The following syllabus shows what is expected of each student in order for them to be awarded a particular kyu or dan grade. Each section provides guidelines on what techniques are appropriate to learn, and consist of a variety of techniques at each level.

Please note that the quantity of knowledge is of far less importance than the quality of the knowledge and the ability to perform it. The syllabus should not be used to tick off the next series of techniques in the list, as part of a collection of tricks. Instead it should provide the student with a framework to aid their understanding, and their memory, and it should help them to put all the techniques in context.

Nor is the grading panel bound by the content of the syllabus, although they will take it into consideration in arriving at an appropriate award for a student, and should be open to discussion with the club instructor with regard to the level of knowledge of a particular student or club.
