Dutch Castles
There are many castles in the Netherlands, many built hundreds of years ago and still in excellent condition.
Castle Ammersoyen was built around 1350 near the Maas river by the Van Herlaer family.
Although Castle Assumburg may look defendable, this castle is all about appearances. It was build in the late 15th century. By that time role of castles in the Netherlands as defensive strongholds was over. Castles were still being build but only as comfortable homes. But to show off his power, status or descent the builder of Castle Assumburg gave the castle this look.
Castle Loevestein was built somewhere between 1357 and 1368 by a Dirk Loef van Horne, who was then Lord of Altena and an unloyal vassal of the Count of Holland. His name may well explain the name of the castle; the stone house of Loef (with stein being an old word for stone). With possessing the castle came the right to charge tolls from passing ships.
Castle Duurstede -- Around 1270 Zweder I van Zuylen van Abcoude build a freestanding keep on a raised and moated site. This military building was about 11 meters high and had 2,5 meter thick walls. Later on an extra floor and a residential wing with a great hall were added.
At the end of the 13th century, Count Floris V of Holland (1256-1296) ordered the construction of a series of castles to control the Westfrisian population. Castle Radboud is the only one remaining of those castles. Of this coercion castle only 2 residential wings, 2 square and one round tower are still standing. From old pictures and archeological research it is known that Castle Radboud must have been a strong castle.
Castle Muiden is probably the castle that receives the most visitors in all of the Netherlands. This is because it's a popular destination for a lot of school trips, due to its importance in Dutch history, and also because of its proximity to Amsterdam which attracts most foreign tourists. The first castle on this site was build around 1280 by Count Floris V of Holland, to control the mouth of the river Vecht into the former Zuidersea.
