Do you know someone who is ill?

O son of Adam, I fell ill and you visited Me not. He will say: O Lord, and how should I visit You when You are the Lord of the worlds? He will say: Did you not know that My servant So-and-so had fallen ill and you visited him not? Did you not know that had you visited him you would have found Me with him?
hadith Qudsi, 18

Allah (subhanahu wa Ta'ala) has given us endlessly favours and blessings that we can't even count. Thanks to them we live happily; without them we would have perished instantly. And even if we spend all our lives for praising Allah just for one single blessing, we wouldn't be able to thank Allah enough.

So with this in mind, remember those in times of hardship, those who are suffering, those who are ill, and try and do as much as you can to aid them and ease their trials insha'Allah.

Below are a list of possible ways in which you could help those who are ill and in need of others:

Make du'a for them
There are a number of beautiful Prophetic du'as that can be recited for the ill. Also remember that the du'as of the ill is recorded in hadith to be like that of the angels. Ask them to remember you too in your du'as.

Housework
If someone has many children, the housework is never done! See if you can stop by and help with their housework, or anything else that they need help with.

Dinner
Not everyone can be up for cooking or making meals, or feeding their children. Call someone you know who isnt feeling well, and let them know that you are going to make dinner or lunch and drop it off on your way out somewhere! If they are able to walk, then offer invite them over for dinner. Otherwise, stop by during the day, and give some help with their children if they have any.

Qur'an:
Go to their house each day and read them an extract from the Qur'an. As well and bringing peace and rest to their hearts, it will remind them of Allah, and give them the opportunity to listen to the Qur'an if they are unable to read it themselves.

Shopping
Ask if there is anything that you can pick up from the shops and drop off to their house. Lots of people need something from the shops but don't have the time or strength to go and get it when they are sick. Talk to them a little and you should be able to find out what they need, then tell them you are going to go get it and drop it off.

Children
You can help them by letting them know you will pick up their children from school so they can rest longer. Or take the kids to your house so they can rest longer even more. Offer to take care of their children for a day. Offer to pop by during the day and see if you can do anything by way of helping look after their children for a while.

Doctor visits
Perhaps they have a doctors appointment but they don't have a car or they need to make a doctors appointment but don't because they don't have the means to reach one. Encourage them to let you know and that you would love to help.
In Islam, we are encouraged to make use of medical treatments as well as du'as and the Prophetic Sunnah.

Offer Yourself
Let them know that you are there, and are thinking of them. Let them know that you are there, and willing to help in whatever your capacity allows insha'Allah. Remind them of the great blessings from remaining patient, and the ahadith of the wiping away of sins of the sick. Encourage them to be positive and hopeful for a speedy recovery.

Card and gifts
Send them a Get Well card! You can do this via the Mail or Internet! Just let them know you are thinking about them. As well as being a beautiful surprise, it will insha'Allah lift the spirits of the person who is ill, and bring them closer to recovery.

Flowers
Send them flowers! Everyone loves flowers. With a note to say you are thinking about them, and in your du'as. Flowers bring light and freshness to a room, as well and lighten up a person's spirits alhamdulilah. Flowers remind us of the beauty of Allah's Creation, bringing awe and remembrance of Allah al-Shifa - The Healer.
