Algebra/Geometry Real Time Data and Collaborative Projects

Tour the ASM Sky : students will plot data either by hand or calculator to explore stars in the sky. Topics include graphing coordinates, analyzing tables and graphs, connecting to linear graphing.	Down the Drain : calculate average water usage of your class and compare with other classes from around the world. Topics include data collection, data evaluation and interpretation, spreadsheets.	The Gulf Stream Voyage : a multidisciplinary project that explores the historical and mathematical aspects of the Gulf Stream. Topics include navigational vectors with or without trigonometry.

The Noon Day Project : students will recreate the measurement of the circumference of the earth. Topics include geometry, ratios, scale drawings, optional trigonometry connections.	Population Explosion : a series of activities that explores the environmental and mathematical aspects of population growth. Topics include slope as a rate of change, graphing linear functions, graphing exponential functions.	International Boiling Point Project : a collaborative project that asks students to hypothesize, test, and prove the factors that affect the boiling point of water. A great project that can be done in conjunction with your students' science courses. Topics include data collection, graphing, use of Excel, lines of best fit, prediction. 	The Stowaway Adventure : an interdisciplinary project that allows students to track the location of actual cruise ships using real time data. Topics include data collection, latitude, longitude, calculating speed, distance.
