that excitement on simmer and I promise to screw your brains out when I get home.”

“Yeah, you’re all talk Connie. How much screwing are we gonna be doing with your mom in the house, huh?” He laughs as he hears her cuss and he can’t help teasing some more. “I was even thinking of sleeping on the pullout and having her sleep with you in our room so you can spend more time together before she heads home.”

“Don’t even think about getting away from me Sipowicz. I’ll find a way Andy trust me, as horny as I’ve been lately no one, not even my mom could keep me from making love with my husband.” Irritated at hearing his laughter. “Unless you’re tired of making love with me, I mean I’m fat and I look like a whale…”

“Connie stop. I’m only teasing and you know it. I think you’re beautiful and if you remember I did have a hand in your present condition.”

“Yes you did! This is entirely your fault and I love you for that. Well, since you won’t play naughty games with me I guess I should go downstairs and find something to eat, suddenly I’m starving.”

“All right go and eat and I’ll talk to you tomorrow. I know Theo will be sad he missed talking with you tonight, you think it would be okay to call you early tomorrow so he can say hi before he heads to school?”

“Definitely. We won’t be heading to the cemetery ‘til about 8:30 so call whenever you can, I’m sure we’ll all be up.”

“I will. I love you and miss you. Dream of me okay?”

“I do. I love you too. Two more days Andy, rest up.” She laughs as she hears his laughter.

“Count on it! Goodnight.” Smiling he ends the call.

The next morning turns out to be a little more hectic than Andy had anticipated. Michelle wanted to play and he ended up chasing her around the apartment just to get her dressed. Theo insisted on eating his new cereal instead of the oatmeal Andy had already fixed and the argument ate up a lot time and Andy’s patience. By the time Andy got around to calling Connie only Theo got to talk to her and then they had to head out.

Andy arrives at the station house miraculously with a few minutes to spare and after advising PAA John of Connie’s absence for the next few days he heads to the coffee room for a much needed cup of coffee. Heading back to his desk he meets up with Jr. as he’s walking in.

“Morning partner. How was your weekend?” Jr. asks with a smile. Looking around “where’s Connie?”

Andy briefs him on his weekend and as Jr. starts the blow by blow of his activities Lt. Rodriguez calls them into his office.

“What’s up Boss?” Jr. asks as he and Andy enter the Lt.’s office.

“We got a call from Bellevue, a 10 year old kid was brought in with a knife wound about an hour ago. The kid is in stable condition but he won’t say how it happened and no one knows how to find his parents.”

“Who brought the kid in?” Andy asks.

“Not sure. You two need to get over there and sort this out.” As they leave, “oh Andy, sorry to hear about Connie’s uncle. How’s she doing?”

“She’s all right. The funeral is today and she’s coming back sometime tomorrow. I’ll let you know when she’ll be back to work.”

“Tell her to take her time, we’ll be fine. Make sure to keep me updated on your case.” He says as Andy leaves.

At Bellevue ER…

Andy and Jr. walk up to the nurses station and ask to speak to someone regarding the 10-year-old stabbing victim. A nurse directs them to Doctor Mathers, who updates them on the child’s condition and takes them to speak to him.

“All we got for a name is Kale. The guy who brought him in looked like some sort of gang member, maybe a Crip, but don’t quote me.” Dr. Mathers tells them.

“He just dumped the kid and left? Nothing else?” Jr. asks.

“Just said ‘he’s your problem now’ and left. He also said ‘later Kale’ as he walked out and that’s how we got the first name. Kid hasn’t said a word since he’s been here either so we don’t know a thing. I’m going to admit him overnight so I can keep an eye on his wound but by tomorrow he’ll be able to go home. Problem is no one knows where home is.”

“Thanks doc, we appreciate your help. Let us know if you hear anything.” Andy hands him one of his cards as the doctor leaves them by the curtained area where Kale is resting.

Pushing the curtain back Andy and Jr. see a young black boy laying on the hospital gurney studying the IV line in his arm.

“Hey there Kale, I’m Detective Sipowicz and this is my partner Detective Clark. We’re here to ask you some questions.” Kale looks at them with hostility then turns away ignoring them. Andy looks at Jr. before continuing. “Can you tell us who did this to you?”

Silence.

“We would really like to help you Kale but you need to tell us what happened.” Jr. adds.

More silence.

“Okay Kale if you don’t want to tell us what happened, how about you tell us how to get a hold of your parents so we can talk to them. Can you at least do that?” Andy asks and notices a slight twitch in Kale’s neck. “Or maybe it was your parents who did this to you. Is that it kid? If that’s the case we can help you so they won’t ever hurt you again. Just tell us and we can do something.” Now Andy notices his fists clenching and his body stiffening. “Or don’t tell us and go back to those same people who hurt you.”

He turns and glares at Andy. “You cops are all full of shit! You always say you’re gonna help me then nothing happens. I’m still living with Berna and she’s still making me do whatever she wants ‘cuz no one cares. So just leave me alone! Take all your help and shove it up your ass!” Crying he turns away.

Andy and Jr. are shocked. This kid was so young, yet he had so much anger. Quietly Andy signals for Jr. to follow him outside.

“Jr. call Child Welfare and see if anyone there has dealt with Kale. I know it’ll be hard without a last name but Kale is a pretty unique name so we might get lucky. Also throw in the name Berna someone might be able to make a connection off that. I’m gonna stay here and try to see if I can get anymore out of this kid.” Andy looks at the curtain sadly. “This kid is about Theo’s age. What kind of animals could his parents be John?”

“I don’t know Andy but no kid deserves to suffer. I’ll get right on it.” Jr. looks at Andy worried. “You all right partner?”

“Yeah, just hate when kids are involved is all. Go ahead I’ll be here.”

Returning to Kale’s bedside, Andy pulls a chair and sits down. He’s not sure what to say so he sits quietly for a while until he notices Kale watching him.

“Why are you still here man? I told you to go away, so just go.” He says with less bite. “You can’t help me. No one can. No one ever does.”

Calmly Andy speaks. “I’ve got a son about your age. He plays baseball, he’s into video games and he loves Harry Potter. I guess he’s pretty normal for his age and I gotta tell you Kale, I would do everything I could to keep him safe. I would kill myself before I’d ever hurt him. There are lots of people out there who have kids but not all of them are wired up right in their heads, that’s why they hurt their kids or don’t try to keep them safe.” Pausing, Andy looks up and notices Kale crying openly and staring at him with such desperation it breaks his heart… it makes him want to kill the people who put that look in his eyes.

“I can’t tell you why no one was able to help you before son, but I promise that if you talk to me and tell me what happened I’m going to do everything I can to get you the help you need.” Then looking straight into Kale’s eyes he adds, “and I keep my promises.”

Kale breaks down, sobbing and Andy gets up to sit by him and rub his shoulders. He looks at this child realizing how much he must have suffered in his short life and it humbles him. Several minutes later as his sobbing subsides Andy quietly asks. “You all right? Want me to get you some water or something?”

“I’m kinda hungry, could you ask the nurse if she still has that donut she tried to give me before?” He asks as he wipes at his face with the bed sheet.

Andy smiles and winks “how about I see about getting you something more filling, a growing boy needs more than just a donut.”

Andy goes to the nurse’s station and arranges for a meal tray and one of the nurse’s gives him some juice and milk to tide Kale over ‘til his food arrives.

“Done” Andy announces as he walks back to Kale’s bed with his goodies. “This is from one of the nurses out there, it should hold you while we wait for your food.”

Kale quickly downs the milk and juice as if he were starving.

“When was the last time you had anything to eat kid?”

“Don’t remember. Yesterday I pretty much hung out at the arcade on 2nd, just to stay out of Berna’s way.” He looks at Andy nervously still not sure if he could be trusted.

“Well, tell you what, if you are still hungry after they bring your meal I’ll run down to the cafeteria and get you a burger and some fries. Okay?”

“Deal!” He says with the excitement a kid his age should have.

“So Kale, you ready to tell me what happened? How did you get stabbed and who did it?” Andy sits down in the chair and notices the look of fear return.

“Detective Sip… sorry I don’t remember what your whole name is.”

“Sipowicz” Andy supplies. “It’s a mouthful, don’t worry about it.”

“Sipowicz. Detective Sipowicz. You promise I won’t have to go back to Berna’s? I won’t have to do no more bad stuff?” He begs.

“I promise.” Andy states simply.

Still wary, “she says I’ll always end up going back to her ‘cuz I don’t got no family except her. What if she’s right?”

Patiently Andy assures him, “Kale look, if Berna’s been hurting you or making you do bad things then we’ll take you away from her and put you somewhere safe. I know some people at Child Welfare and I’ll do everything in my power to make sure you get taken care of. Okay?”

“I don’t know… so far every time I run away Berna always finds me. She knows a lot of people, ‘specially bad people.”

“Tell you what, how about you start by telling me your full name.”

“Kale Edward Vence” he states proudly.

“Good. That’s good, well Kale Vence I’m Andy Sipowicz, glad to meet you.” He holds his hand out to shake his.

Giggling Kale reaches out and shakes his hand. “I already know you remember? We’ve been talking.”

Ruffling Kale’s hair he laughs, “but now I know your whole name and you know mine so that makes us friends.”

A nurse walks in at that moment with his meal tray and a styrofoam container. Setting it down in front of Kale she winks and whispers loud to both of them. “You look like you’re a good eater young man so I brought you an extra helping of meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Make sure you eat it all up.” She leaves the room smiling.

“Oh boy! I love meatloaf!” He lifts the lids off his plates and digs in. As he eats, Andy steps out to find Jr.

Jr. is ending his call with someone at the Child Welfare dept. as Andy approaches. “Hey I got his full name.” Andy informs him.

“Yeah so do I. Kale Vence, born April 26, 1994. His mom died last year and they got no info on his dad. His aunt Berna Vence is his only family, she took custody of him last November.”

“So obviously, they knew of him? What’s the story there?”

Jr. looks at Andy angrily. “You won’t believe this Andy but they’ve gotten over 20 complaints from numerous people on how bad this Berna treats the kid but the case worker insists they were unsubstantiated. Apparently every time they went out to investigate, this Berna always came out clean.” Jr. walks away then turns “dammit Andy no wonder this kid doesn’t believe us.”

“Jr. relax, come on now, take a deep breath and calm down.” Andy tells him. “ I think he’ll talk to us, at least I hope he will. He seems to want to trust me but he’s been disappointed so much before he’s not so easy to win over.” Andy rubs his head and paces back and forth before continuing. “Let’s go back and see if he’s ready to talk some now that he’s got a full belly. Poor kid hasn’t eaten in a while.”

By the time Jr. and Andy walk back to Kale’s bed he’s wiped out all his food.

“So, you still hungry?” Andy asks with a smile.

“No, I’m good.” Looking at both Andy and Jr., sizing them up. “Detective Sipowicz said I could trust him, can I trust you too?” He asks Jr. seriously.

“You sure can. Detective Sipowicz and I are both going to make sure you don’t have to go back to live with your aunt. Kale, once you tell us what happened to you we can get the ball rolling and find a safe place for you to stay.”

“Remember, you both promised.” He says with a quiet resignation. Taking a deep breath “Aunt Berna cut me. She was mad at me because I wouldn’t go with her friend Max. Max is this real scary guy who comes around a lot and he smells bad and he looks at me all the time, real creepy like.” He stops and looks at the empty plates in front of him.

Andy waits a moment then asks, “where was Max going to take you?”

Slowly the tears slide down his cheeks. “Into Aunt Berna’s bedroom. She gets money from the men who come to see her and sometimes they want to give me money too but I don’t like doing what they ask me to do.”

“I know this is hard Kale, but you need to tell us what they do to you.” Jr. tells him as he rubs his shoulder.

Looking at Andy his tears flow faster as he bravely continues. “They try to touch me places they’re not supposed to and then they try to make me touch them and I hate it. Usually I run away before they can make do it, then Berna finds me and beats me. But last night Aunt Berna was holding me down so Max could touch me. I was fighting and screaming then I kicked Max in the face and his mouth was bleeding. He got mad and started yelling nasty things at me, then he took his money from Aunt Berna’s bag and left. When I tried to run out she took a knife and started telling me I was no good then she cut me.”

All three sit quietly for a moment. Andy and Jr. keep their anger and disgust for this Berna in check so as not to scare Kale.

“You did good Kale. You’re a very brave young man and we’re going to need you to keep being brave all right? I know how hard it was for you to tell us what happened but you’re going to have to tell a few more people and the doctor’s are going to have to examine you again, but in a different way. It’s going to be kind of scary but all this is going to help us get you away from Berna, understand?” Andy squeezes his shoulder as he talks, comforting him.

“I guess. You promise I’m not going back there right?” He grabs Andy’s arm desperately.

“Promise. Now John and I are going to make some calls and tell the doctor to start his examination. We’ll be right out there so we’ll hear if you call for us. Don’t forget to be strong.” With a wink and another squeeze he re-assures Kale as they leave.

One hour later a social worker from Child Welfare arrives and with Andy and Jr. by his side Kale repeats his story. The doctor locates Kale’s previous medical records and finds evidence of 8 visits to the ER in the past 3 months. Off of all the findings and his statement, the social worker officially takes Kale into custody and he is placed in a room under protective custody. After saying their good-byes and promising to visit him again later they leave.

Lt. Rodriguez had already been working the case on his end and Greg and Baldwin were heading back to the precinct with Berna Vence.  Andy and Jr. are still pretty worked up from their time with Kale and when they get back to the house they decide to talk to the Lt. about their upcoming interview with Berna.

Rodriguez watches as Andy and Jr. walk into his office and shut the door behind them. For several seconds they all just look at each other thinking, mulling over the whole Kale situation. Finally Jr. breaks the silence. “Well what’s the plan? I’m so pissed off at this Berna right now… I tell you Boss if you saw the fear in this kid’s eyes whenever he said her name…”

“I’d like a shot at her just so I could see the look in her eyes when she realizes she’s not going to be able to get out of this jackpot.” Andy says with tempered anger.

“It’s your call. I know how angry you both are but I trust that you can handle yourselves. Got anything on this Max guy?” Rodriguez asks.

“He’s Max Fletcher, did 8 years at Sing Sing for assaulting his wife. He’s been out a year, his PO gave us his address but he wasn’t home and he called in sick at work so we’re just waiting for him to show up somewhere.” Jr. tells the Lt.

20 minutes later Greg and Baldwin arrive with Berna Vence. They put her in the Pokey room and head into the squad to talk with Andy and Jr.

They enter the squad and Jr. asks “any hits off this Berna?”

“She’s a real hard-ass this Berna.” Baldwin informs him.

“Bitch is more like it partner. We show up and after striking out with Baldwin she starts cussing and telling us about this John she has who’s a lawyer… and so on. Bitch is what she is.” Greg says with disgust.

The four discuss the case a bit then Jr. and Andy head to the Pokey to interrogate Berna.

In the Pokey they walk in to find Berna sitting quietly. Andy chooses to sit directly across from her and Jr. stands behind him.

“So you going to tell me why I’m here or just stare at me,” she asks after a few seconds.

“Come on Berna, you know exactly why you’re here so cut the bull.” Jr. tells her. “Did you really think you could keep hurting Kale indefinitely?”

Berna glares at Jr. as she asks, “what’s that brat been telling you? He’s been nothing but trouble since I got him, always telling lies and making up stories… I’m sick and tired of having to deal with you cops and those fuckin’ Child Welfare people. Just take the damn kid… he’s nothin’ but a fuckin’ piece of shit anyway.”

Andy jumps out of his chair and leans across the table putting his face right up close to hers. “You’re lucky you’re not a man Berna because if you were I’d slap you right out of that chair. You are the piece of shit. You try to sell that poor kid to your John’s then you stab him when he doesn’t do what you want, and don’t forget all the other things you’ve done to that kid in the short time he’s been with you. I’d like to make you suffer, I’d like to see you as scared for your life as Kale is.”

Leaning back “I didn’t do any of those things… I’m telling you the kid lies all the time. He hangs out with some gang, that’s how he gets hurt… I never touched him!”

“You’re the liar Berna, and all your lies and all the pain you’ve been inflicting on Kale ends now. What you need to start thinking about is how to help yourself.” Jr. spits out angrily.

“What the hell do you mean help myself? Why do I need help?”

Sitting back down Andy looks at her. “Berna, you can’t possibly be that stupid? You’re going to jail for a very long time. Child endangerment, child abuse, child prostitution… you starting to get the picture?”

“What the fuck? I didn’t do none of that! Get me a lawyer! Right now get me a lawyer before you guys try to screw me some more!” She yells.

Jr. pulls her up out of the chair and puts her in the cage. “Yeah Berna you’re gonna need a lawyer. You wait here while we go scrounge one up for you… and one more thing Berna, not that you care, but Kale is in protective custody now and he sure as hell won’t ever have to be scared of you anymore.”

Leaving her to her ranting they head back to the squad room. Late that afternoon ADA Haywood finishes up with Berna and her lawyer and fills Andy and Jr. in on the details.

“She gave us the names of several of her customers who molested Kale in exchange for dropping some of the lesser charges. But she’s still got the big ones hanging over her head and I promise you she’s going away for a long time.”

“And these guys she gave us what are they looking at time wise?” Jr. asks.

“Depends… I can’t make any promises John, but as far as Max Fletcher goes he’s going back to finish up his previous sentence and then some… that I’m sure of.” Valerie vows.

“Good, when we tell Kale he’s safe now we want to mean it.” Andy says with relief.

“He’s safe from Berna now that’s for sure. Are you working with his case worker for temporary foster care?” Valerie asks Andy and Jr.

“He’s staying in the hospital at least through tomorrow, by then Child Welfare hopes to have a place set up for him. He’s a good kid, even after all the crap he’s gone through we’re hoping for the best.” Jr. tells her.

Looking at his watch Andy signals to Jr. “we gotta go John, the kids have to picked up by 5:30. Thanks Valerie, we appreciate all your help.”

Back at Bellevue Andy and Jr. tell a very relieved Kale that he was free of Berna for good. Kale sits and chats comfortably with the two detectives for a while and he even tells them a little about his mom. Regrettably Andy has to leave to get the kids, but not before promising to check-in on Kale and see him again in the morning. Jr. decides to hang around and keep Kale company for a while before heading home.

Andy gets the kids from the sitter and picks up some burgers and fries for dinner. At home the empty feeling Andy has been harboring hits him full force. I’m acting like a damn kid he thinks to himself I can’t believe how much I miss her, its driving me crazy. He watches Theo and Michelle dig into their dinner with gusto as he picks at his without any enthusiasm. One more day Sipowicz and then she’ll be home and you can stop moping around like some pitiful puppy dog.

“Dad,” Theo tugs on Andy’s arm shaking out of his daze. “When can we call Mom?”

“She said she’d call us Buddy, with all her family being around today she wasn’t sure what time she’d make it back to her aunt’s house.” Noticing their empty plates Andy gets up to clear the mess. “Did you finish your homework?”

“Yep.” Theo says as he helps Michelle out of her chair.

“Then why don’t we get you two all cleaned up so after mom calls you can go right to bed, okay?”

“Okay, Michelle first or me?”

“I’ll do Michelle first. You can play your video games while you wait your turn.”

“Cool!” He shouts as he runs to his room.

“Well Princess it’s bath time.” He smiles as he leads her into the bathroom.

“Baf Da!”  She claps her hands as Andy starts filling the tub.

Andy starts laughing as he watches her start pulling off her clothes and getting all caught up in them. “Here let me, your just such a little helper aren’t you.”

“Baf!” She cries out happily.

One hour later both kids are clean and dressed for bed. Andy picks up the Harry Potter book they had been reading before and takes the kids into his room to read as they wait for Connie’s call. Stretched out in bed Andy lays on his side with Michelle leaning on him as Theo reads aloud.

This is the way Connie finds them as she yells “surprise” from the bedroom door.

“Mom!” Theo shouts as he runs up to her wrapping his arms around her big belly.

“Mama!” Michelle stands up in bed and starts jumping excitedly holding her arms open wide to Connie.

Andy can’t believe his eyes, “hey stranger welcome home.” He quickly gets over his shock and grabs Michelle as he heads over to grab Connie in a tight hug. “We missed you, a lot.” He says before giving her a kiss then burying his face in her neck inhaling deeply.

“Bet I missed you guys more.” She whispers into his neck.

“Not that I’m complaining, but what brought you home early?” Looking down the hallway “where’s your mom?”

“You better not be complaining,” she teases. “My mom wanted to stay a few more days for Aunt Peggy and there was no way I could stand being gone from you guys any longer so… since I didn’t have to stay ‘til tomorrow… I caught a train and here I am. Happy?”

“We’re very happy Mom! We missed you soooo much! Right Dad? We don’t want you to go away anymore, okay Mom?”

“Okay. I missed you sooo much too, you know.” She hugs and kisses Michelle then Theo and smiles at Andy. Giving in to the urge she reaches up and pulls Andy’s mouth down to hers and gives him a deep breathtaking kiss. They reluctantly pull apart but the promise of a proper ‘welcome home’ later, is in both their eyes.

Connie sits on the edge of the bed with Michelle in her lap and Theo pressed tightly to her side as she listens to every detail of their weekend. Andy goes out bring her overnight bag in from the front door and he secures the apartment for the night before heading back to their bedroom.

“I’m going to take a shower while you guys catch up,” he tells them.

“Okay,” she smiles at him.

By the time Andy is all showered and shaved Connie and the kids have moved to the kid’s room and he watches as she is reading to them.

“Hey, want me to take over so you can relax a little? You must be exhausted after all you’ve been through today.”

“Actually I feel a lot better now that I’m home, but I would like to take a shower.” Kissing Michelle and hugging her tight she says goodnight and does the same with Theo. “See you in the morning Sweetheart, sleep tight.”

“Love you Mom. Thanks for coming back early we really missed you.” Theo hugs her tight once more before settling back in his bed.

“I love you too, goodnight.”

Andy reads to the kids for another 45 minutes before they finally fall asleep. Tucking them in again and giving them each a kiss he quietly leaves their room and heads to his room. As he walks into their bedroom, he sees Connie combing her hair and he closes and locks the door behind him.

“They finally fall asleep?” She asks as he approaches her.

He doesn’t say a thing as he grabs her from behind and pulls her into his tight embrace. He rubs her belly lovingly and leans down to kiss her neck and nibble on her ear. She rubs her bottom into his crotch and he groans as she reaches her arms behind her and grabs his ass squeezing, caressing and pulling him closer. Andy cups her chin and turns her head so that he can capture her lips in a deep open-mouthed kiss that has her moaning into his mouth. They kiss like a couple reuniting after months apart and by the time they pull apart both are gasping for breath.

“I missed you so much Connie.” He groans.

“I can feel exactly how much you missed me Andy.” Opening her robe, she takes his hand she puts it between her legs pushing his fingers between her moist hot lips. “I missed you too, can you feel how much?” She whispers into his ear and gasps as his fingers finally make contact with her sensitive nub.

“You’re so wet…” turning her slightly he removes his hand only long enough to remove her robe and his clothes before pushing her down on the edge of the bed. “Damn Connie I want you so bad it hurts. This is going to have to be fast.”

Lying back, she reaches down and grabbing his penis, guides him between her open legs. “Andy I’ve had over two days of foreplay all I need is you now!”

Needing no more encouragement, he buries himself deep inside her pausing a moment to revel in the feel of her tight heat. Connie has other plans though as she lifts her hips and wraps her legs around him pushing his shaft even deeper. He inhales sharply caught up in the extreme pleasure of being so deep inside her that he loses the battle for control and begins thrusting. Leaning down he places open-mouthed kisses on her neck and shoulder before finally pulling her nipple into his mouth and sucking hard.

Connie cries out into his shoulder as she feels her orgasm rush through her body. She pulls his head into her breast wanting him to suckle harder. She wraps her legs tighter around his waist needing him buried deeper as her orgasm totally consumes her. Andy doesn’t last much longer caught up in the sensation of her body milking his… he climaxes holding her tight never wanting to let go. Many, many minutes later, when they’re breathing starts to return to normal Andy slowly rolls to his side and looks deep into her eyes.

“Sorry I lacked my usual finesse there… I guess I was just running on pure lust.” He tells her as he reaches to push her hair back behind her ear and stroke her cheek.

“Do you hear me complaining? It excites me that I can make you lose control. Lord knows I don’t seem to have any where you’re concerned.” She turns slightly to lick at his shoulder, tasting the saltiness of his skin she sucks gently, smiling at the light red mark she leaves behind. “Sorry, you just taste so good.”

Seeing the teasing look in her eyes he kisses her lips with light feather soft nips and with his hand he starts rubbing up and down her body in a light, massaging caress.

“Well that took some of the edge off… you up for another round?” She smiles.

“Sure, but I’m going to need a little more recovery time… come here.” He slides himself up towards the head of the bed arranging the pillows under him and pulls her into his arms, sighing with pure pleasure as she throws her leg over his and cuddles into his side. He rubs her stomach “did this guy behave for mama?”

“He was good but we were very, very homesick. I know we’re both going to sleep much better now that we’re home.” She hugs Andy tight, needing the strength and warmth of him, having missed it these past few nights.

“How was the funeral?”

“As fine as those go I guess. How was your day?” Connie asks as she looks at him.

“We had rough case, this kid was being abused by his aunt. Real sad, but the kid finally helped us out and his aunt’s going away for a long time. He’s Theo’s age and his caseworker promised to try to get him placed with a foster family. I don’t want him going to no group home, a place like that would break his spirit.”

Connie smiles “you are such a softie Sipowicz. This boy must have really hit a nerve in you.”

“He did. I look at him and I see Theo. How can people treat kids so bad?” Andy asks as he hugs her tighter.

Connie senses the sadness in him. “It’s over Andy. You and John put his aunt away and now he’ll be safe. That should make you feel better, right?”

“I just hope they find a good foster family for Kale, he deserves that.”

Sensing a little more going on in his head she asks. “What are you thinking?”

“I was just thinking of someone I know who takes in foster kids. Kale would do real good in her home, she’s tough and she gives all she can to the kids. Maybe I’ll give her a call and see if she’s still takin’ in kids.” Andy says and looking down he notices that Connie is barely awake. Stroking her back he lets her sleep and thankfully he knows he’ll sleep too, now that she’s back where she belongs.

The next morning Connie decides to go back to work and take off Friday when her mom was due to come back into the city.

Andy and Jr. swing by the hospital to check in with Kale and his new caseworker Carl Montague. Kale is in a good mood and looking forward to leaving the hospital. Carl advises Andy and Jr. that he was not able to find any foster family with the room to take Kale. Arrangements had been made for him to stay at a boy’s center in Hoboken.

“Carl do you know if Karen Swenson is still taking in kids?” Andy asks.

“Name doesn’t sound familiar but I can make a call and find out.” Looking at both Andy and Jr. “I’ll be right back.”

Jr. looks at Andy “who’s Karen Swenson?”

“She’s an old friend, I guess. Tough and just the kind of person to take good care of Kale.”

Carl returns with a resigned look. “Sorry detective no go. Apparently she’s full and not taking in any more kids. Hasn’t for a while.”

“If you can get me her number Carl, I’d appreciate it. I know it’s a long shot but I’d like to give her a call myself.” Andy tells him.

“It’s your time detective. Let me get the number for you. I’ll take Kale straight to Hoboken once he’s released.” Carl informs them.

“Look Carl, could you just hold off on Hoboken until I try all my contacts. I know we’re asking a lot but we really want to keep Kale out of places like that.”

Looking at his watch impatiently “detective the problem is I don’t have any place to put him while you do your shopping… I’ve got several more cases to deal with today.”

Jr. tells Carl impatiently “Carl we’ll take him to our station house and have our people watch out for him. Give us ‘til quitting time to find other accommodations okay? Come on what can it hurt?”

Sighing. “Okay, you’ve got ‘til the end of the day. I’ll get that number for you guys. Good luck.”

“You think this friend of yours will come through Andy?” Jr. asks worriedly.

“I don’t know Jr. but if she does it might cost me a major organ.” Andy looks around not sure what would happen but praying for a miracle.

Carl returns with the phone number for Andy and lets them know he’ll drop Kale by the precinct by lunchtime. Andy goes to a corner to make his call in private and after a short time he re-joins Jr. and Carl.

“Any luck?” Jr. asks hopefully.

“She’s going to meet me at the station later this morning to talk to me.” With a frown he looks away as he tells Jr. “but she didn’t say no.”

Back at the station house all the detectives are working at their desks. Things have been slow and everyone is taking advantage of the downtime to catch up on paperwork. Carl had called that Kale was being released and informed them they were on their way to the house.

Moments later a very pretty, petite brunette walks into the squad. PAA John recognizes her immediately, but before he can say anything she loudly announces her presence.

“This better be good Sipowicz!” She bellows. “I don’t hear from you for over 4 years then bam! I get a call and it’s urgent, you need to see me right away. Well, here I am.”

Everyone in the squad is staring openly at this strange woman. Connie is especially interested as Andy has suddenly become slightly red and is visibly uncomfortable.

“Geez Karen you still enter a room like a bull seeing red. The years didn’t soften you any that’s for sure.” Andy tells her with irritation.

“That used to turn you on big guy. Or did you forget? And here I thought you’d finally decided I was the love of your life and you were going to sweep me off my feet.” She says sarcastically.

“The only place I’d be sweeping you is under the wheels of a moving bus. God, I thought you’d mellow by now but obviously you’re still a ball breaker.” Looking around he notices the open stares from everyone. “Let’s take this somewhere more private.”

“Why? You don’t want your friends to hear all about us?” She laughs.

Through clenched teeth Andy tells her. “In the coffee room Swenson. Now!”

“Okay, okay, but I’m not into quickies in a room with food Andy so maybe we should go to the Pokey, at least there there’s a mirror.” She smiles and winks as she pushes through the gate and marches to the coffee room. “Hi Greg! Looking good.”

Andy stands at his desk breathing deep counting slowly and mumbling under his breath.

“So Andy, she a friend I should know about?” Connie asks with open interest.

Still very agitated “not now Connie. Not now.”

From the coffee room Karen sings out for all to hear. “Come on Stud. Don’t make me start without you.”

Looking at Jr. he tells him. “I told you this was going to cost me. Didn’t I tell you? If I’m not out in 5 minutes I want you to come in and shoot me. You understand? Shoot me dead!” And with that he slowly walks to the coffee room.

Karen watches Andy as he enters the room. “Now are you going to tell me why I was summoned?”

“Cut it out, it’s just you and me now, no audience to perform for.” Andy glares at her.

“Andy, you call me out of the blue after all these years of silence and you think I’m not going to make you sweat a little? You don’t ask how I’ve been, if I’m happy, anyone new in my life… just ‘I need your help.’ Did you think I would come in quietly?” She asks looking at him.

“I get it, I get it. Sorry… I didn’t mean to be rude.” Pulling out a chair and signaling for her to sit  “so are you happy Karen? Anyone new in your life?” He settles in a chair next to hers and looks at her with interest.

With a sigh and a slight smile “what do you need from me Andy? All joking aside, you know I’d pretty much do anything for you no matter how angry you make me.”

“I’m sorry I never called… that was mean, even for me. I guess I just didn’t think.” Andy says uncomfortably. “Is there anyone new in your life? God knows you deserve to be happy.”

“I’m doing good Andy, really. No guy in my life right now… but I’m not giving up the hope that there’s someone out there for me.” Grabbing his left hand she notices the ring. “I guess it’s still not you though. Congratulations. When did this happen?”

“Late last year. She’s wonderful.” Squeezing her hand he smiles. “You’re wonderful too Karen… but you and I both know we wouldn’t have worked out. Right?”

“Relax Andy, yes it was good while it lasted… very good… but I’m not some lovesick teeny bopper pining for the guy that got away. I was… am hurt though that you never called. You just dropped out of my life… we may not belong together romantically but I thought we’d always stay friends. Good friends.” She says sadly.

“We are friends, good friends. Hell… I’m sorry for that Karen… that was just me… being me. I won’t let it happen again. From this day forward we’re back in each other’s lives. Friends, I promise.” Andy tells her seriously.

Leaning towards him she kisses him lightly on the lips. “Friends. That’s good for me, very good, a person can’t have too many friends.” She leans back in her chair still holding onto Andy’s hand. “What can I do for my friend?”

“I’ve got this 10 year old kid that needs you. He’s a good kid who’s been treated pretty badly, but he’s still good and I know you’re the one to keep him that way. He sure as hell don’t belong in no boy’s home.”

“This kid must have made a very strong impression on you.”

“He reminds me of my son Theo. Kale deserves to be a normal kid, leading a normal life, all kids do. I know you’d do right for this kid Karen, you’re the kind of mom he needs.”

“Damn it Sipowicz! You knew no matter how angry I was at you I wouldn’t say no, especially when a kid’s involved.” She scolds.

“I was hoping to appeal to your basic weakness.” He says with a smile of relief.

“I never could say no to you. All right, I’ll take him. Where is he? Give me the name of his case worker and I’ll make the arrangements.”

“Carl Montague. He and Kale are already on their way here.”

“You were that sure I’d say yes?” She asks suspiciously.

“Not really, but I figured after all the begging I was prepared to do you’d take pity on me.”

Out in the squad…

“Boy I can’t believe how good Karen looks.” Greg thinks out loud.

“She’s still a ball of fire.”

“So Greg how well did this Karen and Andy know each other?” Connie asks.

“Oh they were a pretty hot item for a short time, I don’t think I ever knew why it ended. But I tell you, exchanges like that one were very common with those two.” Greg offers without hesitation. “She’s one in a million, that Karen. She takes in younger kids no one else wants, or kids with special needs, and loves them like her own. She’s got a big heart. Last I heard she was in the process of adopting one of the kids.” Pausing a moment in thought, “I always wondered how they ended things, guess now we all know.”

Everyone gets very quiet as the door to the coffee room opens and Andy and Karen walk out chatting calmly. Karen follows Andy to his desk where he hands her his card and tells her to call him as soon as she’s set up.

Greg notices Karen getting ready to leave, “you look great Karen its good seeing you again. Maybe we can get together sometime and catch up… if you’d like.”

Seeing the scowl on Andy’s face she laughs. “Tell you what Greg, you talk to Andy about what to expect on a date with me and if that doesn’t scare you off… then definitely give me call. I think we’d have a blast.” Sliding her hand up and down Andy’s chest “Andy can always find me… he has all my numbers.”

“Stop that!” Andy whispers as he pushes her hand away. “Karen needs to leave Medavoy, arrange your date later.”

Ignoring Andy she looks around the squad and notices all the new faces. “Hello. I’m Karen Swenson and contrary to anything Andy may say about me when I leave I’m really very nice.”

Sighing in resignation Andy makes the introductions and again tries to get her to leave.

“Now will you leave? Please?” Andy pleads.

“All right already. Good to meet you all.” To Andy “you, I’ll see later when you bring Kale.”

Andy looks around the squad at all the interested faces. Trying to act as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened he looks at Greg. “So Medavoy let me give you her number before I forget.”

“Thanks Andy. Uhh Andy you’re okay with this right? I won’t be steppin’ on no one’s toes asking her out will I?” Greg asks with concern.

Irritated, he looks at Greg. “No Medavoy, she said she was interested didn’t she?”

“Yeah, yeah she did… well then, thanks a lot Andy.”

Sitting down he feels Jr. and Connie’s stares boring into him but decides to ignore them as long as he can, not up to giving any explanations right then. Thankfully Carl and Kale choose that moment to make their appearance.

“Hi Detective Sipowicz! We’re here.” Kale announces happily. “Look at the cool clothes Nurse Kayla gave me.”

“Hey Kale, looks good.” Andy says amazed at how different this Kale looked from the Kale he’d met just yesterday.

“Hi Kale.” Jr. smiles. “You look real cool.”

“I’ve got to go detective’s, just let me know when you hear from your friend.” Carl says hurriedly.

“She’s already agreed Carl, we just talked to her. You’ll probably be hearing from your supervisor later. We’ll take him over to her place this afternoon.” Andy advises him.

“Good, I’m glad it all worked out.” To Kale, “I’ll probably see you tomorrow Kale. Hope you like your new home.” Waving, Carl leaves.

Kale looks around the squad room with awe. “Wow, I’ve never been all the way inside a police station before. This place is so cool!”

Jr. offers to take Kale on a tour of the precinct and after he introduces him to the other detectives they head out.

Andy calls Karen on her cell phone and she agrees to rush and have everything ready within a few hours for Kale’s arrival. After he ends his call he exhales and rubs his head in relief.

“It looks like it’s all going to work out for him Andy, you did good.” Connie assures him. “He seems like a nice young man.”

“Yeah, he is.” Andy smiles.

“So, about Karen… how come I’ve never heard about her ‘til today?” She asks curiously.

“Aww Connie, can’t this wait ‘til later?” Andy pleads. “I promise you can ask me anything… later.”

Kale spends the next hour or so learning the ins and outs of doing paperwork. Disappointed that he couldn’t go out to actual crime scenes, he settles for picking PAA John and Connie’s brains on all the background work involved in solving cases. Karen calls while Andy and Jr. are out on a case and Connie speaks to her assuring her that Kale would be dropped off as soon as they were able.

30 minutes later Andy calls and lets Connie know that they were tied up and he asks her to bring Kale and meet them at Karen’s house. After getting her address she and Kale leave for his new home.

Karen’s home is on a quiet corner in Queens. There is a small front yard, which is neat and well kept. As they pull up she notices Andy and Jr. parked across the street and they get out as she parks. The four of them walk up to the front door together and before they can knock the door is flung open by a young girl in a wheelchair.

“Mom! They’re here!” To their guests “come on in. I’m Venise. My mom will be right out, have a seat.”

The inside of the house is neat and looks very ‘lived in.’ Karen comes down a small hallway and greets them.

Looking directly at Kale. “Hi I’m Karen. You must be Kale.” Holding out her hand.

Kale holds out his hand shyly. “Hello.”

“This must be pretty scary huh? I understand, but I don’t bite and neither do they.” She nods towards Venise and two young boys who appeared in the hallway. “You’ve already met Venise, that’s Derrick and the little one is Nolan. Why don’t we all have a seat in the living room and get to know each other.”

Kale sits close to Andy still shy. He looks at the other kids warily. Andy rubs his shoulder and winks letting him know everything would be okay.

Derrick walks up to Kale “you want to see our room? We have to share ‘cuz Venise is a girl and she has to get her own room, and Nolan has this big machine in his room that makes a lot of noise.”

Kale slowly gets up to follow Derrick and as they leave Venise and Nolan are right behind them.

“You’ve got a full house Karen.” Andy says looking around.

“Actually I can take in another one, but Nolan and Venise need so much attention sometimes that it wouldn’t be fair to take in any more. This one I’m taking for you Sipowicz. I know if you see something good there then I will too.” Looking at Connie “ Connie right? You look like you’re about ready to pop. Why did you let them talk you into making the trip out here?”

Clearing his throat Andy tells Karen. “She was helping us out and it gives me the chance to introduce you two properly. Connie’s my wife Karen. I’m sure you can understand why I couldn’t tell you earlier.”

“Well, well, so this is the woman who stole you away from me.” Laughing, “just kidding. Congratulations Connie. I don’t have to tell you what a great guy you’ve got here. I wish you all the best. So he did that to you huh?”

“Yes he did. Thank you very much.” Connie smiles.

“Anytime he gets out of line you give me a call and I’ll tell you some of my tricks for keeping him honest. But I guess you don’t need my help, hell you’ve got a gun… use it!” She laughs.

“Geez, don’t go giving her ideas Karen.” Andy scolds lightly, happy that the two seem to like each other.

Looking at his watch, Andy tells Karen. “We’ve got to get going, the sitter is expecting us in half an hour. Sorry we couldn’t stay longer and make this easier.”

Rising and calling out for Kale. “Don’t worry he’ll be fine. The other kids will make sure of that.” To Connie “call me, we’ll talk.” She says with a wink.

Kale comes out and sadly says good-bye. “You’ll still check on me right?” He asks Andy and Jr.

“Of course we will. Karen has all our numbers and she’s all ready said we can visit whenever we want.” Jr. assures him.

“You’ll be fine Kale, but John’s right if you need to you can call us anytime. Understand?” Andy tells him.

“Okay. Thanks for all you did to help me. Thanks for keeping your promise.” Kale tells them as he hugs them. He says good-bye to the three and watches from the door as they leave.

In the car Connie leans over and kisses Andy gently on his lips and rests her hand on his lap as they begin their drive to pick up the kids.

Connie is dying to ask him about the very interesting Karen but she doesn’t want to spoil the moment.

Minutes into their drive Andy breaks down “Karen and I dated for a short time a while after Sylvia passed. We knew each other from when her husband and I worked in Queens together. He died on the job about a year before Sylvia and she was a very big help to me during that time.”

Connie squeezes his thigh remaining silent, knowing that he wasn’t comfortable sharing the details of his and Karen’s relationship. She always admired his loyalty to the important people in his life and she could feel the genuine concern and caring he held for Karen.

Slowly Andy continues. “We were both lonely, and spending time together made us feel good. Eventually one thing led to another… and after we’d umm… been together, I realized that I wasn’t ready for another relationship. I didn’t think I would ever be ready. Karen was so good, so patient and I was a jerk and just broke it off. She understood what I was going through and didn’t try to pressure me for more… she was very supportive, but me being the jerk I can be…I hurt her.” Covering her hand with his, “thankfully she forgave me. But I want her to be happy Connie, as happy as I am, she really deserves that.”

“I’m sure there is someone out there for her Andy. Who knows? It could be Greg. He seems very interested in her, he pretty much said so.” Connie smiles.

“You think? Greg’s a nice guy I guess, but Karen has the personality of a Mac truck. That was my biggest attraction to her you know, her personality. She can always make people laugh no matter how down they are.” He smiles.

“Oh yeah? And what was it that attracted you to me?” Connie asks teasingly.

Joking, “come on Connie, you ever take a good look in the mirror?” More serious, “actually it was your perseverance. You just wouldn’t go away, no matter how hard I pushed you hung in there and you stood strong. And, since you were always around, I figured I should at least give us a chance.” He laughs.

“And aren’t you glad you did? Look at all the good that’s come to both of us.” Connie tells him.

Later that evening, during dinner…

“Dad, could you take me to the batting cage this weekend so I can practice my hitting?”

“We’ll see Buddy, Grandma’s going to be here this weekend and I’m sure she’ll want to spend as much time with you and Michelle as she can before she leaves.” Andy tells him.

“Oh I forgot. Maybe she can come with us. I bet she’d have fun, right Mom?” Theo asks hopefully.

“I’m not sure about that Sweetie, but maybe you and Dad can go Sunday afternoon after we take Grandma to the airport. All right?”

Theo looks at Andy “all right Dad? Please?”

“All right.” Andy agrees as he lifts Michelle out of her chair and takes her to the kitchen to get cleaned up. “Theo help Mom bring all those dishes over to the sink.”

Andy takes Michelle in for her bath while Theo helps Connie to clean up the kitchen. The mood in the Sipowicz home has been much brighter since Connie’s return. As soon as Andy finishes giving Michelle her bath Theo goes in for his nighttime routine. Connie showers and gets ready for bed while Andy reads the kids to sleep.

Once both kids are out for the night Andy heads straight to the bathroom for his shower. Connie goes out to glance through the mail and watch a little TV while she waits for Andy to join her.

The phone rings as Connie tries to find a program of interest. “Hello?”

Connie asks. “Yes Mr. Dawson we are still interested in a bigger apartment. We really appreciate all your help with this. My husband and I really don’t want to have to move out of this area. Tomorrow? What time would be good? Fine we’ll be there, thank you again. Good night.”

Andy walks out from the bedroom, “who was that?”

“Mr. Dawson, the Super. He says there’s a 3 bedroom apartment upstairs that is going to be vacant by the end of this month and we can have it if we want it.”

“Really? How’d that happen, last time we asked none were available.” Andy asks suspiciously.

“All he said was it was ours if we want it and it won’t cost that much more than this one. We have to meet him here tomorrow at lunchtime. That work for you?” Seeing Andy’s hesitation she continues. “Andy this will work out perfectly. We only have to move upstairs, Theo doesn’t have to change schools and we’re getting the extra room we need.”

“I know you’re right I just dread the whole packing and moving thing… you know how that goes. So do we get to see the apartment tomorrow too?”

“He said we get to see it before we sign the lease.” Pulling Andy down onto the couch beside her, she hugs him tight. “This is great news Andy, I’m so glad. I was worrying about how tight we were going to be in here once the baby came.”

Caught up in her enthusiasm, “yeah this is good. Theo is going to be so excited that he won’t have to change schools again and leave all his friends.”

Connie is so happy she pushes Andy back on the couch until he is in a reclining position and climbs on top of him. “This is great Andy! Don’t be such a grouch, this move we’ll be doing together and it’s only up one flight, so come on be happy.”

“I guess I don’t have to ask you how you feel about this.” He laughs. Pushing her hair away from her face he strokes her cheek and runs his fingers over her lips. “You are so beautiful Connie, especially when you’re happy. Me making you happy is all I ever want.” He pulls her face to his for a sweet light kiss on her lips. He follows that with a kiss on each of her cheeks then back to her mouth for a deep breath- stealing kiss. His tongue dives between her lips and searches for hers, slowly and sensually tasting every corner and crevice of her mouth drowning in the taste of her while his hands run up and down her body trying to draw her closer. Connie holds his head tight in her hands encouraging him to go on and on.

“Mom, Dad…” Theo watches them for a moment then calls out louder. “Mom, Dad…”

Connie is the first to hear Theo and very, very reluctantly ends the kiss. As her head clears she tries hard not to laugh at the look of horror on Andy’s face at being caught ‘necking’ by his son. Holding him down so he won’t jump up she asks Theo as calmly as she can. “What are you doing up Theo? I thought you were already in bed?”

“I was, but when I went to the bathroom your bedroom door was open and I didn’t see you guys. I wondered where you were. Why are you guys having kissing sex on the couch?” He asks. “Aren’t you supposed to do that in your room, with the door closed?”

Andy is now very flustered and a little red. “Yeah, well your mom and me were just going to watch some TV …”

“But the TV isn’t on Dad.”

Pushing up and firmly placing Connie away from him he scowls at the laughter he can see in her eyes. “Never mind that Theo, we were just about ready to go to bed anyway so why don’t I tuck you in again and we’ll all turn in okay?” Andy tells him as he guides him back to his room.

“G’night Mom.” Theo calls out.

Connie bursts out laughing. It takes several minutes before she can gather herself enough to secure the apartment and go in search of Andy. Stopping by the kid’s room she sees him talking quietly with Theo and not wanting to disturb them she heads to bed. Finally after several more minutes Andy enters their room and locks the door behind him.

Seeing the wide smile on Connie’s face he just looks at her. “Don’t… don’t say anything. Never in my mind did I think that my 8 year-old son would catch me making love... on the couch! Dammit Connie this is not funny so stop laughing. By this time tomorrow Joey’s parents are going to know all about our sex lives just like we know theirs. Will that be funny?”

Giggling, “no… but Andy, stop worrying. We’ll talk to Theo tomorrow and we’ll remind him about not sharing stories. That’s the best we can do.” Pulling him down on the bed beside her she starts running her hands down the front of his body. His penis is semi-erect and she smiles, “I see this guy is still interested in fooling around.”

“That guy has a mind of his own. Has since I was 11 and saw my first naked lady.” He removes his t-shirt and boxers before settling beside her again and starts nuzzling her neck.

“Are you trying to drive me crazy? Now I have to wonder about another beautiful woman from your past who might show up at any time in our lives.” Connie teases.

“I said she was naked Connie, I never said she was beautiful. Hell I was 11 and at that age a naked lady is a naked lady. I never bothered to look at her face, besides she’s probably dead now. Let’s talk about something else hmmm? Like how good you taste.”

Andy lifts her bottom slightly so can remove her t-shirt. He fills his hands with her breasts rubbing, squeezing and teasing her nipples into hard nubs before drawing one deep into his mouth. He pays equal attention to the other one and continues the torture until she is gasping and writhing under him.

With a low growl from deep within him he slides his hands down her body, pushing her panties down her legs until she kicks them off impatiently. Andy is caught up in his driving need for her. He reaches down and slides his fingers between her thighs searching through her wet hot lips, laying her open to him. Her breaths are getting faster and she’s caught up in the pleasure of his touch.

Connie grabs his penis in her hand and squeezes hard before stroking back and forth driving him mad.

“Connie, I’m still on overload from our weekend apart and if you don’t stop that now, I’m going to embarrass myself.” With that he unwraps her hand from around him and pushes her thighs apart, opening her totally to his view. He guides the head of his shaft to her opening and rubs back and forth. Moving higher, he rubs her clit until Connie is so overcome with desire that her body rises off the bed nearly pushing him off of her. Finally he enters her, slowly trying to draw out the sensation for both of them, but the squeezing heat of her vaginal muscles around his penis drives him mad. He thrusts deep and hard, her legs immediately wrap themselves around his waist, raising her up and bringing him even more deeply inside of her.

Unbelievable, she thinks to herself, how can it be so damn unbelievable every time? She looks up into his face and sees the tension in his face, the clenching of his jaw and the small beads of sweat on his forehead. “Oh God Andy!” She cries out. Reaching up she bites his ear then sucks it slowly between her lips gasping with every thrust of his hips.

Andy knew she was about to come, he could feel the tension in her body and he saw the look change in her eyes as she became lost in her orgasm. He slowed his thrusts slightly watching and loving the look of her climax as it took over her. He tried. He truly tried to let her ride that wave for a while longer but the walls of her vagina were clutching and spasming around his penis and he was lost. It was too much for him, groaning he came.  It seemed to him that she totally and completely drained him and he didn’t feel like he would ever move again. He didn’t seem to have any strength and with a slight groan he falls on his face beside her.

The only sound in the room for quite a while is the sound of their breathing as it returns to normal. Turning, Connie looks over and sees Andy facedown and still. “Hey, don’t you dare fall asleep on me.”

Andy turns his head and mutters weakly. “I’m too weak not to fall asleep. Lady you just sucked the life out of me.”

“Yeah huh?” Connie gets up and walks to the bathroom as Andy watches. With great difficulty he manages to get up and climb under the covers, not even trying to find his boxers. When Connie returns she immediately climbs in beside him cuddling into his side.

“I love you Andy. This is exactly where I belong, in your arms.”

“I love you too Connie.” Andy kisses her temple. After a moment he laughs lightly.

“What’s so funny?” Connie asks.

“I just remembered something Karen said once to me. At the time I didn’t believe her but now I know she was right. Guess I should thank her and give her the opportunity to tell me ‘I told you so.’”

“What did she say?”

“Well, it was right after I told her I only wanted to be alone and raise Theo, no more relationships. Just me and Theo. She told me that in her heart she knew there was another someone for me. Someone I would love, someone I wouldn’t be afraid to love and start over with. Someone who would make me feel alive again.” Hugging her tight. “Thanks for being my someone Connie.”

“Anytime Andy. Thanks for finally giving in.” She smiles. Looking into his eyes she sees a light sheen of tears and she kisses his lips lightly then rests her head on his chest. They fall asleep in each other’s arms, knowing they’re both exactly where they’re supposed to be.
