FROM THE PEOPLE OF FLORIDA, we wish to extend our prayers and compassion to the survivors and families of those who perished in the September 11, 2001 terrorist tragedy.  While no words can erase the pain or ease the sorrow, please know that our hearts, minds, and hands are here to comfort you.

Let it be known to the world that those who perished did not die in vain and those who must now endure the memory and physical trauma do not suffer alone.  The entire country was injured and as a result we will find a way to heal as one.  And in as much as we would all like to take revenge on those who assaulted us, we know in our hearts that the assailants will be judged in due time by a power much greater than humankind.  This act shall not go unpunished.

Let it also be known that because of the brave men and women who perished and because of those who now suffer with permanent memories and physical marks to their bodies, our united people have found new life.  It is suddenly not enough to voice our patriotism to flag and country … now we are compelled, driven by desire to act.  It is suddenly not enough to acknowledge our neighbor’s presence … now we are motivated to offer our hands to help and our ears to listen.  It is suddenly not enough to provide the basic necessities for our children … now we are moved to shamelessly demonstrate our love, to touch their hearts, and feed their minds with courage never before witnessed by this generation.

So it is with great pride that we step forward and show the world the unlimited strength of which Americans are truly made.  The bravery of those who gave their lives in past wars and battles to secure and maintain freedom for this great country has once again been fueled.  On September 11, 2001, a new group of heroes was added to these ranks of selfless individuals.  We will continue to mourn the loss and destruction for some time to come.  But from death came new life and no act of violence or words of disrespect will mar our integrity as a great nation.  Our wisdom and strength have set us free.   Faith and understanding have given us comfort.  Experience and courage have given us new light.  We are a power like no other in this world.  And we will survive.

On this national day of prayer and remembrance, we ask almighty God to watch over our nation, and grant us patience and resolve in all that is to come.  We pray that He will comfort and console those who now walk in sorrow.  We thank Him for each life we now must mourn, and the promise of a life to come.  As we have been assured, neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, can separate us from God’s love.  May He bless the souls of the departed.  May He comfort our own.  And may He always guide our country. God bless America.
