Sailing a Cape Cod Mercury with no Jib and No Rudder:
Getting Under Sail
Before sailing upwind, get the boat under sail and with sufficient boat speed so the boat will be responsive to a windward heel.Once the boat has speed, sheet in the main gently to increase the leeward heel and turn the bow upwind. Use increased windward heel to balance the leeward heel. Keep enough speed to be able to turn downwind enough when the wind shifts. If you lose boat speed and the boat is in irons, back the main in the desired direction of turn and get the boat under sail again.
