A Requiem
By Sherye Hanson

Wet American flags hang from car windows,
Cars honk to show they love America,
No one knows how to deal with terror.

We see pictures of turbaned men,
someone kills a man wearing a turban
wrong religion,
wrong man.

We hear about fanatic Arabs
a Christian Arab is killed.
wrong religion
wrong man

Women wearing Muslim veils
are pulled into traffic
wrong sex.
wrong person.

How do we even know Bin Laden did it
there was no arraignment,
no trial
no court
no jury.

Does hate replace life?
Does war erase terror?

We mourn more lives than we can imagine
As many as live in a small town,
Two tall towers
the biggest and the best
of the city
fall.

The center of our defense
is defenseless against the terror
soldiers die in the Pentagon
is that possible?

The weapons are commercial aircraft
We use everyday
to bring us to work
to school
to play.

One plane crashes far from the target
filled with brave men
who sacrificed their lives
to save another symbol
full of more innocent lives.

Now we must stand in line
and worry,
will they let me on
or think my needles are a weapon?

Dark days follow.
No flights.
Then comes poison in the mail.
something to arouse our deepest fears.
Are we not safe anywhere?

The charities collect
by using our sorrow,
then they keep and do not share
with the needy everywhere.
Does death in Manhattan mean
no one else suffers?

Oh God, where are you now?
Did we do something to anger you?

Oh nations of the world
We are the most powerful.
Are we the best?
Do we deserve your envy
and the anger of those
who want to live in a perfect world
ruled by Allah and his most ardent worshippers
people who believe that death is too
good for the infidels of
commerce and
Macreligion?

A. Lincoln blamed the civil war
on years of enslaving innocent lives.

Can we blame the terror war
on world trade
low wages
and exploiting the earth?

None of the whys will make a difference.
We must mourn,
We must weep,
We must bury our dead,
Whose bodies were buried
beneath the rubble
of thousands of tons of steel.

We now live in a different world.
with less trust and more fear.
We have no answers only questions.

Will American remain land of the free?
Or will we live in a prison we built
for
ourselves?
