Erik Peterson received his B.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago with concentration in the areas of photography and creative writing in 1999. In 1994, he interrupted his studies at The School with a five year hiatus in New York City, during which the focus of his work shifted from photography to book-making and mixed-media, two-dimensional work. Also becoming deeply entrenched in the world of New York night life.
In his work, Erik combines the media of drawing, painting, photography and collage. His collages are composed of "found materials", appropriated and original images. They are constructed through the utilization of mundane objects such as electrical tape, contact paper, newspaper and magazine clippings mixed with materials traditionally associated with art-making such as hand-made Oriental papers containing silk and linen fibers, often ornamented with gold leaf. He exercises a sense of humor fringing on the absurd as he approaches the creation of fine art through non-fine art materials. He irreverently juxtaposes images taken from both high and low art sources. These elements make strong references to Dadaism.
In 2007, Erik began covering the surfaces of cardboard boxes with photomontage, collage, ink-drawing transforming disposable, utilitarian objects into precious, potentially utilitarian sculpture. Thematically, he draws from popstar celebrity, subterranean and drag celebrity of the niteclubs of London and New York.
Erik will be showing new work in the Salon of Mother Flawless Sabrina on Friday 24 Oktober 2008.
