Synchronized Swimming: Final Results

TOP PERFORMERS: The U.S. squad also features Jill Savery, Jill Sudduth, and Heather Simmons-Carrasco, who finished 2-3-4 respectively in the Olympic Trials, and are all considered top performers in the world of synchronized swimming.

SANTA CLARA DOMINATES NATIONALS: The Santa Clara Aquamaids dominated the competition at the1996 National Championships, held at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis. The club claimed all three medals in individual competition, the gold and silver in duet and the team title. All this without its top four performers, including Becky Dyroen-Lancer. All are on the 1996 Olympic Team. The charge was led by Anna Kozlova, a 1992 Olympian for Russia, who earned gold in all three events.

MAYS MAKES NATIONALS HISTORY: Bill Mays will make history simply by competing at the Jantzen National Synchronized Swimming Championships in Indianapolis April 24-28. He will become the first male in history to compete in the event. The 17-year-old from Syracuse, N.Y., moved to southern California recently and trains with the Santa Clara Aquamaids. Last month, he claimed silver medals in solo and duet at the junior nationals in Irving, Texas, and was part of the champion squad in the team event. That made him the first male to win a national junior title. While the next step in his progression, a berth on the senior national team, is possible, the culmination of his career, the Olympic Team, is in question. Synchronized swimming is chartered as an all-female sport at the Olympic level.

TIGHT VEIL OF SECRECY: The U.S. Olympic Team held several training camps in Seattle, Wash., in January and in San Diego in February, and in Atlanta in March and May. While in Seattle, the team kept all practices closed except for a half-hour window for media opportunities on the last day of the camp. The team is working on its routine for Atlanta under a tight veil of secrecy, so tight that the team's press officer doesn't even know what the music selection is. USA Today Syncro Page

SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING (6/17/96)
Despite the pre-Games secrecy about routines, information is beginning to dribble out. Japan -- which re-enacted the Kobe earthquake at last summer's World Cup in Atlanta -- reportedly will use "The Four Seasons" as its theme. Reports say Italy, coached by U.S.-born Kathleen O'Brien Romanni, is taking its cues from American country music. The U.S. team is going less for messages than sensory images and feelings with its "Fantasia on Orchestra" routine. Different portions of the five-minute swim highlight the strings, woodwinds, brass and other sections of an orchestra.

SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING (6/20/96)
Fresh off the nude photo of Nathalie Schneyder and Margo Thien in the current issue of Life magazine, the U.S. team will appear live on "The Tonight Show" Wednesday from an MTV beach house in Malibu, Calif. With host Jay Leno doing a live hookup from the NBC studios in Burbank, Calif., the team will perform its routine in the pool, then pick people off the beach to get in the water with them and take the "synchro challenge." That's the introduction to basic synchronized swimming moves that very nearly conquered gymnast Mary Lou Retton when she filmed a segment with the team at the Olympic trials last fall.
