The 40 miles of protected lakeshore at Pictured Rock National Park is rich with sandstone cliffs sculpted by the winds and waves of Lake Superior.

Sandstone cliffs, streaked with mineral stain, loom over the waters of Lake Superior at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. 

The Grand Sable Dunes in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore sweep 300 feet down to turquoise waters.  Along the hiking trail, exhibits discuss dune plants and their role in the dune environment.

In addition to its educational exhibits, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point features an operating lighthouse and a sandy beach edged with colorful lake-polished stones.

In the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, the recovered bell from the ill-fated Edmund Fitzgerald stands as a memorial to the 29 men who lost their lives when the mighty ore ship went down in 1975 in a November gale 17 miles off of Whitefish Point.

The Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie feature a viewing platform where spectators can watch ships as long as 1,000 feet make the 21-foot change between Lake Superior and Lake Huron.
