Hamilton Clears Way for NHL Bid
Friday April 30, 2004

Today's
Globe and Mail notifies us that yesterday the Hamilton city councillors approved a tentative deal that clears the way for an NHL team to operate out of Copps Coliseum.

The deal involves HHC Acquisition Corp., a Toronto-based group that has been interested in moving a club to Hamilton for months.

Under the proposed agreement, once HHC acquires a team it will take over management of the arena from the operator, a city-owned company, and pay $2-million in annual rent.

“There are a lot of people who have wanted an NHL team here for a long time and, if it is not costing our taxpayers, anything why not open that door to create that potential?” said Councillor David Mitchell, who sits on a committee that is negotiating the agreement. “I think it would be great for this area to have a team here and in Toronto and in Buffalo.”

It is not clear who is behind HHC, but Mitchell said council has been assured it has the finances to support a team.

Richard Rodier, a Toronto lawyer who represents HHC, was unavailable for comment
