Robert Jesse(B.J.) Gilman and Mollie Mahon Gilman.  This picture was given to  Mr. & Mrs. Cornelius P. Gilman for a Christmas present. This was probably taken right after Robert and Mollie were married.
I have two original letters Robert Jesse wrote to Mollie Mahon before they were married. They were married Nov. 17,1897. S.K. Tigrett officiated.  I'm going to transcribe the letters. They are old and faded.

    Dear  Girl
                         Doubtless you
will be surprised at receiving another letter from me. You will think I'm in
some what of a rush and I hope you will follow my example and write, every chance you get. I don't love to write very well, but the pleasure comes in receiving. This leaves us all well as usual and hope this will find you all well and enjoying life.
We have been picking cotton for our livelyhood this week, Eddie and myself. We haven't picked much yet thoe. We have picked about 1000 pounds. The weather has been to warm to pick much. I think I will go to another negro baptizing tomorrow at Yellow Bluff. I promised Birt Colley I would go with him down. I went to Halls the other night, to preaching last one Thursday night.Heard a fine sermon delivered by Bro.Perry. I had  taken Miss Georgia Chambers, What do you say about that? Of course we didn't talk about much, such as weather and dust. We still have plenty of dust down here. Their was a croud going again tonight. They wanted me to go with them, but it was a little to much for me to go tonight again. Well  probably you will be looking for me to go to the association and I write this to let you know that I don't expect I can come up for you. Ma and Pa wants to go to the association and we can't all leave at once. I write this so as you won't make any preperations, but if it rains you need not be surprized to see me. I had rather come some other time but I can't before then. I want to come the first Sunday in Oct. The Saturday before if it is agreeable. I can't come the 4th Sunday in this month, for me and Pa won't get home in time for me to start, if they go they will use my buggy. You write me word if you are coming and you come if you can and if I can slip off over their one day I will come and see you a little while. Well I haven't much news on love to write this time that is if understood. I hope this you received my letter. Well I must close hopeing to hear from you soon and a long sweet letter and hope i will see you the first Sunday, if not sooner. must close this uninteresting  letter, please excuse bad writing and all miss inperfections.
I remain as ever yours with all my love.

Dear One,
I will tonight endevor to write you a few lines to let you hear how I am getting along. This leaves me and all the rest well and hope this will find you all the same. What is the matter with you? The reason you haven't wrote before now I have been looking for a letter from you about a week. Have you become disgusted at my letters and quit. It seems like it has been two months since I heard from you and a year since I seen you. O I do want to see you so bad, but if nothing tearable don't happen i will see you in about 14 days, if it is all right, if not before. It seems like I must see you before then. You must write rail soon and tell me what you think about the 17. I have desided on that day if it suits you and let me know what you think of the arrangements I have made. I will tell you what they are. I have made arrangements to live on this place and build us a shanty. I have got 25 acres of ground to work and it's all good ground. I have been shaving the boards today to cover the house and got 15 or 29 made. How is that for a start/ If you don't like that arrangement, write me and let me know. Pa an me both like the match splendid and are satisfied if you don't want to live hear, don't hesitate to say so, for their can be other arrangements  made. I will tell you more about it when I see you. The rain Sunday and Monday has throwed me back on some of the gathering. I don't think I will get through before the seventeenth, but can finish afterwards. I haven't  been to the Debale any yet and haven't heard from it. Their is lots of marring now. I think very near everybody in this county is going to marry. I haven't heard from my (unreadable) yet and I will give that (unreadable). I don't care. Some says she don't know weather she can stand to come or not. Mr. Rike says he will come. Mr. Egbert Rucker's wife died last Saturday eve. Well as I haven't any more news of importantance to write will close hoping to hear from you soon. I'll see you with much love to all but the largest portion to your dear sweet self. As ever yours
Bob
