Parents, Students, Teachers & Guests!
A Letter for the Parents of My Students
Welcome to the wonderful world of Kindergarten!  I am so excited to be your child's teacher!  We are looking forward to a great year at Southside Primary.   I hope that we can work together to make your child's school experiences happy and successful.

In Kindergarten  we will be as busy as bees (visit
Byerly's Busy Bees to see what we're doing).   Each day will be a new and exciting adventure.

Being involved in your child's education is the key to a successful year.  One way to do this is to check your child's backpack or tote bag each day for important papers.

PIE (Parents Involved in Education)  membership and volunteering in the classroom are other ways to be involved with your child's education.  I can always use an extra pair of hands.  From time to time, I may have things that need to be cut out or stapled.  Some of these things can be done at home.  Please let me know if you are able to help in this way   Anytime you are visiting our classroom, please remember to stop by the office for a visitor's tag.

Your child's attendance in school is very important.  If doctor or dentist appointments must be made during the day, we would appreciate you making them for the afternoon.  When your child is absent, we will need a written excuse brought to school the next day.

In order to help your child have a better day, please see that he/she eats breakfast every morning and gets plenty of rest each night.  If children are hungry or tired, they do not learn as well.  Also, sometimes the temperature in our classroom may seem to be a little cool.  If this is the case with your child, you may consider sending a light jacket or sweater that will easily hang over the back of his/her chair.

It is always helpful if you will remember our class procedures.  If you need to pick your child up early, or if he/she is tardy, they must be cleared through the principal's office before coming to the classroom.  If for any reason your child is not to ride his/her regular bus, please notify us that morning by a written note.  Also, if anyone other than you is to pick the child up, please send a note.  We will not release your child to anyone except you without written permission.  In cases of emergency, please phone the school office.

If your child is buying a school lunch (visit
The Lunch Line for weekly menus),  please send the money in an envelope with your child's name, teacher's name, and how many days you are paying for.   You may choose to pay by the week or by the month.

I hope that the above information has been helpful to you.  If you should need additional information or have other questions concerning kindergarten or my classroom, please e-mail me at the link below.

Meet the Teacher!
My name is Valerie Byerly.  I am one of sixteen kindergarten teachers at my school.  I have had experience in Pre-K, Kindergarten, first and second grades and have enjoyed every year at each of the different levels but I especially like teaching Kindergarten.

I have lived in Texas all of my life.  In the past eight or nine years, I have been able to do some traveling.  My favorite place to go  is Alaska.   I have enjoyed visiting with my sister and her family in Ketchikan but they have now moved back to Texas.  Some day soon I hope to take a cruise and visit Alaska again.   My favorite color is pink and my favorite season is a toss up between Spring and Fall.  My favorite holiday is probably Easter.  Going on picnics is a favorite outdoor activity.  I also enjoy collecting bunny rabbits (not real ones).   My favorite collectible is a miniature tea set with bunnies.  In the winter time, I love to drink hot tea.

I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember.  I cannot think of anything else I would rather be doing.  I received my Bachelor's Degree from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, with a teaching certificate in Elementary Education/Kindergarten and Special Education.  After I began my career in teaching I received a Master's Degree in Education from Stephen F. Austin State University in East Texas.  It really excites me to see children learn.  Teaching is the most rewarding job I know.  When a child gives you a handmade card that says, "You are the best teacher I ever had", even if you are their
first, that makes every day worthwhile!
~~  Unity ~~
I dreamed I stood in a studio,
And watched two sculptors there.

The clay they used was a young child's mind,
and they fashioned it with care.

One was a teacher -
the tools she used were books, music and art.

The other, a parent, working with guiding hand,
and a gentle loving heart.

Day after day, the teacher toiled with touch,
that was careful, deft and sure.

While the parent labored by her side,
and polished and smoothed it o'er.

And when at last their task was done,
they were proud of what they had wrought.

For the things they had molded into the child,
could neither be sold nor bought.

And each agreed they would have failed,
if each had worked alone.

For behind the parent stood the school,
and behind the teacher, the home.
