THE FAMILY OF
JACOB ORCUTT
        1774/5-184?

"THE LEGEND"
URQUHART-
A surname derived from the lands of  Urquhart on Loch Ness. William Urquhart was a Sheriff of Cromarty and married a daughter of the Earl of Ross in the 14th centuary. Craigston Castle, 10 miles south-east of Banff was the seat of the Urquhart family from 1604 to the present day. Their ancestral fortress was at Craig Castle, Udale Bay on the Cromarty Firth. The family fled to England  and eventually their descendant, William Urquhart immigrated to America and his name was changed to Orcutt .

" THE FACTS"

No record exists tying William Orcutt to the Urquhart surname. In fact, in an address delivered before the "Orcutt Family Association" at the Reunion held
in South Weymouth, Mass., Sept . 17, 1904, the President of the Association, Frank A. Bates said "Of our mutual progenitor, William (1) Orcutt, the early part of his life is yet a mystery (Boston Evening Transcript, Sept. 19, 1904)".
These words are basically echoed in the works of Helen G. Judson and Elbert E . Orcutt, in the "Genealogy of John (2) Orcutt and His Descendant's". They cite the fact that "The first authentic record to date (1965), of William Orcutt, father of the Orcutt families in America, is found in his marriage at Hingham, Massachusetts, January 24, 1663, (old style date) to Mary Lane, daughter of Andrew and Tryphena Lane of Hingham, Massachusetts and grandaughter of William Lane of Dorchester, Massachusetts".
Duing the 1930/40's, Fred W. Ingalsbee (Grand nephew of Joshua Orcutt of Genesee Co., NY, early1800's), and then Secretary/Historian of the "National Orcutt Family History Association" wrote a series of letters in which he details the Urquhart/Orcutt
connection for William (1) . Despite his good intentions, Mr. Ingalsbee does not provide evidence supporting his beliefs.
More recently, extensive research by Joel Thomas Orcutt comes to much the same conclusion as Mr. Bates and Mrs. Judson. However, his research concludes that William (1) was in fact the son of William Awcotte, having been born Abt. October 29,
1639 in Mancetter, Warwickshire, England. For far more detail than I can provide here, I highly recommend his book "Our Orcutt Family". Joel can be reached at:

A NOTE OF THANKS
There have been many people involved in helping pull together the different branches of the family. Most notably, the early research on Cyrus and his family was done by Mrs. Anna Waite of Cassadaga, N.Y.. Her detailed records set the stage for what we know today about the descendants of Cyrus. For that we are deeply indebted.
The recent identification of JACOB as the father of CYRUS was assisted by Julie Jones a descendant of DAVID, the brother of CYRUS.  Major contributions by Dale Runge of L.A., Calif on the family of Erastus; James Orcutt of Erie, Pa., the family of James H. Orcutt; Michael Orcutt of Montana on the family of Ezra and Beverly Calgaard of Iowa on the family of Jacob are greatly appreciated. Numerous relatives both close and distant have willingly aided us in our efforts to connect the families. Lastly, thanks to the rest of the Orcutt Community and to the many lookup volunteers for their support and assistance.

ALSO RESEARCHING:
                                                                                               WARNING

Part of our Family History, was recently plagiarized and posted on a GEDCOM at Ancestry.com. This act of piracy was bad enough, but in the process of posting work from this site and that of our companion site hosted by Julie Jones, the facts were corrupted and wrong information was added. After being exposed, the offender has finally removed the corrupt GEDCOM. All of this could have been avoided if he had simply contacted us from the beginning. We don't claim personnal ownership  of the Family History and freely share with the descendants of Jacob. Plagiarism of genealogy information, including on the Orcutt families, is all too common. Perhaps this message will bring the issue forward and increase awareness of this ever growing problem. We all work too hard to have our information posted by someone who did not do the research.
