Wellington and Barclay de Tolly land with 25,000 English, Russian and Swedish troops and march to Amsterdam. After a brief cannonade, the 5,000 Dutch defenders surrender. When word spreads to the 30,000 Dutch troops serving under French colors, mass desertions result. Poniatoski, at the head of 15,000 Dutch troops, narrowly escapes capture by his mutionus soldiers by leaping out of a second story window. |
