This is a basic review of the different number sets. All of these were covered in Algebra I but you should know what kinds of numbers are in each set. In addition to these, we will learn one other type of number later in the year called imaginary numbers.

The opposite of a number is not always a negative. It simply means change the sign of the number to get the correct value.

Absolute value is the distance a number is from zero on a number line. It is always a positive number, regardless of the original number's sign.


examples: -(5) means the opposite of 5 and has a value of -5 -(-3) is the opposite of negative 3 and has a value of 3.

|5|= 5 and |-5|= 5 as well since both are a distance of 5 from zero. The direction does not matter !
