HELLO AND WELCOME TO OUR WEBSITE
This website was last updated on 13/01/05
This web Site has been set up with the intent to allow people to portray Irish warriors from different periods in History. There are guides and references to these warriors that fought in Ireland and abroad primarily dealing with the coming of the Vikings and the Medieval Period on the following pages

Please feel free to browse through the pages at your leisure. Here you will find information not just for members of Na Degad but also for visitors with an interest in Irish History and/or Irish Reenactment
WHO WE ARE
Na Degad are a newly formed group based in Glanmire, Co. Cork. We strive to portray the ‘Sparrs’ of the Galloglaich (Galloglass) and Cethernaigh(Kern) of the 14th and 15th Centuries. Na Degad are primarily reenactors who travel to ‘Battles’ and events through-out Ireland and abroad.
Please note that this is a new site and thus not all the lnks are activated yet.

BATTLE REENACTMENT
& LIVING HISTORY
Na Degad was an idea that was floating around in my head for about a year now. There has been a surge of interest in re-enactment in Ireland over the past few years and many groups after the initial chaos of setting up began to produce high quality gear, Living history displays and accurate accounts of who was who in Irish History. One thing that has tended to suffer though was the quality/numbers of the combat. Living History takes up a lot of time and though it does produce excellent results and warrants acclaim from the pickiest historian the average person attending a gig in the crowd does not know or appreciate the time and effort put into this, similarly a battle fought in the middle of a field will only happen for a short space of time and without any build-up or atmosphere leaves the audience confused as to what is going on.

Na Degad was founded in 2003 as a result of a long standing intention to form a group of re-enactors that would be able to show the different fighting techniques, styles and traditions of warriors of times past while leaving Living History groups free to pursue their owns ends and means. This can only have a positive effect on both areas and as such Na Degad was founded. For most of us Na Degad is about exploring the martial values of Ireland’s turbulent and exciting past and we actively train with the aim of trying to understand the trials and difficulties of everyday life of Ireland’s warriors. We do not incorporate large Living History displays (except for the warriors in our group) but having enough to complement other groups who do produce large displays within the same period. We would strive to explain the things warriors and/or mercenaries did in military encampment between battles, within their settlements or en route to neighbouring settlements.
