Exercise 1-As Modifiers. Underline each adjective below and then draw an arrow to the noun or pronoun the adjective modifies.

 

1. Ducks, geese, and swans are aquatic birds.

2. All waterfowl swim and float.

3. These birds have webbed feet.

4. Ducks are smaller than other waterfowl.

5. A female duck has dull feathers that blend in with her surroundings.

 

Exercise 2—Articles  Fill in the space with the correct article.

 

1. ______________ (Indefinite) lake is (indefinite) ideal place for swans to live.

2. ________(Definite) water must not be too deep.

3. ________ (Indefinite) lake with gentle sloping sides is ________(definite) best.

 

Exercise 3 Using nouns as adjectives. Underline the nouns used as adjectives and then circle the   word it modifies.

 

1. As with other members of the waterfowl family, geese gather in large flocks each autumn.

2. They travel long distances to spend the winter season in warm climates.

3. This pattern also provides an uplift that helps each flock member more easily overcome any       air resistance.

4. Wildlife experts have set up refuges in these areas for waterfowl protection.

 

Exercise 4—Proper Adjectives Underline the proper adjectives below and then circle the word it modifies.

1. Snow geese live in the Arctic region surrounding the North Pole.

2. The Canada geese is another popular North American bird.

3. Some geese gather in winter at California refuges.

 

Exercise 5—Compound Adjectives Underline the compound adjectives below and then circle the word the adjective modifies.

 

1. The black-necked swan of South America has a snow-white body.

2. The trumpeter swan has a wedge-shaped head and a unique trumpet-like call.

3. During the fall, ducks migrate from northern lakes and ponds to saltwater marshes and other    coastline refuges.

 

Exercise 6—Possessive Nouns & Pronouns as Adjectives  Below the exercise make 3 columns. Label the first one possessive adjective, the second one non modified and the third one antecedent. Fill in the columns for the sentences below.

 

1. Europeans first spotted hummingbirds during their explorations of the New World.

 

2. In his diary, Columbus wrote accounts of hummingbirds.

 

3. At first, he thought the hummingbird was an insect because of its size.

Exercise 7-Demonstrative Adjectives-Underline the demonstrative adjective below. If it is used   as a pronoun, place a P over it; if it  acts as an adjective, draw an arrow to the word it   modifies.

 

1. Those are yellow-legged gulls gathered on the beach, searching for food.

 

2. These gulls have dark-yellow legs and a distinctive red spot on their lower jaw.

 

3. That one is a herring gull.

 

4. These two types of sea gulls are very similar and are often mistaken for each other.

 

5. This is how you can tell the difference between the two kinds of gulls.

 

Exercise 8—Interrogative Adjectives  Underline the interrogative pronoun in each sentence below. If it is used as a pronoun, place a P above it. If it is used as an adjective, draw an arrow to the word it modifies.
