REMINISCE

This time of year I like to go back
To family and friends on Christmas day
So many memories of being together
Surrounded by the ones I hold dear
Crowding on the stairs, plates in hand
Trying to eat while staying out of the way
Aunts and uncles, cousins and kids
Enjoying the time spent visiting here
Often repeated, this Christmas tradition
Children and grandchildren, great-grandkids, too
A single day in the old house
Visiting in the kitchen, playing in the snow
Dressing up with Grandma's jewelry
Hearing so many say "I love you"
Hot cocoa or tea, warming us inside
As the winter wind continues to blow
But this year is different, there's been a change
The old house is no longer the same
Grandma and Grandpa have both gone
Someone else lives there now
This Christmas, we're missing them
Without them, it's just not the same
A void has been left, a hole in our hearts
But I know we'll manage somehow
The miles may separate us
Our lives keep us apart
But love is the anchor we cling to
We know the way back home
This year we may not be together
But if I close my eyes and listen with my heart
I know we're together in spirit
Wherever our feet may roam
