Defending the Faith

"A dog barks when his master is attacked. I would be a coward if I saw that God's truth is attacked and yet would remain silent."
- John Calvin
Apologetics. What is it?
apologia - a formal defence of one's opinions or conduct, a reasoned defence or vindication.
So what is it? At its roots it is defending the Christian faith in the face of those people who object to the validity of what we believe. I have to admit that until recently I was not well educated in apologetics. But it is something that I have taken upon myself to get better at because we are told to, "Always be prepared to give the answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect." (1 Peter 3:15)

Apologetics is the part of Christianity that deals with answering the questions that your friends, family, or critics might have for you. But you cannot easily defend your beliefs, or atleast most people cannot, without taking the time to familiarize yourself with many of the questions that you are most likely to face. It may involve the study of many different subjects such as reading ancient manuscripts, studying philosophy, biology, chemistry, evolution, and mathmatics. Many of you are probably asking, how do I know what I should be studying? Pray about it. Let God lead you. Some people after praying still feel like they do not know what they should be doing. Then I would suggest looking at life circumstances. Look for circumstances in your life where you have been challenged by a non-believer, but did not have an logical answer. For instance, if someone approaches you and asks you how you know that the Bible is th! e Word of God and your only answer is, "Because my mom said so," then you probably have your first area of study. Take the time to find out why Christians know without a doubt that the Bible is the Word of God. Talk to other Christians. Talk to your pastor. There are vast resources out there, use them.

We need to keep in mind though that we cannot save anyone ourselves, it does not matter how intelligent we are or how logically we defend our faith to someone. Only Jesus can save (John 12:32, John 14:6) and the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin (John 16:7-11). We never know what kind of a seed has already been planted in someone. Many times God prepares people before we ever have any contact with them so that our words, along with the Holy Spirit, prompt them to respond (Acts 16:14).
