AN ADJECTIVE is used to describe a noun or a pronoun. ADJECTIVES answer the questions   What kind? Which one? How many? or How much?  about the noun or pronoun they modify.

 

ADJECTIVE QUESTIONS

 

                        What kind?                 white fence                  unhappy child

                        Which one?                 this photo                    each one

                        How many?                 two snacks                   many others

                        How much?                 enough time                more pizza

 

 

AN ADVERB is used to modify a verb, an adjective or another adverb. AN ADVERB will answer one of four questions about the word it modifies: Where? When? In what manner? or How?

 

 

                                                            ADVERB QUESTIONS

 

                        Where?                        jogged here                 signaled left

                        When?                         arrived tonight             will speak soon

                        In what manner?         smiled happily             willingly gave

                        How?                          Walked slowly             spoke softly

EXERCISE 1: Recognizing adjectives. In the sentences below underline each adjective, and circle the noun or pronoun it modifies.

                                    On the line provided, write the questions the adjective answers.

 


EXAMPLE: A hungry lion stalked the frightened animals.  Which lion?       Which animals?

EXERCISE 2: Recognizing adverbs modifying verbs.  Underline the adverb in each sentence. Circle the verb the adverb modifies.

                                    In the space provided, indicate which question the adverb answers: where? when? In what manner?

                                    or to what extent?

EXERCISE 3: Recognizing adverbs modifying adjectives or other adverbs. Underline the adverb in each sentence.

                                    Then circle the adjective or adverb it modifies. On the line provided, write ADJ if the adverb

                                    is modifying an adjective; write ADV if the adverb is modifying an adverb.
