As nations become more interdependent, the need for effective communication and sensitivity to other cultures becomes important.  Today’s youth must be culturally and linguistically prepared to participate in a global society.  I believe that all students can benefit from foreign language instruction.  Even though not everyone learns at the same rate or in the same way, nevertheless, I believe that all students should have the opportunity to acquire language proficiency to a degree equal with their individual ability.

Behavioral requirements:

1. Come to class on time and be prepared.

2. Respect all people and property.

3. Stay in your seats until excused by the teacher.

4. No food or drink in classroom.

5. Raise your hand for recognition, listen to others without interrupting. If your conduct is disruptive, it is unacceptable.

6. Everyone is expected to participate in class. This includes listening attentively when others speak and responding appropriately to taped exercises and question and answer practices and drills. Grades will be determined by test scores, quiz scores, homework, and class participation

7. Because it is very difficult to learn proper pronunciation, gum or candy is not allowed.

8. You may not work on homework for other classes during the class period.  This will result in a 0 for the day.

9. Textbooks and writing supplies should be brought to class every day.

10. All rules outlined in the student conduct handbook will be observed and obeyed.

French 1 is a course that offers an integrated approach to learning French.  In this course, the presentation and practice of functional expressions, vocabulary, and grammar structures will be interwoven with cultural information, language learning tips, and realia to facilitate learning.  French 1 focuses on basic communication with learned phrases, simple question and answers, present tense, and an introduction to past narration.
