ASCP: AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CONSULTANT PHARMACISTS
What is a consultant pharmacist?
A consultant pharmacist works within the clinical branch of pharmacy
practice. Their goal is to monitor patient drug therapy to ensure
that the proper drug regimen is maintained and prevent
administration of unnecessary medication, improving the quality of
patient/resident care. Consultant pharmacists work in a wide range of
settings including nursing homes, assisted living facilities,
hospitals, psychiatric facilities, and hospice. The consultant
pharmacist is becoming an increasingly important appendage to the
backbone of healthcare!
Why should you join the ASCP student chapter?
Being part of the ASCP student chapter provides an alternative view of
pharmacy practice that would otherwise not be seen. ASCP offers
participation in wellness clinics and professional meetings that
represent consultant pharmacy practice. The state and local ASCP
chapters treat their student members as if they were active
professional members, which may differ from other oragnization. A
definite reason to join ASCP? Membership is free for students and
once you register, you are a member for the duration of pharmacy
school. Therefore you have nothing to lose, only to gain. Free
membership to a professional organization, acess to wellness clinics
and professional meetings, and a brand new view of pharmacy practice!

With incentive from the success of the business plan of 2005, NCPA intends to enter the competition every year with new ideas for perfecting an independent pharmacy. In addition, we hold clinics in independent pharmacies and host shadow programs for students.

SPAWNY:
The Student Chapter of the Pharmacist Association of Western New York
(SPAWNY) is an organization that focuses on the advancement of the pharmacy profession. It allows students to become involved in extending Pharmacists' scope of practice through political action. The involvement in this organization also provides a great source for networking, allowing students to establish many connections with health care providers/political figures throughout the Western New York area.
Each year students attend "Pharmacy Day" in Albany, NY with members of PAWNY to speak about topics concerning the pharmacy profession. The cost for a membership in this organization is $12. For students interested in joining or for those who would like to attend a PAWNY board meeting, please contact Lynn Schmidt at PAWNY99@aol.com.
