"The last Thing She Wanted"

by Marilyn Oliver

Betty Sue was a thirty year old mother of three and she found out today that she was going to have another baby. The last thing that she wanted was to end up pregnant again. What was she going to do now. Her husband had just had himself fixed so she wouldn't and now this. He just wasn't fast enough. He was going to be mad. He had made it plain last week no more kids. Should she tell him? Yes she would tell him. But it would have to wait until the kids were in bed so they couldn't hear the fight she knew was going to happen. This is the last thing she wanted to happen.

She sat and watched the clock all evening and now it's time for her husband. He was to walk into that door tired, and whipped from working all day at the plant and now she had to tell him that there was another mouth to feed in six short months. So she sat and waited and worried of what was going to be.

At 5:30pm on the dot he walked in the door and sure enough he was tired but there was a glow in his eyes. Where the glow came from she didn't have to wait long to know. His boss had just gave him a raise. Now there was going to be more money to buy all the things they wanted but couldn't before because of the kids. e said to her, honey I'm so glad that there wont be any more kids, now the kids we do have can have more than before.

She couldn't stand it any more, She burst into tears and sobbed in her husbands arms. Sweet heart, she said, there is something I have to tell you, I'm going to have another baby. We didn't see the doctor soon enough, we waited to long. I'm so sorry. She was crying so hard she almost couldn't get the words out.

Her husband slowing pushed her back so he could look her in the eyes and all he said was, Darling the Lord gave us a raise so we could raise another child, if we couldn't do it God would never have made this happen. So don't worry Betty Sue, Jesus will take care of us. We'll just have to wait for the next pay raise. So don't worry, we'll get by just like we always have.
