Description (Very biased info re my opinions, no offense intended.)
Roots & Influences
1940 - 1955
Uptempo rhythm and blues, doo wop, and popular movers, including Fats Domino, LaVern Baker, Bill Haley & his Comets, and a variety of country-influenced R&B leaders.
The Golden Age
1955 - 1959
The first big rock'n'roll hits, street corner group harmony, and rock-a-billy, including Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Elvis, Dion & the Belmonts, and many one hit wonders.
Struggling Years
1959 - 1963
A few more rocking songs, as tragedies slow things down to sentimental ballads.  But rock reels back with the Twist, early Motown, neo doo wop, surf pop, and the girl groups.
British Invasion
1964 - 1967
The Beatles, Rolling Stones, DC5, etc. were only approached by Motown, other early soul artists, and the California sound including the Beach Boys and Rightous Brothers.
Psychodellic Period
1967 - 1970
Underground FM takes rock to a higher place with Sgt. Pepper, Hendrix, and extended versions of pop singles while garage bands extrapolate from rock basics.
Album Oriented Rock
1971 - 1975
LPs now rule as FM dishes out heavy metal, country rock, and art rock including Led Zeppelin, the Stones, Eagles, Foghat, and Pink Floyd as popsy AM becomes useless.
The Disco Days
1976 - 1979
Disco crashes of its own obesity, good rockin' tunes are not in the Top 40 as the real rock genre takes on a cult status with ELO, REO, UFO, BTO, Foreigner, and Bob Seger.
New Wave
1979 - 1985
Punk, power pop, and hard rockers including AC/DC, Cheap Trick, and Joan Jett & the Black Hearts revive the aging genre, though nowhere near to the level of its haydays.
Alternative Rock
1985 - 199?
Starting out as rootsie hard rock with the Blasters, Jason & the Scorchers, and the Jesus & Mary Chain, it evolved into the mainstream mush it was supposed to be an alternative to!
Internet Music
199? - 2003
Wow!  Now *anything* goes and it's all "free" but you have to buy a computer, learn software, MP3s, solve glitches, and hunt around an awful lot to find good rockin' tunes.
