THIRD GENERATION HONDA ACCORD OVERVIEW The Honda Accord was first introduced into North America in 1976. The Honda Corporation first envisioned the Accord for the buyer who valued 'practicality and 'usefulness'. It was often thought of as an enlarged version of its cousin, the Honda Civic. Most people would recognize the Accord as a basic utility vehicle. However, there are some who prefer to take this thinking several steps further, combining performance and styling with value and practicality. From its initial inception to the present time, there have been six generations of Accords. The focus is on the third generation Accords, covering years 1986-1989. North American body styles for these years included two door coupes, two door hatchbacks, and four door sedans. Vehicle grades included the DX sedan, LX sedan, LXi sedan, SEi coupe, SEi sedan, DX coupe, DX hatchback, LXi coupe, and LXi hatchback. In stock form, the Accord runs on a transversely mounted 4 cylinder engine which is water cooled, uses a single overhead camshaft, and has fuel delivered through either carburetor or fuel injection. They are backed by either a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. |
