Mona Graduate Conference
Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
This FAQ is designed especially for
first-time visitors to Jamaica and first time visitors/presenters to a
conference.
Q. How do I send my abstract?
A. Abstracts are sent by email:
monascholars@gmail.com
and should be no more than 300 words. We will consider late abstracts up to
April.
Q. How will I know if my paper will be
accepted?
A. We have a review committee that will
determine how relevant your paper is and would guide you; and which will place
you on a panel. We will notify you by the end of April or before.
Q. Can I just attend, even if I do not
present a paper?
A. Absolutely. But if you send an abstract,
we assume you wish to present a paper.
Q. If I have already graduated but consider
myself a 'young scholar', can I still present or attend.
A. Yes. We have had this request and since
we want to build a community of young scholars, you would be welcome.
Q. Can I present a paper relevant to the
conference theme but is not part of a thesis?
A. Yes. We are flexible. Although we want
to provide the opportunity for graduates to present their thesis, we also want
to attract work that our young scholars are doing otherwise.
Q. Can I attend with a co-author of a paper
or the supervisor of my thesis?
A. Yes. Collaborators and supervisors are
welcome.
Q. If my study is on Latin America, North
America or Developing Countries, will it still be considered?
A. Yes. But we would ask that you say
something about its relevance to the Caribbean.
Q. When you say 'Caribbean", do you include
the non-English speaking countries?
A. Yes. We anticipate that most papers will
be on the English- speaking sub-region but we would definitely welcome papers
from and about the wider Caribbean.
Q. How much time will I have to present?
A. Each speaker will be given 15-20
minutes. Each will be on a panel of 3-5 persons. There will be time for
questions and comments after the presentations.
Q. How long must my paper be?
A. The length of the paper is less relevant
for the presentation. However, since we hope to produce a conference
publication, the length will be relevant for that. For publication purposes, the
paper should be about 20-25 pages (double-spaced) and should be sufficiently
complete by the time of the conference. Time will be given after the conference
for refinements and then it will be considered for publication. Publication
information will be provided later.
Q. Where will the conference be held?
A. The conference will be held on the
campus of the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. The campus has
facilities for accommodation, meals, recreation, and security. It is 20-30
minutes drive from the airport in Kingston and is less than 10 minutes from
a major shopping area.
Q. When do I register?
A. You register when you arrive for the
first session. There will be a small conference fee of US$15 or the Jamaican
dollar equivalent.
Q. What other costs will I have to bear?
A. You will be responsible for your
travelling cost? Please see the following links to get an idea of the cost of
airfare to Jamaica

and/or
www.spiritairline.com.
With regard to accommodation we are making arrangements for all conference attendees to be housed on the University of the West Indies Mona Campus, the cost is as follows;
-Caribbean attendees: U$25.00
-Others: U$28.00
-Double Occupancy: U$40.00
We have made arrangements for lunch and dinner to be provided at a cost of $5.00US per meal. The average cost for 3 meals per is an estimated $15.00US. This is the average cost for meals on any restaurant or cafeteria on campus.
Q. I have more questions that are not
answered here. How can I get them answered?
A. Please email us with any questions. We
will respond to you personally and if the question seems pertinent to interested
persons generally, we will post the answer here. So, please keep checking this
FAQ for updates before you send a new question. The answer might already be
here.
