How to Find the Right Church

*  Pray and ask God to lead you to the right place.

*  Realize that He already has a good church
picked out for you.
The church is a group of born-again believers.
Yet it is a place where the alcoholic, drug addict,
and any person in bondage to sin
can come and get healed, delivered, and set free.

*  Be willing to go anywhere God leads you
--even if it doesn't have a stained glass window.

*  Once you are sure you're in the right place,
there's no need to look further.
Don't fall into the trap of "church hopping."
Make a commitment to God,
so you won't miss out on what He has for you.

*  Don't make the mistake of looking for
the "perfect" church.

*  God will lead you to a place
that puts a high degree of emphasis
on the Word of God (the Bible).
If you don't need a Bible in a particular church,
be assured that it's not the right church for you!

*  God will lead you to a place
where the people worship freely
and the Holy Spirit is recognized and welcomed.

*  God will lead you to a place
where the people are warm and loving
and you are made to feel welcome.

The Vision of Norfolk Evangelistic Church:

2.  To love your neighbor as yourself.

3.  To reconcile mankind back to God.

Our Declaration of Faith

I.   We accept the Apostles’ Creed.

I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ,
His only Son.
He was crucified, died, and was buried.
On the third day He rose again.
He ascended into heaven and is seated on the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Amen

II.   We believe that:

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God.
~ 2 Timothy 3:16 ~

III.   We believe in salvation by God’s grace alone
through faith in Jesus Christ.

If you will confess with your mouth,
“Jesus is Lord,”
and will believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead,
you will be saved.
For with the heart one believes unto righteousness,
and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
~ Romans 10:9-10 ~

IV.   We believe that we cannot be saved by our own good works.

For by grace are you saved through faith;
and that not of yourselves;
it is the gift of God:
not of works,
lest any man should boast.
~ Ephesians 2:8-9 ~

V.   We believe there is no salvation in any other than Jesus Christ.

VI.   We believe that those who truly accept Jesus Christ as Lord
will be given new lives and will leave their old lives of sin.

As many as received Him,
to them He gave the right to become children of God,
to those who believe in His name.
~ John 1:12 ~

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,
he is a new creation;
old things have passed away;
behold, all things have become new.
~ 2 Corinthians 5:17 ~

VII.   We believe in the ministry of reconciliation.

Now all things are of God,
who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ,
and has given us the ministry of reconciliation,
that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself,
not imputing their trespasses to them,
and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
~ 2 Corinthians 5:18-19 ~

VIII.   We believe that we must rely on the Holy Spirit
in order to obey the Great Commission.

Take no thought how or what you shall speak:
for it shall be given to you in that same hour what you shall speak.
For it is not you that speak,
but the Spirit of your Father which speaks in you.
~ Matthew 10:19-20 ~

IX.   We believe in the priesthood of every born again believer.

You also, as living stones,
are built up a spiritual house,
a holy priesthood,
to offer up spiritual sacrifices,
acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
~ 1 Peter 2:5 ~

X.   We believe that the Christian Church is the body of Christ,
made of every true believer in Christ
(regardless of denomination).

For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one Body,
whether we be Jews or Gentiles,
bond or free;
and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.
~ 1 Corinthians 12:13 ~

The History of Norfolk Evangelistic Church

by Dr. James A. Spruill, I

God called me to pastor in 1983. He placed a burning desire in my heart for His people to know Him better and to see further into the spiritual realm. I wanted them to understand more than the surface of His word. Until then I had been concerned primarily about winning souls to the Lord, but after receiving my call to pastor I became equally interested in teaching the saints through the revelation of His word.

I had been preaching for five years already, having studied under my pastor and taken corrspondence courses at the International Bible Institute and Sweetwater Bible College. When I told him that the Lord had called me to pastor, he encouraged me that if God had called me, He would lead me. Almost immediately, his words started to prove true.

Needing confirmation from the Lord that He had truly called me to pastor at this time, I prayed for Him to give me a name for the church He wanted me to begin. He, in turn, questioned me about how churches were named in the Bible. I replied that they were named after the cities where they were located. Next He asked me the name of my city. I said: Norfolk. He reminded me that He had called me into the ministry as an evangelist. Putting the two names together, He announced that the name would be Norfolk Evangelistic Church.

I leased a business office at a shopping center in Norfolk, and the rental agent let me remove a partition in order to use the facility for preaching. I arranged to have a wooden podium built and inquired about borrowing folding chairs for church services. A pastor friend introduced me to a man who not only could provide chairs, but he also offered to rent me a building at 2811 Granby Street. The first floor was furnished with theater seats, a pulpit, and a piano--all for $300 per month. The caretaker who was managing the property intended to buy it from the owner. Unfortunately, he died before he could purchase the building, but not until I had led him to salvation. God gave me great favor with the owner of the building. She agreed to sell it to me and to finance it for the same amount as my rent. She consented to lease me the building with a two-year option to buy and applied my rent to the principal. She has continued to deal graciously with me over the years, and the Lord has blessed her because of it.

On Sunday, October 16, 1983, Norfolk Evangelistic Church held its first praise and worship service at the storefront sanctuary in Park Place. We conducted weekly Sunday school classes and morning services, Wednesday evening Bible studies, and Friday night services with our congregation of about 35 people. Since our early days, we have taught the uncompromised gospel message of Jesus Christ to thousands of people.

"Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season;
reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine."

2 Timothy 4:2
