First, let us begin with this (click on this link). Kind of puts it all in perspective: we're dealing with a puppet, with the power, and the intellect behind that power (we are optimistic that there is intelligence, however malignant, in the back room there somewhere) behind the scenes.
Second is the fact of our dwindling oil production, the increased cost of extracting that natural resource, and the location of the remaining supplies in distant -- Middle Eastern! -- countries. We seem to be quietly, mindlessly singing, "Their land is our land ..." as a nation, while shying away from our own complicity in the deaths, the torture of human beings, and the devastation of the lands that we have under siege.
