There are EIGHT parts of speech.

 

1. A NOUN is a word that NAMES a person, place, thing or idea.

        A noun will answer the question Who? or What?

           

            2 types: A. PROPER NOUN names a SPECIFIC person, place, thing or idea

                          B. A COMMON NOUN names a general person, place, thing or idea.

                                    a desk              a room             a school              a dog

 

2. A PRONOUN is a word that takes the place of a noun.

 

            4 types: A. A PERSONAL PRONOUN takes the place of a person.

                           B. A DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUN POINTS SOMETHING OUT.

                                    This, That, These and Those

 

                           C. AN INTERROGATIVE PRONOUN asks a question.

                                    Who? Which? What? Where? When? Why?

 

                           D. AN INDEFINITE PRONOUN names an indefinite or unclear group.

                                    Everybody, everyone, everything, someone, something, someone

                                    No one, nothing, nobody, anyone, anything, anybody, both, each

 

3. AN ADJECTIVE is a word that describes or modifies a noun or a pronoun.

            An adjective will answer the questions What kind? Which one? How many?

 

   EXAMPLE: The beautiful, young girl saw a dog.  Which girl? The beautiful and young one

 

4. A VERB is a word that shows action (either visible or mental) or state of being.

 

5. AN ADVERB is a word that modifies a verb, adjective or other adverb.

            An adverb will answer Why? When? How? or Where? in relation to the word it modifies

 

   EXAMPLE: The dog walked slowly down the street. How did the dog walk? slowly

 

6. AN INTERJECTION is a word that shows emotion.

  

    EXAMPLE:  Hey! What are you doing?

 

7. A PREPOSTION is a word that relates its object (which will always be a noun or a pronoun)    to another word in the sentence.

 

   EXAMPLE: Sally went into the store.   INTO is the preposition; STORE is its object; INTO is relating its object STORE to the verb WENT. Where    did Sally go? She went into the store.  SEE TEXTBOOK FOR A LISTING OF ALL PREPPOSITIONS.

 

8. A CONJUNCTION is a word that joins two words.

  

            EXAMPLE: Suzi AND Joe played tag in the backyard.
