Tracking students' work at Centres is very important and perhaps the greatest struggle a teacher can have when using centres. I have come up with an easy tracking system that works. It requires minimal preparation and maintenance, yet tracks students work and also serves as a record of who has and has not completed their work on time.

Once activites are assigned for the specific centres, a tracking sheet is placed at the centre. The tracking sheet is a class list on which students place a check mark or an intial of a day of the week beside their name when they have completed the centre. The name of the subject and centre are at the top of the tracking sheet and the sheets are glued onto construction paper which is colour coded by subject (yellow for writing; black for math; blue for reading; green for science; yellow for art; purple for social studies; orange for drama; pink for listening). This allows me to see at a glance who has and has not completed each centre. Once the week or time period given to finish the centre is over, I highlight (with a yellow marker) the names of students who did not complete the centre. I also have a space next to each child's name in which I can record specific comments about their work. Students are given an opportunity to finish the centre the following week and I write a note in their Communication Book to parents to inform them that their child has incomplete work and must work at a faster pace in order to keep up with the work I assign. I am also able to use the tracking sheets for reference during parent/teacher interviews.

Students also have their own individual tracking sheets on which they record the activites they do each day. When a sheet is full, I glue it into their Communication Book for parents to look at and sign. It serves as a springboard for parents and children to discuss what the children have been doing at school.
