La Fiesta de Chiapas
"Every year in the city of Chiapa de Corzo, located 5 miles from Tuxtla Gutiérrez,
are celebrated the festivities of the Saint Patron of Chiapa , Sn Sebastian.
These festivities are very popular, in these days the "parachicos" go out in
the street to dance. La Feria (the Fair) lasts for about a week and starts on
January 15th and has its end on January 23rd.
In the first day we usually have the so called "Comida Grande" (the Grand Meal),
this consists in salty mealt cooked with pumpkin seeds, this day the "parachicos"
gather to dance. This is a three years promise made by them to Sn. Sebastian.
The "parachicos" usually exceed 1000 in number every year. There is a "parachico"
captain who guards the flags from the different neighbourhoods
of Chiapa de Corzo and they go dancing all over the city streets until they
reach the Church of Santo Domingo, where the image of Sn. Sebastian is held. These
events are called the "Downing of the Flags". In these days also men are
dressed like women and dance with the women who are dressed with the traditional
"Chiapaneca" dress. This is also a promise made to Sn. Sebastian.
On the 20th, there is a parade with allegoric cars and in the evening of the
21st, there is a representation over the Grijalva river of the "Battle of Chiapa",
this was a battle that took place there hundreds of years a go with the Sapniards and
the native indians, this representation is called "El combate naval" (the navy combat)
los indigeand it is made with fireworks which simulate the explosion. La
Feria ends on January 23rd with a "confeti" combat all over the city. And
you may also enjoy of the traditional candies made in the city, the mechanic
rides.
All these festivities made of Chiapa de Corzo a city dressed in the
mood of party these days..."
