NYPD Blue Fanfiction

Maggie's Fanfic
(8 short stories featuring several different couples!)

It's the start of a new day, and Greg is making coffee in the
coffeeroom. It's bitter cold out, the wind is howling, the pipes are
banging in the building. Andy and Connie come into the squad both of
them looking exhausted. Connie looks close to tears. Neither of them
speaks. Connie tosses her handbag into her desk drawer and Andy
mumbles something about getting some coffee.

Greg looks at Andy for a long moment and leaves the room. He knows
better than this is not a time to chit chat with Sipowicz. Connie is
emerging from the locker room, her face bright red from splashing
cold water across her face.

Greg is sympathetic. "Sure is cold out today. I called time and
temperature and it's minus six outside".

Connie says hastily, "What I would do to crawl under the covers and
sleep like a bear."

Greg ponders this and takes a long sip of coffee. Det Gibson enters
the room and Connie and Greg smile and him and say good morning.
Eddie smiles and says, "Where's Andy?". Greg motions to the
coffeeroom and Eddie happily goes off to look for Andy.

Det. Gibson closes the door behind him. Andy raises is eyebrows at
looks at Eddie as he pulls up a chair and sits down. "Everything
all right with you Eddie"?

"I'm great. Cynthia has met the man of her dreams, and I'm not
saying you weren't but anyway, she met a man who lived with for his
dying mother for 5 long years and the mother is now departed, and I
meant no disrespect by saying he's the man of her dreams, because she
loved you Andy".

"Great", say Andy. "I'm happy she has found someone who will give
her what she wants".

Eddie sits there and eats a doughnut and sips the coffee "Medavoy
must have made the coffee. It's too weak."

"So Gibson, why are you in here with the door closed"? "You didn't
come in to lecture me on gourmet coffee beans"?

Gibson laughs. "I'm still working for Mrs. Hornsby".

Andy looks confused "Everything okay? She's not having trouble with
the staff steeling is she"?

Gibson laughs. "No. She wants you to come for dinner".

Andy looks surprised. For once Andy just looks at Gibson.

Gibson smiles. "She extended the offer for Friday night and wants to
meet Theo, too."

"What's this about, Gibson"? Andy says sorely.

Gibson puts his left hand up to stop Andy. "She's grateful Andy.
You saved her from the poorhouse".

"Okay, I'll see if I can get away with Theo and I will let you know
before the shift is over".

Andy leaves the coffeeroom and goes to sit at typewriter. He has
forgotten to get coffee for Connie who looks irritated as hell when he
forgets. Greg disappears from the room and brings coffee to Connie
in a Styrofoam cup and puts a jelly doughnut with a napkin beside her.

Andy peers over his half-eyes and Connie looks up at Greg and gives
him a sincere smile.

The scene closes and the rush of the subway train appears on the
screen with the opening credits.

Mrs. Hornsby apartment is elegant, just the way Andy remembered it.
The housekeeper has opened the door for Andy and Theo, and let them
into the foyer and taken their heavy coats. Andy is helping her
handing the housekeeper Theo's hat and gloves.

"Oh, it's been too long!" Mrs Hornsby exclaims from somewhere in the
apartment. Suddenly, she appears, dressed in an elegant sweater,
slacks and shoes. She wears pretty earrings and a nice necklace, her
nails are manicured perfectly and she wears the scent of Clinque's
Happy. Andy recognizes it immediately because Sylvia loved the
scent. Tonight Andy is grateful for a night away from the cramped
quarters and the tension that is building between he and Connie.
Theo isn't angry tonight and for this Andy is grateful.

"This is where you worked to put money away for college, Daddy"?

"For your college, Squirt". Andy beams at Theo. Gosh it feels great
to be out tonight.

Andy was surprised that Connie didn't start an argument when he said
that Mrs. Hornsby wanted him to stop by with Theo. He didn't mention
dinner. He had never mentioned to Connie that Mrs. Hornsby and he
were about the same age. Connie looked so tired and Michelle was
sleeping, so Andy & Theo had made her some hot chocolate and she had
covered up on the sofa watching "When Harry Met Sally" and was asleep
before they left.

Mrs. Hornsby was showing Theo how to play chopsticks on the piano.
For the first time in ages, Theo was smiling. Andy was sitting on
the sofa staring at the fire crackling in the fireplace. Someone
opens the doorway from the hall, and a young man of about 18, walks
in. Mrs. Hornsby looks up and smiles.

"Andy, this is my grandson Mark".

Andy stands up & shakes Mark's hand and introduces himself & Theo to
Mark.

Mrs. Hornsby comes over and put her arm around her grandson. "This
boy makes me so proud, Andy. He wants to study criminal justice at
Columbia. He's here taking his entrance exams".

"Oh Grandma!" Mark says in mock embarrassment. "Is there any leftover
pizza"?

"Yes, Mark. Why don't you heat it up and take Theo in and show him
that new game that I don't understand".

Mark smiles at Theo and Theo smiles back. "Do you like computer
games, Theo? I just downloaded it on my laptop last night".

"Cool"! says a happy Theo and he follows Mark down a hallway.

The housekeeper brings out coffee and salads. Andy and Mrs. Hornsby
sit at the table. The housekeeper has lit candles and Mrs. Hornsby
put on Harry Connick Junior. Andy keeps thinking how relaxed he
feels.

"This is very nice of you to invite us, Mrs. Hornsby", Andy says as
he pours some ice-water into a glass. Andy is sweating now and
mopping his head with his handkerchief.

"Please call me Bea. It's what all my friends have always called me".

Andy nods and smiles. "Okay, Bea, this is nice".

"I was able to get two tickets to the premiere of the Harry Potter
movie. Mark is new to the city and maybe Theo could go with him.
The premiere is next week."

Andy sees Theo from a distance in the hall as he goes into another
room and Theo is looking relaxed and happy. "Sure, Mrs Hornsby, I
mean Bea. Let me pay for this."

"No, oh no, Andy. This is my treat. Andy, while they are at the
concert, I thought you and I could play cards or watch the ballgame".

"Sure Bea. That would be nice." Andy pats his forehead again with
his handkerchief.

The scene closes. End of Part II

It's the beginning of the work day, and Andy is seated at the
typewriter. Junior and Rita come into the squad and Junior helps
Rita out of her heavy coat. PAA John beams at them and hands them
messages. Lt. Rodriguez enters the squad and heads for his office.

Andy is typing a report but he peers over his half-eyes and sees Tony
gesturing him into the office. Andy looks over his shoulder and
realizes that PAA John is very much aware that Andy is being called.

Andy closes the door behind him. Tony gestures him to sit down.
Baldwin and Greg are pretending not to eavesdrop and Junior smiles as
he works on his report.

"Where's McDowell"? Tony says with a tone of concern.

Andy sighs.

"You know Andy, not everything works out. Sometimes it's just best
to admit your mistakes and get on with your life". Tony says in a
calm manner.

Andy looks at Tony for a long minute. His face shows anger. "Connie
will be in shortly. There was a problem with the sitter".

Tony leans back in his chair putting his hands together. "The whole
situation is affecting The Job".

Andy nods. "Maybe I can talk her into taking some lost time".

"Four people sharing a tiny apartment with a baby that cries with
colic half the night is not an ideal situation. Is Theo adjusting"?

"I talked with his principal and teacher the other night".

"I need two sharp detectives here. Right now I have two exhausted
detectives".

Andy is so tired he can't even come up with a good argument.
Michelle cries all night, and this wakes Theo and the bed wetting
continues. Andy tries his darndest to keep up with the soiled
linens, and everyone's laundry and ironing. Theo locks himself in
his room. The only time Theo is happy is when he and Andy are out
and about with Connie and the baby.

Tony says, "I hate to see you two struggling like this. It's hard".

Andy says nothing. He just looks tired. Connie is still not at
work. Andy is thinking of asking PAA John to page her.

"You shouldn't be together 24 hours a day. Maybe I should transfer
McDowell out", Tony says. Before Andy can comment, the phone rings.
Tony answers it and writes down something. He hands Andy the paper
and says "A shooting in the park. Take Junior and Rita with you".

The scene closes and the audience sees the subway rushing out of the
station as the opening credits appear.

Connie is in the public library, pushing a stroller with Michelle
wrapped tightly in a pink bunting. Connie is searching the stacks.
Finally with the help of a clerk from the reference desk, Connie
finds a dog eared copy of What to Expect The First Year. Connie is
walking along coming out of the stacks, holding her found book and
pushing the stroller when she nearly runs over Greg.

"Connie"! Greg exclaims.

An old librarian clears her voices loudly and points to the sign
Quiet Please.

Greg nods and whispers "Sorry".

Greg pulls out a chair from a nearby table and asks Connie to sit
down. "You are looking more rested, Connie", he says.

Connie looks at him and says "I should take a parenting class".

Greg peeks inside the pink bundle and looks up at Connie and
says "May I hold her"?

Connie nods. Greg gently unbundles Michelle from the bunting and
picks the baby up like he does it everyday. "What are you doing in
here @ this time of the day"?

Greg is holding the baby who has opened her eyes and is holding on
tightly to Greg's tie. Greg seems unflappable. This is somehow
reassuring to Connie. "I'm on a late lunch. Baldwin is playing
basketball with Junior".

Connie doesn't know what to say. She's glad to be away from the job
for now. It really scared her when Andy told her that Tony was
thinking of asking her to transfer out. Connie is getting the
feeling that she has taken on more than she can handle.

Greg asks Connie to go with to the coffeeshop across the street.
Greg, rather than Connie bundles the baby, covers her from the cold
and they check Connie's book out, and a stack of books that Greg has.

Connie, Greg and the baby find an empty booth. Greg says "Humor me,
Connie and let me sit next to the baby". Connie shrugs and smiles @
Greg. Greg slides the carrier part of the stroller into the seat
and they sit down. "Let me buy your lunch Connie".

Connie shakes her head, "That's sweet of you but not necessary".

Greg hands Connie a menu, "It would be my pleasure".

Connie smiles a broad smile.

Michelle begins to fuss after Greg takes her back out of the
bunting. Greg reaches into the diaper bag and retrieves a bottle of
juice. He takes the baby in his arms and proceeds to give her the
juice. Again, Michelle grabs Greg's tie and hold on tight. Medavoy
looks very happy. He looks at Connie and smiles. "I love babies."

"Maybe your daughter will make you a grandpa", Connie suggests.

The waitress brings their order. Connie is eating a plate of
spaghetti and drinking hot coffee while Greg orders a Coke and a
grilled cheese sandwich. He orders a side of jello and takes a tab
and puts it on Michelle's tongue. The baby gets a funny look on her
face and Greg smiles while she spits the jello back out. Greg tries
spooning a taste of Coke. Michelle gums her mouth and makes a
smacking sound. Both Greg and Connie laugh.

"You know, if you ever need some time off from the baby for an
appointment, I would be more than happy to watch her."

Connie smiles. "Thanks Greg". She means it very sincerely.

The set goes dark.

It's Saturday night. Connie is rocking the baby to sleep. Andy &
Theo come in from going over to the Manhattan to the Empire State
Building at looking out at NY at nighttime. Andy and Theo have
stopped at a street vendor and got a slice of pizza and then decided
to go back to the apartment. Theo is progressing now that he sees
the school psychologist twice a week. For now, the bed wetting is
not a nightly occurrence. Andy sees that Theo is in bed and asleep.
Connie has put Michelle down to sleep.

Andy is sullen. He's never been good with confrontation. And
tonight is the night. Connie pours a Coke for herself and a diet
Coke for Andy. There is the sound of popcorn popping in the
microwave.

Andy helps her carrying the food in to the sofa. They don't turn on
the tv. Andy clears his throat. He doesn't want to hurt Connie.

Andy gets up off the sofa and moves to the overstuffed chair
directly across from Connie. Connie looks surprised.

"This isn't working out very well", Andy says to Connie. Connie
suddenly looks very tired. Andy continues, "Things would be a lot
easier if Theo and I moved out".

Connie screams at Andy. "Easier for who?"

Andy holds his temper. "Connie, whatever we had before was
wonderful. But it's not working anymore."

Connie lowers her voice because she thinks she hears Michelle
cry. "Whatever we had before"?

"Rita is sub-letting her apartment. It's big enough for Theo and
me. It's in the same school district as he is in now."

"Rita is subbing her apartment"? Connie asks in total surprise. "She
and Junior must have found someplace to live after the
wedding."

Connie hesitates before she goes on, "You know, maybe this isn't
working. You and Theo get your own apartment and I'll stay here with
Michelle."

Andy looks at Connie for a moment. "You know I love you."

Connie's eyes fill with tears. "I love you too. We just can't live
together".

Andy walks over to Connie and sits down and the embrace.

The viewer sees the set go dark.

Everyone has gathered at the church for Rita and John Clark Junior's
wedding day. It's a beautiful Catholic church decorated with white
roses, and white candles. Andy, Baldwin, And Papa Clark are all in
the rectory getting ready. Junior is dressed his cop uniform. All
his comrades are dressed in cop uniforms as well.

Greg is out in the church seating the guests. Eddie Gibson is also
there seating guests as well.

Connie arrives with the baby and sits with PAA John.

The priest arrives and the music is playing. Their are flutes,
coronets, trumpets, and trombones as well as the pipe organ. Guests
are still arriving Theo says to Andy. In a minute he will join the
ladies to be the ring-bearer. On the way to the other side of the
church where the ladies are waiting, Theo sees Connie and comes in
and gives her a kiss on the cheek. Connie is startled by this but
gives Theo a quick kiss on his cheek. Theo then leaves to go join
the girls.

The doors to the church are closed. Greg slips into the seat beside
Connie and John. Little Michelle sees Greg and laughs. Greg smiles
and takes her from her carrier and hold her. As usual, the baby
latches a tight grip onto Greg's necktie. John just smiles. Connie
looks at John and smiles.

In a moment the doors open to the where Theo is seen, look very nice
in a tuxedo with a lavender cummerbund. He has a white carnation in
his coat. He begins the slow march down the long aisle. As he
reaches half way to the aisle, Papa Clark comes in and quietly sits
down. He sits with Lt. Rodriguez, and Officer Shannon. Eddie
Gibson, comes in from the side and sits with them. He'll be helping
the priest with the Eucharist later.

A moment later Junior comes in, followed closely by Andy and Baldwin.

Mary Franco, a long time friend of Rita's is the bridesmaid. The
maid of honor which brings a smile to Baldwin's eyes is ADA Haywood.
And finally, everyone stands as Rita enters the room marching slowly
down the isle. Juniors eyes are welling up with tears. Greg
squeezes Connie's hand with his free hand. Connie's eyes are
brimming with the tears for her friends but squeezes Greg's hand
back. PAA John has noticed all of this and looks happy.

Andy and Baldwin have agreed to keep Papa Clark sober today. Since
Andy and Papa Clark worked hard to clear Junior's name in the heroine
charge, Andy has been sponsoring Clark at AA meetings.

"I now pronounce you husband and wife" the priest declares. Junior
and Rita kiss and Rita will keep her Ortiz name in the precinct to
cut down on confusion but she is introduced as John and Rita Clark.
Everyone claps.

The receptionist at a local Knights of Columbus where John Clark
Senior is a member. It's a lovely sit down dinner with prime rib,
baked potatoes, asparagus, hot rolls, and later the wedding cake.
There is a bar available but Papa Clark goes and orders a coke.
After the dollar dance, Papa Clark goes over and wants to hold
Michelle. Greg takes this opportunity to dance with Connie. Andy
swings Mrs. Hornsby out on the floor. Eddie is dancing with his
wife. Tony is dancing with Mary Franco. Baldwin and Valerie are
dancing. Barry White is crooning "You are the first, the last, my
everything". Next song starts to play and Theo asks Connie to
dance. Greg goes and gets 3 Cokes, one for Connie, one of PAA and
one for himself. Clark Sr. hands the baby to Rita who sits for a
moment looking radiant. Junior comes behind with glasses of
champagne for he and Rita. When Theo is done dancing with Connie, he
asks, Mrs. Hornsby to dance so, Andy comes over and asks Connie to
dance. He looks hot and is drying his clammy hands with his
handkerchief. Connie and Andy smile at each other as they dance.

"You and Medavoy are an item"? Andy asks.

Connie smiles. "He really toodles Michelle".

Andy looks sincere and says "He a good guy, Connie".

"So are you Andy."

They kiss and Andy takes her back to the table and leaves her with
Greg who he pats gently on the shoulder. Greg looks happy sitting
toodling the baby again. After a while, she falls fast asleep on
Greg's shoulder gripping his necktie.

The rush of the subway train exits the station and the music and open
credits begin.
Andy is sitting in the squad room going over paperwork at the end of
the day. Everyone else has left for the day. He hears footsteps in
the hall and looks up to see Diane Russell standing on the other side
of the gate.

Andy takes off his half-eyes and stands up.

Diane, with a large smile, comes into the squad and gives Andy a big,
bear hug.

Andy motions for Diane to sit down. "What brings you here"?

Diane laughs and says "I thought I would catch you here. I just got
out of class".

"Class"? Andy begins to relax. It's good to see Diane. It's been a
long time.

"I took that lost time and went to Philly for awhile and then onto
Miami and while I was there I started taking classes. I'm getting
out of police work and into social work. I'm helping people with
substance abuse problems get rid of their demons. In another year,
I'll have my degree."

"I'm proud of you, Diane!" Andy says and asks Diane to go out for
coffee. Diane agrees and they leave the squad going down the steps
and out onto the street. Andy put her in the car, and they drive off
to a nice family-owned diner that Andy likes. When he and Diane
enter the little diner, complete with red and white checkered
tablecloths, and a candle at each table, Andy spots Tony and Mary
Franco eating at a back table.

Andy and Diane are seated with Andy holding out Diane's chair for
her. Their heavy coats are discarded and both of them order a Coke.
Tony spots Andy and Diane and comes over.

"Well, Diane. It's a pleasure to see you!" Tony says. "Are you
coming back to work?"

Diane shakes her head and says no. "I'm going for my CDCC
certification."

Tony shakes her hand. "That's wonderful, Diane. Hey Andy, Mary and
I are taking lessons at Arthur Murray dance studio. It's a lot of
fun."

Andy and Diane laugh and so does Tony and then he heads back to Mary
and dinner.

"Actually, I ran into Katie at an AA meeting with someone I have been
sponsoring and it made me think of you."

Andy is touched. "I think what you are doing is great. Are you still
seeing the doctor"?

Diane shakes her head. "He's at sea. He's in the Navy and when the
ships pulled out for the Persian Gulf, he was on one of them." Diane
sighs. "It really crushed me when I read about Danny. I should have
come to the funeral".

Andy takes her hand. "After Bobby, I didn't want to get that close to
my next partner because the pain of Bobby's death was too much for
me." He hands Diane a tissue as tears are rolling down her cheeks.
Andy takes another tissue out and wipes his heads. "Diane, I didn't
even know where to begin to look for him".

Their dinners arrive. Andy has spaghetti and so does Diane. He
continues to hold Diane's hand for another moment and she leans over
and kisses Andy on the cheek. With her face close to him, she then
moves her mouth right on his. It's a long embrace.

The subway train leaves the station and the opening credits begin.

The scene opens at the end of business day. Andy is not in the
squad. From what we are led to believe, he's been off all day on
lost time.

PAA is gathering his bags and putting on his coat. "Okay, I've given
all you the directions. Just go one over there and tell the maitre
d' that you are there from the 15th. My understanding is there is
valet parking".

Tony leaves his office. Mary is waiting for his outside the
squad. "See everyone there", he says. He and Mary precede down the
stairs.

Connie and Rita look at each other and nod. Junior comes over with
Baldwin and Greg. Junior looks at Rita and Connie and says "Do we
know what this is all about"?

Both ladies shake their heads. Baldwin says "Well, let's get over
there then."

The next scene is in a very elegant room, filled with statues of
ceramic lions, the maitre d seats everyone with Greg and Connie
sitting together, Mary and Tony sitting together and Rita and
Junior sitting together. Eddie Gibson come in and sits down too. A
moment or two later, John Clark Sr shows up and is quickly seated.
There are two seats left. Everyone is poured coffee and glasses of
ice-water with a twist of lime.

Eddie says to Tony and PAA John "Why are we here"?

Tony shrugs. Mary smiles.

In walk Andy and Diane arm-in-arm. Everyone looks surprised except
PAA John, Tony and Mary. Andy takes a fork and tings it again the
water glass. Diane is dressed in a lovely long black dress and Andy
is in a tuxedo. They both look radiant. Andy tings on the glass
again and everyone is totally focused on them.

Andy clears his throat and Diane is smiling broadly. They are both
standing as the guests are still seated. "Thanks John for seeing
everyone is here."

John smiles and says "My pleasure, Andy". Rita and Junior are very
focused at the moment on Andy and Diane.

"I wanted you to know that we went and got married this afternoon".
Andy says with happy crinkles around his eyes. "This is Diane for
those of you who don't yet know her".

Everyone applauds and Andy and Diane kiss. Diane has happy tears
running down her cheeks. They kiss for a very long moment.

Greg hugs Connie and says, "I love you". Connie hugs him back and
whisper "I love you, too".

Junior stands up and hold us his glass of ice-water and says "Here's
to Andy and Diane"!

Everyone applauds, waiters appear with menus and the race of the
subway train is shown as the opening credits appear.

Connie and Greg are walking through Central Park one
sunny and warm afternoon, Connie pushing the stroller.
The leaves in the park are beginning to change
colors. Old men sit on the park benches feeding the
pigeons or playing checkers. Occasionally a bicyclist
goes by and there are other people jogging while
listening to music. Some are skating carrying boom
boxes.

"This is very nice", say Greg with the wind tossing
his red hair. Connie is wearing a scarf and
sunglasses, like an actress who wants to disguise her
identity.

Michelle is sitting upright in her seat, playing with
a Raggedy Ann that Greg has bought for her. Connie
says "You know a lot more about me than I do you".

Greg shrugs it off. "What's to tell? You know what I
do for a living and where I work".

Connie laughs. Michelle shows her baby teeth. "All I
know is your had your teaching certificate to teach
English to high schoolers".

Greg smiles. "Maybe when I retire from the police
force, I'll go back and renew my credentials".

"So whatever happened to your old girlfriend, Donna"?

"I don't know Connie". Greg takes a moment to collect
his thoughts.

"What about Abby?" Connie asks gently.

"Well, the little boy has started school and she has
gone through hours of therapy and has finally met
someone that she loves".

"Another woman"?

Greg nods. "I thought she had a thing for me! I was
embarrassed when I went to her place and found out
that I was wanted for a donation".

"I have a thing for you Greg", Connie says and she
stops walking, and kisses Greg on the mouth.

Greg and Connie continue to walk and suddenly the
Raggedy Ann rolls out of the stroller. Both Greg and
Connie look startled until they realize Michelle is
sound asleep with her thumb in her mouth.

"I want to make you dinner. Did you know I can cook
Connie"?

The camera stands still and Connie and Greg continue
walking with people skating by them, bicycling, and
Connie and Greg walk farther and farther away.
