Summary:
Hector Bridges, a magistrate, is shot dead in his Martyr Warren residence. Barnaby and Troy uncover some nasty secrets when they find out that Hector's wife, Jenny, was once married to Hector's neighbour Will Saxby - and Saxby's current wife was once married to Hector, meaning that Hector's daughter Fleur is in reality Saxby's child! Meanwhile, an old army-comrade of Hector, Orville Trudway, seems to have born a grudge towards him. A group of travellers disturbs the peace further by organizing a horserace on the village green - but then one of them is murdered too...

The murderer of Hector Bridges is Fleur Bridges, Hector's stepdaughter. One the night of the murder, they were having an argument, and at one point Hector threatened to physically abuse Fleur, after which she shot him. The murderer of John Smith (the traveller) is Will Saxby. Orville Trudway had gathered lots of folk to stay on the village green, which didn't please a lot of Martyr Warren's inhabitants, least of all Will Saxby. Eventually he had a fight with one of the travellers - John Smith - and accidentally killed him when he pushed him into a wine cooler. |
